I recently joined Rex Wellness Centers because I wanted to start swimming again. I toured the Wakefield location but love the fact that I can work out at any location. I live right smack dab between Knightdale and Wakefield so that that gives me double the options. I've only seen Wakefield and Knightdale and there are subtle differences. Knightdale is newer so things seem a bit "shinier", still. The locker combination system is different so if you get used to one, you'll lock yourself out at the other. Knightdale doesn't seem as crowded. The Hot Tub is smaller but I think the lap pool is larger. The Knightdale club has more "scenery" outside the windows -- you see trees instead of offices which is pleasant. Both offer a wide variety of classes and both are clean with attentive staff (though again, the nod goes to Knightdale for having a truly welcoming front desk person and very helpful in showing a new member around).. WHEN you lock yourself out of your locker, they respond promptly rather than making sit and drip for 10 minutes and you can call from the locker room rather than having to wander out in your bathing suit! I suspect that I will use Knightdale more than Wakefield just because it seems better run and more pleasant setting. Both are (for me) a huge step up from the Y because you don't have kids running around the pool area or having to get kicked out of the pool for make up toddler swim lessons. As opposed to the Y which is much more family oriented, Rex is more more oriented towards those of us who are a bit "long of tooth" and are just trying to keep our mobility so we aren't having to use a scooter to ride around the grocery store. If your thing is to go watch the gym bunnies in their lycra, you'll likely be VERY disappointed in the scenery here. But that's ok because I feel comfortable knowing I'm not the only one that is a middle-aged mom with the stretch marks to prove it and I just want a pleasant welcoming place to get away from the daily grind, improve my health and de-stress. read more

This gym is closed too often. They have poor daily hours of operation and they close if one snowflake falls or if bad weather is predicted within 2 days. They do not refund membership dues for being closed too often. They have been closed or closed early the last three days. In addition to being closed too often, the equipment is poorly maintained and staff are inattentive. Examples include broken ice machine, equipment that is missing components and equipment placed too close together and is out of date. Popular machines do not get duplicated so you'll have to fight for them. read more

I've been here for about two months. This gym is okay. A lot of nice people and older people (because it's close to the hospital). The classes are fun and upbeat. Clean gym equipment, pool, and changing rooms. All of the staff are very nice and uplifting, but sometimes they do talk about you / your business (or other members') with other staff members. I used to be a member of Rex wellness center about 10 years ago, the Lake Boone location. I was looking for a new gym nearer to me, and went to check it out. It is, sadly, woefully behind the times. It has the same feel and equipment from 10 years ago, with really no updates. It is a bargain if you work for the hospital, and has a pool. There are a moderate number of cardio and weight machines, the usual array of free wrights, but nothing that made it stand out to me at all. And that is unfortunate, since it is quite a bit closer to me than any other gym. read more

I have been a member for 3+ years. Like any gym - which this is not - you get out of it what you put into it. Hard core jocks will probably not be happy here. Great pool and sauna. Great help from staff with any questions fitness, health or nutrition. PT for injury follow up. Massage is professional and clinical. read more

The instructor Karen who teaches Melt Core was very rude! I had brought my family member who has autism in for this class. She had approached me and my mother at the end of the class and said he was not fit for this class. He behaved very well!! She stated she was trying to get everyone on the same level. I approached management about this and so far nothing has been done!!! So glad I go to another gym where I do not have to put up with this kind of treatment. read more

It's not always about having state-of-the-art equipment. It's about relationships and comfort. I've been a member at Rex Wellness for years and I wouldn't go anywhere else! Everyone there knows my name and is excited to see me when I come in the door. I'm comfortable exercising in this atmosphere. It's not a meat market. Because it's owned by Rex Hospital, I know that the staff is highly trained and much more qualified than at other gyms. If you have specific health needs, they are addressed.
