I spent about five hours at the Yards location this week to thoroughly evaluate it before committing as I've been getting spammed in the mail, and I'm glad I did. The staff's attitude was consistently condescending, from the Senior Membership Advisor (Saad Siddiqui) upselling me, person trainers roaming around the facility, to the people at front desk. My main issue how the staff addressed my comment about the soft flooring in the free-weight area, which is completely unsuitable for barbell squats. When I brought this up, the staff condescendingly told me to just use the Smith machine or use the Olympic platform, completely dismissing a valid safety concern. There was a Titan Fitness safety squat bar (SSB) that I had no idea how much it weighed. I asked two person trainers (you'll see PT and their clients everywhere in the gym) how much the bar weighed. The PTs said they had no idea and left it at that. The front desk staff was equally apathetic. I've had better customer service at Planet Fitness for a tiny fraction of the cost. This place is motivated about locking you into their membership plan and signing you up to the many classes and services they offer. This place is not it and I highly recommend looking elsewhere in the DC area.

It sounds like standard cycling or spin, but it's not. The spin classes at Off Road are incredible. They are upbeat like you'd expect, but they are based on real numbers and realistic thresholds that you create and tailor for yourself in class. You don't do ridiculous exercises like bicycle push-ups or spinning without resistance. This is about hard core spin based on your Functional Threshold Power, commonly called FTP. But wait, there's more! The space is stunningly beautiful. With showers, custom cabinets, and a host of other features, you won't find a bettrer spin studio. The staff are super low key as well, making this an incredible experience. If you are investing an hour of time and money into your workout, this is a great place to do it.

Everything is what you would expect for the price point of the gym, and free parking was an important part of my decision since I drive in from east of the river (we only have planet fitness over there, sadly). The complementary training session is good, I know it's meant to sell personal fitness sessions, but if that is something you are into, it might be worth it. Now the gross/ugly: There is a stated policy that "regular swimwear is required" to use the spa in the locker room. Some women have decided not to follow this policy and get in naked, without showering off first, no less. When I said something to the staff, she rudely told me that it was DC law that they couldn't enforce that, told me I could follow her upstairs to talk to a manager while I was standing on only a towel after showering off from the hot tub. And of course, she lied. The law says the opposite, I looked it up -- D.C. Code § 7-431 expressly defines a "spa pool" as a structure intended for bathing or recreational use whose water is not ordinarily drained and replaced after each use and may instead be recirculated. The same statute defines people using a swimming or spa pool as "bathers." More importantly, the District's Aquatic Facilities Regulations, 25-C DCMR § 202.1, specifically provide that rules for admission to spa pools and saunas "shall be enforced." The regulations also require bathers to shower before entering a spa pool or sauna. The regulations further address contamination directly. Under 25-C DCMR § 201.4, aquatic-facility personnel are required to restrict the introduction of "dirt, excreta, and other extraneous matter" into the water and to exclude people showing apparent signs of infection such as open cuts, wounds, rashes, or blisters. The same section specifically requires protective clothing for incontinent bathers. When I brought this to the attention of the membership manager (on duty) she just gave me the GM's card and corporate's email. I have contacted them and cited all DC laws which require them to enforce their stated policies. I know it's uncomfortable to ask people to follow rules, especially when they are naked, but by not enforcing their own rules (or enforcing them selectively, like insisting that nobody have a cell phone in the spa), they risk a decline in the quality and cleanliness of the gym, which is why people pay extra -- for a classy environment that is comfortable for everyone. So I give a huge thumbs up to the classes and the facilities, but unfortunately several of the attendants (all female, sadly, and I'm a girls girl) are at best unfriendly and often rude, and they selectively enforce their own health and safety policies to the detriment of the members.

As somebody who works out 5-6 times a week, this class wasn't too difficult or challenging for me. Not too difficult for me because: First, A few of us would've liked to see the 45-minute session extended to a hour long session, since 45 minutes doesn't seem like enough time to really get going. Second, The bikes do not have a resistance gear, so it's different from your spinning class bicycles. I wonder what it'd be like with added resistance not just water resistance. Here's what the session looked like: a few minutes of bike adjusting, then the instructor (Jackie) showed us three positions that we would find ourselves in throughout the class- 1st position: seated; 2nd position: butt off the seat, leaning over the handlebars; 3rd position: standing up on the pedals. We did a few "hills" where she told us to pedal faster and then cool down. We changed positions in several sets. There were a few upper arm exercises thrown in where we pushed our arms through the water and pulled them back. We also did arm circles while seated on the bikes. A third upper body exercise we did was when we had to do push ups (one hand on the seat, and another on the handlebar). That specific exercise was a killer for me. Other exercises we did besides cycling was where our butts were off the seat and then we did squats on the pedals. Other things to note: Our class was at the Liaison hotel pool, which does not provide shower facilities, just three bathroom stalls for women. I bought my water shoes off amazon for $13, which worked really well. Splash Cycle does provide water shoes, and one friend did borrow them after realizing her Keen sandals didn't fit in under the pedal straps. To conclude: a bit expensive and not challenging enough to make this a regular part of my fitness routine, but a fun way for friends to spend time together and go out for brunch afterward.

Several people, however, mentioned they had done Aqua Spin before so in the vein of trying new things that are good for me, I convinced a friend to book and off we went. My first class was at 9:30 on a Sunday, and taught by Rachel, this excited little ball of energy. She was excellent about instructions and helping class members adjust their bikes and get their feet into the stirrups on the pedals. The water was a bit chilly when you dipped a toe in but upon getting all the way, it was comfortable. Her playlist was okay for this class but considering it was my first time I was totally okay with it. (I attended another class this morning that was All-Beyonce-Everything, with different moves and it was LIKE THAT! Water was also warmer today! Woot!) It's hard to know what to expect at a class of this nature. Go with an open mind. Class is at the Embassy Row hotel, which is valet only and $45 for two hours. They're walkable from the Dupont Metro, or you may prefer to Uber. Street parking is catch-as-catch-can and I can't believe I've gotten lucky twice, but then again I did arrive an hour before class start time. Things I love about this class: The seat doesn't beat your girlie bits to smithereens. The instructor doesn't move about the class cranking down your resistance -- there's actually no resistance to crank). The mood is cool and the other people are generally awesome. You're not left with post-workout malaise and limping around after the stiffness sets in. It's a great low-impact way to move your body in ways you often can't on land. Things I don't love - the bikes are wobbly because their bottom is flat but the pool is not. There's also the parking sitch, and while they recommend that you bring dry clothes to go home in I'm not sure where there's access to change into same unless you're just not very modest. Side note: We "met" the owner, Sara today who is this gorgeous woman who looks like she spends her life teaching fitness classes. :) Anyway, I've been twice and I'm sure I'll be back before the "season" is over.
