Francis is a great employee here. He deserves a better location to work imAlways helpful. However two guest get away with playing their music on a person loud speaker. I can't even hear my own music in my headset. Very disturbing to my work out experience. Other guest don't put their weight back. Causing me to spend more time in the gym because it's unorganized. Other guest smell so bad I have to leave the area. I wish there were more discipline for guest to respect the gym. No respect or rules are implemented. Never see the manager around and when I do she isn't implementing any rules either. I wanna feel safe and respected and this gym doesn't really offer that. read more

Retro Fitness is Retro. This gym is in desperate need of renovations. I stopped going a few month ago due to pure laziness but it's January so here I am again. To no surprise, most of the equipment is still worn out and decrepit. You will find a 'temporarily out of service' sign slapped on every other machine. This location is conveniently located and less congested than the mall, but it's disappointing. I'd give 5 stars to Francis, at the front desk. He's welcoming and never seems to be in a bad mood. The gym is ok but I am changing my home club because there seems to be an issue with opening on time (on weekends). Today, the gym was supposed to open at 7and there was a lady standing in the rain, waiting for the gym to open when I arrived. Since this is not rare occurrence, I knew that she was waiting to be let in. I decided to wait in my car until someone showed up to open the gym. About 15 minutes after I showed up (7:20ish), the lady left in a cab and I continued to wait another 5 minutes. At 7:25 I decided to cut my losses and leave. I work full time and I'm a full time student, with a toddler at home. I don't have an over abundance of time to waste. Thank you for your response. read more

This is an amazing establishment to visit and get your daily fitness goals done at.it provides great classes for example, self defense and Zumba.The workers here try their best to make sure you are able to enjoy your workout and try to fix any problems you may face.Also for those hardcore gym people there is a great atmosphere here and people motivating each other to be there best self. read more

I have been signed up with Retro Fitness for about 2 years and I've been religiously going to the Hempstead location for about one year. A good deal of it is that it's one of the closest ones to my house, of course. But the staff is so friendly it's become like my 2nd home. You can catch me here 3 to 4 days week taking adantage of the heavy weights. They have all of the usual and important equipment, a crossfit area, and a studio for classes which they have every day. When Bally's closed down, I searched for a new gym. I went to X Sport, LA Fitness, Planet Fitness and a few others. X Sport is huge with basketball and a pool. It is 39 a month. Only one location and it is in Roosevelt Field which means competing with mall traffic and parking. It is 24 hours if you need that. Planet Fitness is 10 a month, but for some only one location. Pay 20 to use all locations. I like that I could bring unlimited guests. I did not like this selection of snacks and the fact that they serve pizza. That was a major turn off for a place I'm looking to go for fitness. Also there was more cardio then weights . LA Fitness was okay, also expensive and not quite the right fit for me. I also didn't like the location because of the shared parking lot in a busy area. The first time went to Retro Fitness, I liked it. It was bright, clean in the machines where new. They also had a large selection of cardio and resistance machines. For 20 a month I can go to any location. They have since opened 2 in my area, so I rotate between them. My only complaint is that there aren't enough a nationwide, but they seem to be growing. read more

I am a new member of this gym. I joined because it is near my new school.It is a dangerous location. I was in the parking lot and a woman asked me for money. She appeared to be on drugs and refused to go away until I threaten to call the police. The gym itself is basic with very old machines. The treadmills are a hit or miss.I go after work and it is crowded.This month I changed my schedule and started going in the morning. There is a group of men who utilize all the weights. They are loud and leave all the weights around basically monopolizing the gym. One of the men offered to train me at a low cost. I felt like I was being harrassed. I went to complain however the manager was not available. I will not go further with renewing my membership after the 3 months. read more

