I went over to the front desk and told them there was a naked man in the women's locker room just sitting there, watching everyone and he responded that they are legally not allowed to remove him. Please educate me because this doesn't seem right. I told them I usually let my 11 year old daughter go to the bathroom herself and I don't feel like it's safe and yet, YMCA did nothing. I was at the YMCA because my daughter had a game. After her game, I checked the women's locker room (about an hour after I took my son to the bathroom) and the naked man was still there, sitting there and putting lotion on his body. This is not okay. Please be careful everyone, especially those with children.

I highly recommend getting signed up to use the EGym system that tracks your progress on many of the cardio and weight lifting machines on the second floor as it helps gamify the whole experience. The YMCA also uses an app where you can reserve a spot for the classes that are offered which I also recommend doing as many classes are popular and fill up. Changing rooms and bathrooms are kept very clean. Staff are generally helpful and the place welcomes people of all ages. Also with the YMCA membership you can go to other YMCA gym locations in the area which has been a convenient option for me as well. Overall definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a solid gym in the area.

The entire place is falling apart, filthy, and woefully non-ADA Compliant! The equipment is…read moremalfunctioning regularly. The entire "wet area" is constantly malfunctioning. There are heater issues in the pool and jacuzzi so often the members joke that "they must have paid the energy bill" the few times they are functioning adequately. The city has shut down the pool for repairs and health violations many times in my less than a year there. Managers do absolutely nothing but mislead and evade, refuse to return an important email (incidentally it took 6 months to finally get Francisco's email - he refused to speak with me or give me his email on 3 occasions), he has also failed to return a few phone calls and 4 in-person requests to front desk staff asking for his help address the more serious issues during the 7 months I have been a member. The women's locker room is not ADA compliant, and the disabled restroom stall is not labeled as such and used as a leisurely changing room often. The stall is always disgustingly dirty, even on the so called cleaning day. This disabled stall often has no toilet covers or toilet paper - especially on weekends, trash and soiled toilet paper strewn all over the floor, a dangerous loose toilet seat they refuse to fix or tighten, and feces and spitballs on the walls since August 2025. The disabled restroom in the common area is always locked and unusable. I am directed there when I have brought the ongoing issues to their attention. There is no lifeguard in the wet area. A swim school takes up the most common hours for pool usage, members are not allowed during this time. An extreme lack of gym and pool etiquette exists beyond anything I have ever seen as a former swimmer, now water walker, and gym member for 40+ years. There are few rules for the wet area, none of which are followed, which along with the safety issues and broken equipment and loose railings create a dangerous, germ filled, and unhealthy environment. The jacuzzi outtake has brown sludge growing in. The tiles in the jacuzzi and pool are covered in filth and slime from people coming out of the saunas to "cool off" without rinsing their sweat off in the shower first. The floating partition dividing the two lanes is similar, and also has black sludge and mold on it. The shower in the wet area was broken for weeks as well. There is literal mold dripping down the ceiling and walls in there they claimed to take care of last September. They seemingly simply wiped the walls and painted over it, as it is growing back at an alarming rate. The pipes are all rusty and some drip onto people in the pool. The city issued them a citation for repair in late August or early September, they still have not done a few of the required repairs. There are a lot of kind caring people that work there, especially Saldi, a former manager, and Jay, the hardworking maintenance person always fixing the broken things management refuses to replace and keeping things running as best as he can. And, there are some great friendly members that make the place more bearable as well. Yet rather than fix their failing infrastructure and equipment, or address member concerns, they get a fancy new bright lightening system that shows how old and filthy everything is, refuse to uphold ADA laws - especially in regard to the disabled lift and the one unusable disabled shower stall, or fix the heating system in the pool that has been malfunctioning on a regular basis since August 2025. Now there is a sign stating they will be getting massage chairs and other useless for most amenities members would have the displeasure of paying $12 a month more for rather than deal with serious health and ADA violations, and aging malfunctioning equipment and facilities. This is the only gym available to me in my neighborhood, most of the disabled people have left because of these issues. I do not have that luxury.

I've never seen anyone wiping down a machine. When asked about the uncleanliness of the machines, staff at the front desk act like they've never heard before that this is a problem. You've got to be kidding me. My question to management is: With all of these negative reviews essentially commenting on the uncleanliness of the gym, why aren't you doing anything to fix it?

