There are moments in life when you find yourself completely out of your element, far from home, and…read moregenuinely scared. That was me. I live in Northern California, and I was in Tennessee when my retina detached. The thought of potentially losing vision in one of my eyes, while being 2,000 miles from my doctors, my people, and my comfort zone, was terrifying. Southeastern Retina Associates was exactly what I needed when I needed it most. From the moment I walked in, something shifted. The receptionist set the tone immediately. Warm, grounded, no pretense. That feeling carried through every single person I encountered, right up to the doctor. This wasn't a place where staff are just doing their jobs. These are people who genuinely seem to understand that the person sitting across from them is scared and needs more than clinical competence. They need to feel safe. And I did. The care was top-notch, but honestly, it was the humanity behind it that I will remember. When you're far from home and your eyesight is on the line, trust is everything. I trusted every person in that office. If you are visiting from out of state, or even if you are local and need a retina specialist, I cannot recommend this practice highly enough. They showed up for me in a way I won't forget

The staff is very kind. It isn't hard to get an appointment or speak to someone directly. The ONLY negative is - it's an all day event. It takes forever! The waiting room always is comfy. They have coffee, water, candy and flat screens with HGTV. It's never hot or stuffy. Front desk staff keeps us laughing. I wouldn't go anywhere else. On a personal side note-i was working a great job when I came in EMERGENCY. It was then I learned I would not drive or work and was going blind. My whole world changed. I lost my job and insurance. Dr G said my eyes were more important than money and they would work with me. His bedside manor is unlike any other.

Upon walking in, I received a warm welcome from the woman at the front desk. Then came paperwork and a brief wait, after which I was taken into the room for my fundus photographs by another member of his staff. She was very professional and the process did not take long. Soon after I was seen by Dr. Stone. Unlike other doctor's offices, where they usher you in and out quickly, Dr. Stone spent time sitting and talking with me. He immediately made me feel comfortable and I got the sense that he genuinely cared about me. He explained what was going on clearly and at the end asked me if I had any questions (I did not). Overall, Dr. Stone and his staff are fantastic and I definitely plan to go back.

I first thought this was just my bad luck, but after talking with some other patients while waiting for my eyes to dilate I found it was the same for 3 of the 4 patients in the room. The staff is the most unprofessional I've seen in any doctor's office. They seem to believe they are there to socialize rather than care for the patients. They are loud and act more like teens in a high school hallway than adults in a physician's practice. They also don't understand insurance or how to check the amount I was responsible for paying. They still owe me $15 for an upfront payment they overcharged but I will report this to my insurance and let them deal with it. I have moved on to TN Retina. The drive is a pain but the treatment and office staff are worth every minute.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience trying to schedule care with Woolfson Eye Institute…read moreand Dr. Gaby Gutierrez. My appointment has now been canceled twice, including after I had already waited months to be seen. The most recent cancellation was not a same-day emergency situation. I was notified weeks in advance that the appointment would not be kept, yet the clinic did not provide a reasonable solution or help me get scheduled with another provider. For a medical practice, especially one dealing with eye care, reliability and communication matter. Patients arrange their schedules, wait for appointments, and trust that the office will respect their time. Repeated cancellations without an appropriate alternative creates a real access-to-care problem. After this happened, I looked further into the clinic's reviews and complaints and saw many other people reporting concerns about scheduling, communication, billing, insurance issues, and overall poor patient experience. Based on my own experience, those complaints are concerning. At this point, I do not feel confident moving forward with this office. I am thankful I found out before receiving treatment, because repeated scheduling issues and poor communication are warning signs for me. For anyone dealing with repeated cancellations or difficulty accessing care, it may be worth contacting your insurance company and reporting it as an access-to-care or network adequacy issue. Insurance companies need to know when listed in-network providers are not actually providing timely or reliable access to care. I do not believe contacting management will resolve my concern because this appears to be an ongoing pattern based on multiple reviews and complaints. I will be looking for another provider.

Unless you are willing to go to Bascolm-Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Dr. Jacobson is your best bet. He PERSONALLY took the time to understand my entire medical history (rather than having some tech-schooled, slow-writing medical assistant who understands about half of what you are telling her and writes down even less). Even more importantly, Dr. Jacobson demonstrated the ability to think about how existing medical conditions may affect my eyes. After having lots of experiences with MDs of all types, I can honestly say that Dr. Jacobson is definitely a rare and dying breed. Not only does he have an exceptional attention to detail, really good communication skills, outstanding capabilities and the most current knowledge of retinal disease, treatment and care -- he also seems to be a genuinely nice guy. The other MDs in the practice seem equally skilled...I don't have as much first hand experience with them except to say that I had an after-hours emergency and had to page the on-call MD. My call was returned in less than 2 minutes! Dr. Rivalese also offered to see me in the office on Saturday AM. Impressive that they are so responsive to non-life threatening emergencies. Most other MDs would tell their patients to "go to the ER"...but the ER can't do much for eye problems except charge you $2k and tell you to "follow up with your doctor on Monday". Sure, having eye/retina problems is terrible! But knowing that there is competent, professional care is reassuring. Give Georgia Retina and Dr. Jacobson in particular a try...I think they have several locations: Decatur, Riverdale, Perimeter, etc.
