Recently visited this liquor store after their renovation and was seriously impressed. The updated space looks great, and their wine selection is excellent. I'm definitely not a wine expert, but the layout and staff made it really easy to find the perfect housewarming gift. Everyone was friendly, approachable, and happy to help without being pushy. They also had a fantastic beer selection, not a big beer person either, but saw some that struck my chord. Definitely worth stopping in if you're looking for great variety and great service! read more

The renovated store looks great. Too bad they didn't get new sales help. I went in tonight and two clerks never said hello or asked if I needed help. I looked around and around but couldn't find what I wanted so I asked the clerk. He said "the guy you should have asked just left." The owner should replace these clerks with a self help kiosk with AI. More helpful and a better experience. read more

The prices here are outrageous - especially the bourbons. Easily twice the market value (don't get me started on compared to retail). Reached out to ask if any were negotiable and was ignored - or they don't check their email that they list in order to contact them. Look at any allocated bourbon. Stay away from this shady business. They will sell you wine with heat damage and not take any responsibility for it. Poor customer service. I purchased a $200 bottle of wine that arrived with obvious signs of heat damage. Foil puffed up, cork pushing out of bottle, rotten cork. They refused to offer an exchange or refund. Stay away they will rip you off. I told the manager I was going to smear them online and he said go for it...here we are. read more

I drive a considerable distance to come to Vickers. Why? Because the wine selection is the best I've seen. This store comes with outstanding references from many Sommeliers, for a reason. The selection is out of this world. Those dusty bottles the other reviewers have referenced, are exactly what we (those who know what we're looking at), are hoping to find. It's a shame that the "White Zinfandel" crowd aren't educated enough to appreciate this gem for what it is. But pick up a book...listen to some podcasts and you'll eventually come to understand that you won't find anyplace like this outside of, possibly, NYC. read more

Reading through the other reviews I will verify that this store price gouges like no other. My example is that they carry a wine called DICO which is the second bottling from DiCostanzo a winery in Napa, CA. On the Vickers website, the price for this bottle is $68.95 which is comparable with other retail stores I have seen around Rhode Island and with the retail price from the winery. To my great surprise, when I drove down to the store they had it tagged at $189.00!!!! almost 3 times their online advertised price! To top it off, the sales lady was very indignant, telling me that the online price must be a mistake (albeit their mistake not mine so honor your advertised price and retrain your employee who maintains your website) and that their tagged price in the store was absolutely the correct price. This was my last visit to this retail store, they may have bottles that you can not find anywhere else but as someone else said in their review, they store everything even their highest end bottles 4, 5, 6 hundred dollar bottles, out on the shelves, many even standing upright and nothing is temperature controlled!! read more

As a beer/wine/liquor dork, of any blend, do you ever walk into a store and feel like you're hearing the hallelujah chorus playing in your head? yeah, me too. I felt like the world was a happier place when I discovered this little gem right in my neighborhood. The beer selection was intense. The local guys here (who are really nice dudes) promised that if they don't have it, they can order it; yet they already have one of the most impressive selections i've found in Rhode Island. Besides the local (newport storm) and the semi local (Dogfish, Double bag) I saw selections from all the way up and down the coast. Too many to list here, at least 4 large fridges full to the brim with the sweet nectar of the gods. The store featured lots of microbrews and imports, and promises the ability to order whats not available in the cooler. We wandered the wine and liquor aisles, and I was very impressed with the variety and class of the selections there. I won't go anywhere else to get my special needs met. A+. read more

I am a recovered wine snob after having lived in Italy for a couple of years. I will confirm that they have quite a good collection of Italian wines - ones that you won't find at most other places. Unfortunately that means that the bottles are a little pricier, but they'd be well worth it. One shouldn't discount their beer selection either, they have more microbrews than any other place I've seen in Newport. I dig that the place is homey feeling and there's more alcohol stuffed into that place than in your grandfather's moonshine distillery. Worth a walk through when you have time to look through a bunch of the bottles, but bring your wallet (fully stocked)! read more

Wine-Searcher.com Bourbon Hunt Success!!! I live in San Francisco and have been hunting down a bottle of Jefferson's Presidential Select. 18-yr for the better part of a year. A friend recommended wine-searcher because many of the vino shops include their spirits. Within minutes I was linked to Vickers website. I filled out an online form and they got back to me by telephone within 2 days to confirm one last bottle of that precious juice was in stock. We did a transaction over the phone and this rare bottle of sweet elixir is now getting shipped UPS to me on the other edge of the continent. Kudos to these sweethearts for stocking great stuff, keeping up on their inventory, and fulfilling an online request. read more

Going to Vickers Liquors is one of my touchstones of a visit to Newport. It makes me feel like I'm really on vacation to walk in there. It's summer, the parking lot is hot, and by golly, I'm on vacation and I'm going to drink! The clientele is also an interesting mixture of beachy people and the aristocracy...well-to-do people walking in already looped, wearing reflecto sunglasses, expensive polo shirts, etc. They don't care how much the wine costs. The wine selection is interesting, if expensive. If you hunt around you find some deals, particularly in the larger bottles. However, I have not run across a liquor store with a better wine selection in and around Newport, so this is where I go to get beyond supermarket wines. If you are looking for interesting rums, this place has a wide and excellent selection, at least last time I looked. I am a big fan of local microbrew beer, and Vikkers has a good selection. So, another reason to go here. I wish I could go there today! read more