I am SO glad we found Strength Camp SF on Yelp. We started with their free introductory class, and honestly, that first impression sealed the deal. The coaching, the structure, the vibe, everything just felt right. From day one, it was clear this isn't a "do your own thing and hope for the best" gym. It's intentional, well programmed, and actually cares about progress. Huge shout out to the coaches I have worked with so far- Lisa, Jeremy, Patrick, Kobe. They have all been phenomenal. Super knowledgeable, patient, and great at pushing you just enough while still making sure form and safety come first. The weekday programming is thoughtfully structured around specific lifts and muscle groups (deadlifts, squats, lower body, etc.), which makes progress feel real and measurable. And Saturdays are my absolute favorite. The weekend training sessions with Lisa and Patrick are something I genuinely look forward to. I try very hard not to miss them. Challenging, fun, and such a great way to end the week feeling strong and accomplished. One of the things I love most is the community. The people who train here are supportive, encouraging, and actually cheer each other on. It's motivating in the best way. No ego, no weird gym energy, just people showing up and doing the work together. Overall, Strength Camp SF has helped us build consistency, confidence, and real strength. I am genuinely proud of how far we have come, and while I know I still have a long way to go, I feel confident that if I stay disciplined and keep showing up, I will hit my goals. This gym makes that feel possible and honestly, enjoyable.

Starting from zero experience in powerlifting, and thanks to his guidance (plus a fair share of blood, sweat, and tears--thanks, Coach!), I've grinded my way up to a 4-wheel (405) deadlift. If you want to get better at anything, you need a solid plan and someone who knows what they're doing--and that's exactly what Coach Jeremy brings to the table. I highly recommend Coach Jeremy to anyone looking to level up. Next stop: 5 wheels! ‍

They have small lockers just outside of the restrooms, so do not plan on bringing anything to shower or a giant duffel bag full of personal items. Evening crowd was surprisingly overwhelming. a lot of teens and young adults who work out in groups of 3-4, often hogging the machines and free weights. However, after my first experience coming in here at 6:30pm, I decided to come early in the morning (6am), and the experience was so much more pleasant!! The machines are clean, only about 30 people in the gym, and I had access to everything before I start my day at work. So far, so good.

But since September 2024 I was automatically charged $8 on my credit card. I was never notified or in any agreement with anyone or any written statement. After I noticed the unauthorized charges, I reached to the gym via email (twice) and in person to get a refund or reimbursement. The gym never responded to my email. I personally went to the gym and asked about the unauthorized extra charge. The mgmt staff verbally stated today that it was because of the "RECESSION" or "INFLATION" I Lmao Recession or inflation wasn't the customers fault, not in the contract and I was never notified or in agreement of any form. Also today, i was charged extra $10 for a late monthly automatic credit card fee. I was never late since April 2022. It just happened that my credit card expired a couple of days ago. I was only behind for 3 days! After I was notified at the gym that my credit card expired, I paid my dues immediately within 5 seconds. I was still charged for late fees. No grace period...

It honestly feels like management doesn't care about cleanliness or the experience of their members. The front desk staff (the girl working Tuesday around 10 PM and the guy who said he was her boss) were extremely unwelcoming and rude. They spoke in a very aggressive and threatening manner and were clearly misrepresenting the information in the contract. Instead of helping or explaining things professionally, they tried to intimidate and confuse the situation. This kind of behavior from staff is completely unacceptable. The management is also very misleading. Their main goal is to sell you a membership at any cost, and once you sign up, they make it extremely difficult to cancel. They keep charging your card month after month even when you try to get out of the membership. I would strongly recommend staying away from this place. There are many better, cleaner, and more honest gyms in the area.

That's when I came across the Sunset Gym this past December. I started my membership with a week long pass and eventually converted it to a monthly membership. (The payment for the week pass went into my first month of membership) Pricing wise this place is a very reasonable compared to the bigger chains (i.e Fitness SF), but admittedly you are also restricted to one location. For me though, that's not a problem as I wanted a neighborhood gym more than anything. The gym itself is great - it's old school (think OG Gold's Gym style). Downstairs has plenty of free weights and a good selection of machines. Upstairs has a dedicated Cardio area, a spot for stretching, as well as additional free-weights and an outdoor area.
