Suuuuuuper sketchy. I was going to leave the review at that and let you make your own decisions on whether or not to visit this place, but the girlfriend wanted me to give a few details. Use your imagination to think of a super sketchy liquor store, though, and you'll probably be pretty spot on.
We'll start with the clientele. When everyone hears Newport, they immediately think of a rich old lady with her nose stuck in the air, holding a little dog, carrying a $5000 purse, and wearing a fur coat. I try to tell people all the time that Newport has a trashy side. This is where the trashy side buys their booze. We waded through a flock of ghetto trash to get into the store while they were conversing mostly in curses.
The place itself is tiny and cluttered. With boxes all over the floor and thin aisles to begin with, if there's someone in your way, there's no going around them. You need to turn around and find another path. The place was just dingy and claustrophobic.
There was an entire aisle of wine that we couldn't get to because there were a couple of kids sitting on the floor playing Playstation. I get that daycare can be expensive, but these were really little kids being raised in the aisles of a liquor store, up way past their bed time. Sure, we were annoyed that we couldn't get the bottle we wanted, but we mostly felt bad for those kids.
I almost gave this place a second star because as we were leaving I saw some 20oz bottles of Berkshire Brewing Company beer for $1.99. You'll pay $5 for those in a lot of places. But a good deal on a decent bottle of beer isn't enough to get me back into this place. read more