It is a good gym, it has all the machines and weights that one would need. Because of my work and family schedule I go at 5am (waiting outside at 4:45am)with the regulars at that time. When I first started at this gym 2 years ago they had these female staff in the morning who where nice but were ALWAYS late which for people like me who have to be worked out, showered and on the way to work at 6:05am sucked, but since then they hired a new gentleman who is 99% of the time EARLY, I've noticed him picking up garbage from the work out floor many times and he is a nice guy...my compliments to management!!! Nothing in life is perfect, with that being said I only have three ways the gym can be better; 1. Weekend hours do not allow me to go to the gym, 7am is too late for me to go and still go to work and 7pm doesn't let me go after I put the kids to sleep, so yeah that's sucks... making the weekend hours the same as weekdays would be clutch. 2. They need to hire a cleaning staff at night after gym closes, there has been many mornings that I walk into the Male locker room and the smell is horrible and there is white powder all over the floor. 3. When I joined I was told I can go to any Retro gym and that is almost true...you can NOT go to the "Retro Elites." There is one in Queens I tried to go too and was told it would cost me $20 per day on top of my current membership to work out unless I joined that gym. Staff just needs to inform any joining member of that fact. But don't let my three negatives stop you from considering this gym. If your an average gym go'er with a normal hourly work schedule for the price this place is great. read more

Woo-hoo, so glad I joined last month!! This gym is great in size. There are ample machines offered so you never have to wait for someone to finish. There's a movie room and my biggest thing is child care and I'm so grateful that this is offered here; now I have no excuse to not get my exercise in at least 3x per week. Tried my first spin class yesterday, it was great, really pushed me but the instructor also allowed you to go at your own pace. She was great even offered me a bottle of water since I forgot mine home. Also tried a zumba class weeks before and this instructor was also great, she had tons of energy. The manager here is very nice as well. Overall good experience and I would definitely recommend. read more

I recently just joined the gym. Staff is amazing. They are all very friendly and I am always welcomed with their friendly smiles. Actually 15 of my zumba sisters just joined because of Jose. We were all from Studio 44 in Hempstead which closed and decided to follow Jose. Not enough words can describe him nor his class. His energy level and his enthusiasm about his work is non-comparable. We have all become one big zumba family. Management - I hope that you realize that you have a true asset and I am sure many more will follow. read more

I like this gym since it close to my house. It gets a low rating because I found a full grown cockroach in my locker after a workout a week ago. I killed it, and shook out all my clothing and let someone at the front desk know. They said they would inform management. Well I went back today and didn't use the locker room. I took off my heavy sweatshirt and kept it with me on top of my bag on the floor close to me. When I finished in that area I noticed what looked like a bedbug on my sweatshirt (I know what a bedbug looks like). I flicked it off and inspected everything thoroughly. I went back and let the front desk know. I will not go back to this location and I am considering cancelling my membership. read more

Wow, could this place be anymore unfriendly! I tried not write this review because I wanted to give it a chance since it was new. I was going to freeport but the gym in Hempstead is closer to where I live. The Manager is one of the rudest people I have come across in my life. I had asked for shake and in lieu of her making it herself she went looking for an employee to do it. Ok, so I let that one go! The next time I wanted to change my payment info she gave me a phone number to call instead of just helping me. When I went to Freeport they were able to do it. I just don't understand how people like her get a management position? Do they not care who is in charge! Apparently she can get away with this. Oh, by the way the staff is just about brain dead. I am going back to Freeport! Update: Thanks but I will not be going back to Hempstead! Till you find someone who is a people person. $19.00 a month may not be a lot to you but I made the choice to spend it on Retro. I've been a member of this gym since July. The Zumba instructor Leo was the reason I transferred to this gym. When classes are in session I think its very inconsiderate of management not to give us any air in the studio. This is not only hazardous to the people in the class, but the lack of the air also breads unsanitary air. Is it right that I pay membership fees each month and is subjected to an atmosphere like this. You need to change your management team at this location. read more

Zumba class was too hot. The parking lot is poorly lit at night. Kinda scary for females walking outside in the near dark lot.

I really wanted to go to this gym because its so close to my house. I went in on a Saturday morning to check it out. First of all, the pull handle on the front entrance door was the size of a kitchen cabinet knob -- bad sign --- no know thought to have a normal door knob. Past the small knob, up the dirty stairs, I find the front desk person. The staff person was very nice and offered to show me around. We did the tour which was fine until we got to the women's locker room. He of course did not go in with me. The locker room was quite dirty -- loose hair in the shower stalls and sinks, blowing dirt/dust on the floor. I was disgusted. Funny thing is, the maintenance lady was in the locker room, sitting in one of the stalls, on the phone. Lol. I told the staff person about it. He said he would let management know. I'm a 52 year old professional woman who wanted a nightly workout before bed. As a semi-germaphobe, I couldn't chance it at this place. I decided to try Carle Place. It's farther away, but It's pretty clean. I prefer clean. read more

