I came here with high expectation as the bakery shop is voted #1 in Denver. The service was great - the staffs here seemed knowledgeable about their products. They have many vegan, sugar-free, dairy-free, saturate fat-free options. I personally don't like very sweet dessert so I followed a staff's recommendation and got myself a strawberry flavor cake. OMG, the cake was so overwhelmingly sweet so I could barely taste anything else. Wait, I also tasted wheat flour which, together, made a very confusing combination. Overall, I didn't think the cake was editable. read more

Bought a cream cheese roll cake wrapped in saran wrap. That should of been a clue that cake was not fresh. took home and tried a piece. Cake tasted stale, cream cheese was melted like icing, had a chemical taste. Awful. Threw in the garbage. read more

This is definitely a hidden gem in the Denver area. The variety of pastries is impressive and I am dying to try a cake from here sometime! However, I didn't love everything I happened to order here. The eclair filling had a chemical-y after taste, the cookies and cream torte lacked flavor... I had a guava streusel that was good but I've had better in Hawaii. I love their variety of vegan and gluten free options, but warning, it's expensive! read more

Smells amazing. Friendly service. A huge array of treats along with proper social distancing practices and mask-wearing. We drove out from northeast Denver; they are in super cute olde town Arvada near the Arvada Costco. The German chocolate cupcake was super moist with lots of coconut whipped frosting, not too sweet. Kid liked the choc frosted cookie, and the streusel was delicious after being warmed up a bit. We would definitely return! ps- I learned today that German chocolate cupcakes aren't actually from Germany the country, but they have them anyway and they are good! read more

Four years later we stopped in and realized how much we missed this place. We stocked up on strudel, biscotti, cookies, and even a cupcake. You all still get five stars. If you like sweet pastries and treats, you have to try this place! While it may look small from the street, the place is packed with a wild assortment of items. My favorite so far is the chocolate covered chocolate-chip cookie sandwich with peppermint creme filling. Sounds amazing, right? Well it is!! Stopped by this evening, always a great selection of sweets, love that they have Gluten free items. Everything looks delicious! Met the most beautiful person behind the counter - Conner, you an amazing person!- he gave us some great suggestions- which he nailed beautifully by the way, It was so refreshing to have such a young person with a positive attitude and helpful. Stopped into this amazing bakery this morning while visiting the area. The instant aroma of fresh baked goods is so pleasant. The bakery has so many options from cakes, cupcakes, cookies, breakfast items etc I tried the berry streusel roll which absolutely delicious. Server was very pleasant and there was no wait. Would give 0 stars if I could. Extremely upset at how my husband and I were treated by this place. I ordered my daughter's birthday cake a week in advance and I told them the theme and colors we wanted. When we picked it up, I was surprised by the way they wrote "Happy birthday" across a flat ribbon on the cake. It looked terrible honestly and the colors were clashing terribly. Not sure who told them a flat ribbon like that looks ok.. I asked my husband to take it back and ask that they write it instead ON the cake in white lettering. The entire staff and manager refused to write directly on the cake and even insinuated that my husband would try and ask for the cake for free if they mess it up. Mind you, the handwriting on the ribbon was perfect so it's not like they couldn't actually do it. They simply didn't want to. Now it's up to me to figure out how to make this cake look presentable before her party starts. 1000% will never order a single thing from here again. read more

Ordered a cake in advance for a birthday celebration. When we picked up the cake 48 hours later it was completely frozen solid and took over 2 hours to thaw. When ordering the cake, they state "can't wait to bake it for you" - there was no indication it would be frozen. Due to timing of the party we had to serve a partially frozen cake. Called and emailed the restaurant for resolution, but haven't heard back. Definitely not worth $60. read more

My mom spent $96.00 for a 1/4 sheet sugar free bday cake for her 70th birthday. It was awful. Completely dry and crumbled when we cut into it. There is no reason for a dry cake. Absolutely no flavor. Yes, we understand sugar free is different and we have had many sugar free desserts that are quite tasty. There is no absolutely no reason for a sugar cake to be dry and tasteless. Sugar is not a softening ingredient. No one ate it. Was a disaster for her monumental birthday. Please do not advertise that you make sugar free cakes if this is the product. OMG, every time I step in this bakery I walk about 5 pounds heavier! This is an absolute sweet tooth dream come true! They have everything you could possibly want or dream of. This is truly an authentic German Bakery. My wife lived in Germany 2 different times, for 10 years total and she can vouch for the authenticity of the strudels that we had. To have a vegan cupcake let alone 3 or 4 different flavours: amazing! Chocolate frosting on a vanilla cupcake, Mimosa cupcake, German chocolate cupcake. The cupcakes are a bit heavy on frosting and I am a frosting lover, just a heads up. The frosting is on top and frequently it has been piped to the center of the cupcake. They also have cookie and small little two bite cakes (unsure of official names for these); they frequently have German chocolate cake and a strawberry flavored one. Many many more flavors of non vegan cupcakes. Lots of gluten free options. A bit pricey, especially when we "stock up". They are always really well staffed and staff are friendly and patient because there are so many choices! read more

