Oxtail

Delicious local food, cooked like your grandma would have... we oxtail and grilled veal, both cooked to perfection and flavors on spot. The waiters were absolutely the nicest and the cook outstanding.

Alheira - sausage

Food was homey, something your Portuguese grandmother would make! We started with Alheira ( sausage grilled) then we dined on stewed octopus, and a roasted pork dish called Tripas a moda do Porto. Like a pot roast of pork and potatoes. All excellent. Our wine which was recommended was not expensive but very good (Casa Santar). Atmosphere was more local which we prefer, so not fancy, but clean and our waiter was a delight. Great first nite in Porto!

Coffee to end dinner- perfect

This restaurant was fantastic! We had originally tried to go to a tapas place nearby. When they didn't have seats available we asked the host- where would you go to eat right for an authentic Portuguese dish and he recommended O Rapido. The service was outstanding. We had the best time with our server, she was truly excellent. She brought us some samples to help make up our minds and explained each dish perfectly. And of course she kept our wine glasses full! We tried several entrees and several desserts. This was truly one of our favorite restaurants we visited and was very near to our hotel. There wasn't a single dish or dessert (or wine glass) that wasn't consumed completely! Highly recommend stopping by here!

This was such an amazing hidden gem. Small, cozy place with very delicious and authentic Portuguese food. They start you off with olives, bread, and delicious crackers & Portuguese cheese... I wish every restaurant did this! I was full before I even started the meal. I got an appetizer too (which looking back, was probably unnecessary because their portions are huge!). Their sausage appetizer is amazing. Their wines are local and delicious as well. I like their vino verde, which is white wine made from a green grape. Their meat dishes are humungous and SO good!

English translation: not sure I'd describe tripe as pig guts, but you get the poinr

What a delight! Like half of all visiting tourists in Porto, taking our chances w/o reservations at Tapabento which was overbooked, we came upon O Rapido just 20 meters further on Rua Madeira A modest looking, intimate family-style Portuguese restaurant. Starting with unforgettable fried sardines and moving on to fresh local fish all at very reasonable prices. Lovely friendly staff. A Portuguese-only wine list with hidden treasures I should add portions are generous They offer olives as free appetizers We ended pleased that Tapabento was full!

The food - top notch "typical" Portense. The tripe in particular was amazing. The service was even better! Can't say enough good things.

Terra Nova Restaurante - The best octopus risotto

A foodie friend of mine recommended this spot - it was a recommendation from HIS foodie friend. We…read morehad just been in Portugal for a couple of days and hadn't really had any amazing culinary experiences yet. This restaurant was about a 15 minute walk from our hotel, by the water. In the evenings that walk by the water is pretty busy - we lucked out and there was one empty table for 2 people at this restaurant. We were seated immediately. Our waiter was very warm and friendly. We ordered two dishes - the squid ink risotto which had octopus and the Bacalhau pasta with tomatoes in a kind of saucey broth and some flambeed prawns. The prawns came first and the sauce on it was subtle, very nice. We shared a bottle of dry white wine that was lovely and light - it went down a little too easily. When the mains came, I tried the squid ink pasta first - it was beautiful and buttery. I wouldn't normally order octopus, but that's what the dish came with and it was the top recommend from our friend's friend. The octopus was cooked decently, but I've definitely had it more tender. And then I tried the bacalhau pasta.... The pasta was made in house, the broth that it came with along with the richness of the tomatoes and the saltiness of the bacalhau was just heavenly. I'm going to be thinking about that dish for a long time - it was unique and just absolutely unforgettable and delicious. During our dinner they had to turn quite a few groups away because they were too busy. Definitely worth coming to for that pasta dish!

We didn't have a reservation so we were seated downstairs. You don't have a view of the river, and only about 3-4 tables can fit in the downstairs space, but it was a great little spot. The food was delectable. I had the codfish homemade pasta. Wow! You could taste how fresh the pasta was. And the plate is a work of art, truly. We had a green wine that paired perfectly with our meal. All 4 of us loved our meal. My brother also ordered the codfish pasta, my dad and SIL ordered the codfish with cornbread breading and they loved that dish as well. For dessert, we had a pumpkin and cheese dish which actually worked really well together. It was like a pumpkin puree with pieces of cheese. Very unique, but very tasty. We would undoubtedly come back here. It's right along the river so you have a perfect little stroll afterwards.