Well I appreciate the feedback from Retro, now I notice that as of November 1st there is an additional fee of $9.99 per month to attend other group classes including Zumba, I love Zumba and I attend the 8 pm classes 3 times a week - the other days I use the floor machines .I would like to know who will be teaching the classes going forward. I love Leo and Carmen they are great motivators and I do so enjoy all aspects of the Gym, but if Leo is not there any longer I will have to reconsider my options. read more

hi ! I have been a customer of the retro fitness in Hempstead since August. now since I have been there, I have had many issues with the manager that runs that place. Her attitude towards her customers are something I would not act upon with my own customers. I only signed up for this gym because of my Zumba instructors Leo and Carmen.Now today when we have class and the music is loud and going and pumping, the manager sends one of her staff to tell Leo that the music was too loud and that it had to be lowered! Where in the world do they lower music in a Zumba class?! Zumba is a big workout party that makes us feel good and makes us challenge ourselves. Me and my mother both signed up to this gym for the Zumba classes specifically. We don't think it's fair to be charged such an amount every month to be told to lower the music and it was during the class that this was said. So the entire class felt some type of way and it was such a turn off and unprofessional. The staff there is wonderful they greet me and my mother every time, they know we are duo. This manager here, she does not say a word, chooses which day to address us. Now just to let your corporation know, me and my mother know a lot of people through our job. We recommend so many people to come down to try out Leo and Carmen's classes. We always have people trying out your gym and trying the guest pass and paying the ten dollars. I don't think this manager you have here is right for the job. Leo and Carmen know the people and are for the people. Your manager is only there for a paycheck. I was extremely angry about the music being lowered and the air not being on. The desk was told about the air not being on and she refused to put it on. That is a health risk, we have a lot of older people in the class as well. I'm about action and I need to see some changes. If not then many people will leave the gym we don't care what the consequence is. You either need to have a chat with blondie or we take further action above and beyond you. I have seen the other reviews and they have made the same complaint. If nothing happens I will definitely be speaking to the mayor of Hempstead and protesting against error fitness. They just did a grand opening on Saturday and they should have not opened anything until you have removed the manager. She is the worst thing that could possibly have happened to the gym. It's an ugly environment. Also I would like to add the woman who watched the kids at night before 9 pm. She is not very friendly and scary. I had invited a friend of mine to try the Zumba class and she had to bring her young son. My friend had to leave early because she could not take care of her child. It was the child's first time their and she just brought the crying child to the Zumba class. Understand he guest paid for the class and she never did Zumba before. As a result she had to leave class fifteen minutes into the class and she was very angry and never came back. But my major concern is the manager. Please hire a leader and hire someone who is passionate about fitness. Your manager knows nothing about fitness and couldn't help me through a hole in the wall. We need someone at the gym who can smile at everyone and anyone that walks through That door and make me feel like a VIP. The staff there is incredible every last one of them. Every time me and my mother walk in its a smile and hello every time. Leo and Carmen are amazing people and they are definitely the leaders on the gym. I feel like your manager is limiting the Zumba classes it's full potential and I find it not fair. Like I stated before , if no action is taken, I will go above and beyond Yelp and speak to the mayor and city of Hempstead. Thank you for taking the time out to read this dilemma. I joined Retro in July. I only joined because of the Zumba classes. Hempstead is not the safest town, and the area the gym is located has poor lighting at night. I'm actually scared when I walk to and from the gym to my car because of the area and poor lighting. The management is another story in itself. The manager Lindita is not a people person. She is obnoxious and rude. Very rude, as a manger she should care what the customer thinks and has to say. When I signed up she gave me an attitude because I was asking so many questions. She told me there was no cancellation fee, which is not true! Just to get customers she gave many members different info. I will not be going back to this "gym". They need better management, steady Zumba instructors with steady schedules. There are times I go to Zumba and the class is cancelled. If Retro doesn't change management add more lighting to the parking lot and better Zumba classes this gym will be closing down in the near future. read more
