I've been training with Jose for over 10 years. Great group of guys to train with and a lot of mat time to train jiu-jitsu, and MMA.

Over the years, he's gotten better and better at training and teaching, and he's helped me go from White Belt to 6th Degree Black Belt. There are only a few people in the world with his depth of knowledge, and if you're luck enough to live near his karate studio, you should sign up and take advantage of it. After I got my Black Belt in 2000, I worked for Rick Fowler for two years and then opened my own school. He's been a great mentor and coach. We have 325 students now in Carrollton at my studio, and we're about to open another location! I know that Rick will be there to help me every step of the way.

I recently pulled my kids out of the jiu jitsu program at holan's, because of the sudden decline in…read morequality of training. Literally from one week to the next the owner gets rid of the black belt instructor for bjj and gives no notice to anyone about his departure. Luckily for me my contract was up but not without paying one last month out of my agreement, but they can keep that money they obviously needed it more then my kids training. Unfortunately, my kids made friends with a lot of the students in their class who were not so lucky some of those kids were stuck in 2 to 3 year contracts with sub par jiu jitsu instructors who only got the opportunity to coach a kids class because they were willing to accept lower pay. Take this from me there is a difference between a black belt instructor and 2 sub par instructors. Anyone who appreciates the art like I have, would only have to attend one class like I had to endure before they decide that this is not a bjj class worth paying for let alone putting my kids through. Don't get me wrong I could careless who's name is on the building I signed my kids up because I believed my kids would get a quality instruction from a real black belt and they did, but I feel like a lot of parent were lured into 2 and 3 year contracts on the name of the former coach and then fired him. I'm just here to leave a honest review about my experience and urge everyone to ignore the website because that black belt coach is no longer at holans...

I strongly recommend you NOT put your kids in Holan's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program. They have an…read moreongoing scam going on there, and here's how it works: they hire a good BJJ instructor, sometimes even a black belt, and then they will build the program with that good instructor, getting plenty of parents to sign 1 to 2 year contracts to stay with them ... and then after a little while, with no prior notice to any of the families, they pull the plug on the high level instructor and have a white belt and a blue belt (both of whom also work at their Karate school) teach the class instead. So they basically trick families into thinking they will be getting good quality BJJ training from great, high level instructors for the next year or two, but then get rid of the good instructor (so that they don't have to pay as much for the high level teacher) and instead have a white belt and a blue belt teach the class. And btw, the white belt recently got promoted to being a blue belt, but neither blue belts are anywhere close to being a purple belt, and they both are quite young and not nearly as good at coaching as the other high level instructors who were previously employed there. Don't get me wrong, they are nice guys, but they are just seriously lacking in experience to be adequately and properly teaching children Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I used to train and compete in BJJ, and the difference between having a black belt teaching and those two blue belts is like night and day. My son and I had to go through two of these scams at this school while training there, one where they hired an amazing black belt from Brazil, and another where they hired a decent purple belt. In both cases, they grew the BJJ program with these good teachers, and then pulled the plug on both of them, shocking and angering both the high level teachers and the parents. What's also bad is that these high level coaches invested a lot of time and money into establishing the BJJ program there, but they were basically tricked and used by Holan's Karate Do to scam families into long-term contracts with low-level, poor quality coaching. What is also sad is to have to have the children witness this. The children become attached to and admire the high level coaches, and then have to see them just disappear for no good reason. How do I explain that to a 5 or 6 year old? Thankfully, I have canceled the contract with that place, but had to pay 40% of what was remaining on my contract ... but it was worth it. My son and I are now re-united with the black belt from Brazil and getting amazing quality coaching and training. Please don't make the same mistake we did with this BJJ program/scam, for your sake and for your children's sake! It is NOT worth the trouble and waste of time!
