This is a true hidden gem in Obidos, Portugal. The restaurant is on the second floor...the kitchen is on the first floor, not much of a sign outside. Inside there's just an arrow sign that says 'Restaurante', pointing up the stairs. The food is terrific, and the service is wonderful. It's real Portuguese food, cooked by native Portuguese with a great view and great service. We ate here 4 times over 3 days and had wonderful conversations with great food. During that time however, we noticed many rude tourists. We made every effort to learn Portuguese before we traveled to Portugal, and I would say that we failed...But the fact that we tried and were respectful and used our manners meant we had great conversations; that's why we travel... to meet people, learn about their culture and immerse in it for a short period of time. Alcaide is open for lunch, but they open for dinner at 7 and they reserved a regular table for us at 7:15. This was wonderful because it was after all the tour buses and the rude tourists had gone for the day. The food as we were told ...is not foo foo food; you won't leave hungry, but you will leave wishing you had more. That's how you know it was a great meal :) The cherry tomato and cheese salad, the octopus, the beef medallion's, the lambchops, the sea bass, the monk fish, lamb tenderloin... all cooked to perfection and so incredibly tasty. My favorite was the goat cheese with olive oil and honey, and the beef medallions with cream port wine sauce. Don't forget the bread to mop up everything :) Writing a review for a great restaurant is always a joy and this is at the top. Alcaide is run by incredibly nice people who care, and it shows. I hope others experience the charm and joy here that we did. We miss it. read more