Vicker's is the perfect example of a store that is ruining the whiskey market by price gouging to an extreme degree. Thanks to the few other store that actually care about their customer that counter Vicker's absurd prices. I have no doubt they really care about this review since price gouging is clearly their modus operandi, to include selling on the online secondary market. Avoid this store at all cost if you enjoy whiskey and preserving a reasonable whiskey market, seeing their prices will only piss you off. read more

Specialty wine shop with an extremely knowledgeable staff and an impressive selection of fine wine. Not the most organized place around, but does your wine shop have Ornellaia in verticals on the shelf back to 2003? Vickers' does. At least 7 selections from the Gaja family, including the hard to find Barbarescos like Sori Tildin and Sori San Lorenzo, ready for the taking? What a find! This place has some crazy old wines that you won't find at most places. Whether it's old California cabs like Diamond Creek or Spotteswood, or grand cru classes Bordeaux, they have it! I bought 2 expensive white wines and the brown bag given by the store was too flimsy. Hence, one bottle dropped out and cracked. I called the store and they tell me that the owners are not around so they can't give me replacement. Then, the store colleague tells me most likely I can't get replacement because it was totally my fault for not holding the brown bag from the bottom. What a moron and stupid excuse for not trying to provide me replacement. No wonder this liquor store has poor reviews overall. Very tasteless. read more

They price gouge on products here. Go to the other liquor stores for a fair price. There was also a lot of dust on bottles.

Here's the deal: Note the address, this is the closest vin store to the "Mansions". They get most of the catering business, they sometimes get over stocks. If you want to buy high-end wine and you know your prices you can really make out here. They have the inventory online and it is searchable, so check it before you head on down. They have "verticals" in many top vintages. 15-20% case discounts. Not all the staff know wine, but they usually have at least one helpful person on staff. It is very tight quarters in the store, with densely packed racks, and most of the foot traffic is beach goers and party folks getting their beer. This can make your shopping experience trying, but if you want to get a deal on the fat bottles this is the place. They deliver too (I think only on Aquidneck Island, but if you buy enough wine...) read more

I am a wine snob. If you want a cheap bottle of wine, i.e. Yellow Tail Shiraz, this is not your place. If you want an excellent bottle of wine, including aged bottles, anywhere from $25 - 200+, this is the place for you. They have an AWESOME selection of wine of all varietals. Additionally, if they don't have what you are looking for, you can ask them to pick some up for you. I wanted some "Pyrat" rum, which is about $45 a bottle and they were happy to have some in for me the following week. If you buy a case, you will get 10% or more off the price. read more

I popped in there tonight after picking up some groceries at the Stop&Shop in the same plaza. Figuring, I'll get a bottle of wine to accompany dinner. Walked in and immediately felt claustrophobic. They have a lot of stock for a small space. Be careful when walking around the store. One little move in a wrong way you might knock over a stack of wine boxes/bottles. It's nearly impossible to find anything. Everything is arranged haphazardly. The staff are friendly and helpful in finding stuff. Maybe that is their plan. Haphazard arrangement = job security. Note that their prices are also significantly higher than other places in town. The biggest turnoff is that the store is filthy. Very run down. It needs a heavy-duty spring cleaning and maybe even a gut-and-renovate. After a few minutes this evening I couldn't deal anymore with the layers of dust and inability to find what I wanted. I left and drove across town to go to another store to get what I needed. If you are looking for a dirty, dusty, cramped liquor store, then this is the place. If not, there are several other stores in Newport that will be happy to serve you. read more

I've been to vickers many times over the years despite their prices being significantly higher than other nearby liquor stores, their lack of any price labeling, and complete disregard for dusting/cleaning because of its convenience to my house. But today will absolutely be the last time I bother with this place. I went in to buy a 6-pack for a friends birthday, went back home we crack open 2 and they were both skunked. Having spent 12 bucks and as mentioned before it's close to my house I went back hoping to get a new 6-pack. Not only was I met with complete rudeness but I watched the manager take the remaining 4 beers, that he acknowledged were skunked having smelled the bottles, out for sale. Don't go to this place and definitely don't buy any loose Widmer Brothers beers from there. read more

Newport has a history as a navy town, which it was until it received a major face-lift when the navy pulled out. Vickers' Liquors dates back to the navy days, as did many of the traditional stores which have since closed, like Aidinoff's, etc. If you like shopping in an upscale, snooty, shi-shi store that spent its profits on decorators instead of inventory, try a trip to Napa. If, on the other hand, you are actually looking for wine - wine that can't be found elsewhere, wine labels across a wide range of years and vineyards, wine that you really didn't expect to find, finds that are like the little precious pieces that you find in that dark, dusty antique shop that you never thought could be found, then venture in, ask Mike or Mike or Rob or expert sommelier Liz Castle, to guide you - by label, varietal, flavor, characteristics, or pairing - and prepare for an encyclopedic tour that will blow your lips off. Or - if you're at a party, and are so many sheets into the wind that you absolutely have to blow your paycheck on a Gaja Sori San Lorenzo 2000, but don't dare get behind the wheel in your condition, pick up the phone and they'll bring it to your door. This is a place to peruse and cruise, to browse and snoop and discover - not to sweep in and out of for a back seat full of Miller Lite. Vickers' customers are of long standing, and for good reason.