After 7+ visits here, I think I can safely say I've given Rheinlander a fair chance to wow me with their baked goods, and it's just never happened. The smell is always enticing so I go in, and then I get home and I'm disappointed with my choice. Sugar cookie with sprinkles- tasted like nothing, not even sweet enough. I actually wanted more sugar in order for the cookies to have some sort of flavor. Bienenstich (whole "cake")- so dry. Tasted like it had been sitting in plastic wrap for days. My husband even microwaved pieces of it and topped it with honey and vanilla ice cream. Not salvageable. I also think it $25. bienenstich bar- better than the whole cake, but still dry and somewhat mealy. Carrot cake cupcake- SO cloyingly sweet and flavorless, except for the taste of refrigerator. Cherry strudel- best of the stuff I've tried, was actually pretty fresh, but seems pretty basic to make. Cherry pie filling + puff pastry= strudel Apple strudel- same as above Various "bars" and slices of cake- all seem to taste the same- sweet refrigerator. I'm giving this place 3-stars because it does seem to be a neighborhood favorite, and I'm glad they're at least trying. Maybe I have just always gotten the one or two things that shouldn't be ordered that day. Who knows. The search continues for a great bakery in the NW Denver metro area. read more

Wow! I'm so upset with myself that I have lived in Colorado for nearly 11 years and have NEVER come to this AMAAAAZING bakery in Old Town Arvada! I got off sugar recently and got their sugar free/gluten free red velvet cake and a chocolate cupcake and to my pleasant surprise you would NEVER KNOW they were actually SF/GF by how DELICIOUS they are! We just keep going back to Rheinlander Bakery!! It's hard to pass it up once the sweet smell hits your nostrils! Their coffee isn't my favorite, but the baked goods are delicious and there's a good variety to try something different each time, though I seem to keep ordering the yummy Persians. One Saturday weeks ago we were lucky enough to snag a savory kolache - it was SO great but unfortunately every time we've been back since, they haven't had them. Our bakery is traditional and innovative, offering you both legendary strudels, kuchens, fancy European torte cakes as well as some of the US's most enticing gluten free, sugar free, dairy free desserts, cakes and pastries. We are located in the beautiful historic setting of Olde Town Arvada, Colorado.

History

Established in 1963.

Rheinlander Bakery is the Denver Metro area’s oldest bakery. The second owners, Ed and Maro Dimmer, were proud to continue and develop the bakery founded by Jakob and Katharina Dimmer in Arvada's downtown in 1963. Jakob and Katharina Dimmer, immigrants from Germany, specialized in wonderful European style breads and cakes. The original bakery operated under the brand name Dimmer's which eventually was spun off as a European bread only bakery supplying the Denver area with great natural ryes, multigrains and sourdoughs. Rheinlander bakery continued its foundation as Arvada's homegrown retail bakery with a mission to bake better choices for our customers. Today We are famous for our cakes and pastries, as well as our wide selection of treats for those with special dietary needs. Loren and Luke Naftz took over for the Dimmers in 2021 and are carrying on the tradition of fine baking!

Meet the Business Owner: Loren and Luke N.

Loren graduated from Johnson and Wales in 2011 ready to jump into a career of baking, and found her way to Rheinlander Bakery! After learning and working with the previous owners (the Dimmers) for nearly a decade she and her husband took over for them so they could retire. Their son, Perrin, can often be seen running around the bakery, and Loren's sister Danielle is their general manager, so the family business feeling is certainly alive and well!

My MIL ordered cupcakes for my babyshower. We sent inspiration pics and had conversations about what was expected and flavors. Day of babyshower, cupcakes were picked up - box taped shut, our own fault for not checking before leaving. Once we arrived at the venue and opened the box we realized they were not at all what was ordered, incorrect flavors, incorrect designs, overcooked and burnt on the edges. We reached out to the bakery to express our dissatisfaction, she then proceeded to post our conversation on Instagram asking if we were a Karen and praising her own cupcakes. In her posts she contradicts herself several times. She states that she received an inspiration pic and that they did the cupcakes as close as they could, but in another comment she said she didn't know what we wanted and we only gave a verbal description of desert flowers. She also states in her text to us (with the screenshot she posted) that she didn't see the cupcakes before we picked them up because they were taped shut and asked us to send a pic, but then also states 'we all thought they were very pretty'. Which one is it? I am attaching the inspiration pics as well as what we received. Cupcakes were all different sizes, icing was very minimal, designs were not even close, edges were burnt and crusty, none of the guests even touched them, we paid $150 and ended up with zero desserts at the shower. Beware of what you see online for this bakery as given this experience, they will delete anything that does not fit their narrative nor do they take any accountability. Owner - if you are reading this, we have left messages and would love to hear back from you. We have all email communication proving the ask for this order, if for some reason you are having trouble finding it.
