After examination Dr. Adams said that my husband had a tear on the retina in the right eye and a "scratch" on the retina in the left eye. He recommended surgery immediately on the right eye. Though Dr. Adams said the left eye could be monitored over time, my husband elected to have the surgery on that eye the next day. Even though they squeezed in his appointments, there was not a long wait at all. After the surgeries, Dr. Adams told my husband it was good he'd come in right away as he could have suffered permanent vision loss had he waited too long. Dr. Adams was thorough and explained the procedure carefully and even though it was a first- time emergency appointment, my husband was never rushed and felt comfortable during the whole experience. The office itself is extremely nice and the staff is efficient and friendly. The waiting room has the most comfortable chairs, a Nespresso coffee machine, and a bowl with Godiva chocolates. There is plenty of parking around the medical center where DC Retina is located. Hopefully you will not need a retina specialist, but if you do I highly, highly recommend Dr. Adams at DC Retina.

Dr. Pappas himself is amazing - adept at diagnosing and treating extremely delicate areas of the eye and retina, calm when explaining procedures to nervous patients (like me!) and willing to take as much time as needed to answer questions and conduct follow up visits. However, when I had a previous tear some years ago, the other practice scheduled at most one follow up visit. This doctor asked me to come in 3-4 times following the tear to follow up. This seemed excessive. It turns out this practice is owned by a private equity group, which I suspect has pressured the doctors into scheduling more appointments than are really needed by patients. Then a few weeks ago I get a bill from a collections agency. I checked my records and I had not only already paid these bills, but paid them twice in error because the Retina Group did not credit my previous payment. I have called the billing department to get a refund, but have not been able to reach a person after repeated attemps.

I followed his post-operative instructions to the letter. I also decided to regularly take eye health supplements. Fourteen years later, I needed cataract surgery in the same eye and then 8 months after that I needed a laser capsulotomy for a secondary cataract that developed again in the same worrisome eye. After all of these procedures, I'm now getting 20/20 vision in that eye with use of prescription glasses which I always needed for driving. The directions for finding the office aren't not good. The directions for parking aren't very clear. If you have to get your eyes dilated, I do not recommend parking in the garage. The front office staff aren't friendly and give off the vibe that they're only there cause it's a job. The tech staff that does all the intake and testing also don't seem like happy people. I was even preparing myself to not be seen for my tardiness but I was seen relatively soon after I completed my paperwork. The check in staff was very professional, the office was clean, quiet, and comfortable -there were even snacks in the "inner" wait room. I met with Dr. Phillips- he was personable and knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I was sure I'd found my MD eye specialist. My followup visit was to the Bowie office which was closer. I WAS ON TIME :) The Bowie office too was inviting, clean. And quiet. The staff here, too, were patient, they are working to smooth somemhiccups and train new personnel, but in all it was a really great experience. Again I met Dr. Philip and he was he same "on point" thoroigh self. The office is set in what may be a new office building space. The building lobby is cool.

Now for the past two years I have been seeing Dr Gupta. All three doctors are gems. I've never had a problem, making an appointment or any problems with the receptionist. I have found that making an appointment at 8:30 in the morning is the key to getting in and out quickly. They really do a thorough job with all the routine checks for a standard eye exam. My mom has glaucoma, so it's important for me to keep a check on my eye health. I've got that covered here for a small copay with my insurance.