No one ever picked up the phone, no luck online. We walked up and got lucky on the early side of dinner as we were willing to squeeze into a too small table. Worth it.

Around noon, someone did show up briefly to post a sign out front saying they were going to be opening at 12:45 that day (I asked out of curiosity; sounds like it's *often* 12:30, but it's really mostly a "they'll open when they want to" kind of place.) I knew it'd be the sort of place that would fill up immediately, so I got back at 12:30. At least that day, it turns out they still had 1 table left after they sat everyone there before they opened - that last table got claimed at 1, 15 minutes later. It's not a large space, and word is out for good reason. Given it's not a large space, it was also easy for them to have excellent service, which they did. You could tell they were all passionate about the place, and again, for good reason - it was great. Definitely one of the best meals we ate on that trip. Between the two of us, we tried: Complimentary bread and olive oil. One OMG fantastic, wonderful fish soup. The sort of soup you'd want to eat every day if you could. Croquettes that were pretty good. Enjoyable enough, perfectly crispy, a little too salty. Not nearly as memorable as everything else. The seafood rice stew for 2 - a description I always question ("for 2"), but true in this case. It was quite large - and great. Excellent shrimp, which I'm picky about. I'm even pickier about shellfish (clams, mussels, etc). I was expecting to give my wife most of them, but I did *not* do that. They really know how to get and cook the best seafood here. The rice at the top of the stew wasn't anything particular to mention - filling, though, and warming for the drizzly day it'd been that morning. The rice at the *bottom* of the stew, that'd been slowly cooking in hot stew the whole time, was *very good*. :D Wine-wise, they have like a hundred bottles of wine by the whole bottom, some very expensive, some *surprisingly* reasonably priced, but we also didn't need a whole bottle of wine with lunch - by the glass, they just had one red and one white house wine (also solidly priced, though, for a place like this, 6 euros (Be way more than that in the US. I had the red with the stew - solid.) Also a handful of solid-looking ports by the glass, one of which I had with dessert, a reserva tawny for 6.50 euros. After eating the stew, my wife tapped out. I was also pretty full, but I'd spent a lot of effort getting here and I was *gonna* have dessert, darn it. Had what was basically just a whole roasted stewed apple, cooked down until it turned to pudding. Super good. Went really well with a reserva tawny port. This place was great.

Even on a busy Saturday evening, we were greeted and seated quickly. We sat outside, which was lovely as the day's warmth cooled into the evening. Our waiter was a highlight: personable and genuinely friendly. He even gave us recommendations for places to see while we were in Porto, which made us feel welcome rather than rushed. I had the prawns with squid ink pasta and a nice glass of red wine, and my husband ordered the steak frites with a glass of sangria. We topped it off with cappuccinos. We liked the creativity of the menu and some of the chances they took with ingredients.  When service is slow and unsteady, it always impacts the experience and the way the food can be enjoyed.  Waiving down waiters for drinks is always a buzz kill before a buzz,  as is watching diners arrive later and get theirs first.   The tuna tartare was fresh and tasty when it did show up. I am not a big capers fan so i was pleasantly surprised when it had none.  The crunchy rice strings added some  texture and made the presentation at the table a photo shot (not shown here). I was slow before they mixed it table-side with a fresh quail egg.  I had high hopes for the shrimp dish.  The presentation was great but the tiny shrimp were overwhelmed by the crunchy, but oil soaked outside shell.  Maybe we drew a bad batch.  The sea bass was sad.  When a fish is served skin side up it needs to be crispy and ours was soggy and tasteless.  We love pasta so were hoping the tortelloni would save the dish. It did not but could have. One of them had unfolded and they were too al dente. The price to servicing size to quality were off balance.  There were other dishes that may have been better but we will not know since we would venture to other places before we returned.
