The bill left a terrible after taste. These are Manhattan prices in La Malbaie. We opted for the two-plate option (big mistake), which essentially leaves you with two rather small portions... for $62. You should go for 3 plates at $72 (a better value) but we didn't feel up to it. I had the (2) scallops from Magdalena islands which were very good followed by the lamb shoulder which was very disappointing for the price. The ingredients are mostly from the region (serving anything else would've been insulting if you ask me) but they do not justify the price. The wine pairings are somewhat "boring", they could really up their game with non-SAQ wines. You can do better in the region if you want to taste local ingredients, Vice-Versa really needs to take another look at their prices, especially the 2 plate option. read more

Don't let the plates' size fool you, the 3 courses menu is more than enough to content you, especially if you choose the wine option, carefully picked to match your food. The food was not up to the price. It was missing flavor. I didn't enjoy it at all. To think that I was very happy excited about coming to eat here and it was very disappointing. I told the lady that I didn't like what I had ordered and she didn't offer to take it out of the bill. It was a very expensive bread dinner. read more

The husband and wife chefs at this fantastic little restaurant went out of their way to be great hosts, as well as great chefs. We went back to the kitchen to say hello before our first course, and they immediately invited us into the kitchen to sit down and enjoy our wine. It was absolutely the cleanest kitchen I have ever seen - I'd be lucky to keep my own small kitchen so clean! It was a 5-star first impression, and the food and atmosphere matched. We all ordered from the Vices Versa selections. I went heavy on seafood, all of which tasted perfectly fresh (nothing tasted fishy whatsoever). Scallops, artic char, cod - all done very well. Our pre-dessert was a vanilla bean pudding with a dollop of chocolate mousse on top. The mousse dissolved instantly over the tongue and complimented the vanilla in a most appealing way. For dessert, I ordered a maple syrup inspired cake baked in its own single serving cast iron pot and topped with house made vanilla ice cream. It was delightful. I almost asked if it were allowed to pass out and sleep off my food coma at the table. The owners were so accomodating, they probably would've happily said "yes"! Top five meals of life. I know, I know, bold statement for a restaurant that is also nestled in one of Quebec's most beautiful regions. But I'm telling you, it wasn't the scenic landscape or the intoxicating salty smell of the nearby St. Lawrence--it was the food. The food was incredible. I took my girlfriend here for our five year anniversary and it blew our expectations out of the park. It's a small little dining room with a small menu and limited staff. The cooks are just a few steps away in the kitchen but it never felt intrusive. Labour day weekend was a little busy for this little restaurant (and very loud), and sure, there were times when we felt like our server was too overwhelmed to remember us.... but I can't let it impact this review in anyway because I can't let it take away from the sense of urgency I must pass on to you, the reader, on how much you need to eat here if you are in this neck of the woods. My date and I did the three-entree meal, where you choose three medium sized entrees served one after another that is prepared by either the wife or husband of the operation. Choosing the wife or husband meant you were choosing a specific style of cooking with similar ingredients. Each and every entree had something unique and remarkable about it. My girlfriend, who hates (passionately hates) mushrooms ate a chanterelle without realizing it and did not bat an eye. A highlight for me was the 1608 cheese risotto paired with the suggested Italian red wine. Perfection. The added touches of the amuse-buches and the pre-dessert dessert made this meal more special. Pricey, sure, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I feel like I have to change every five star review I've ever written to four stars because this place has set a new bar. read more

Absolutely top rate. The host was gracious and helpful. The chefs invited us into their kitchen and spent time explaining their restaurant and their creations with us. The restaurant, including the kitchen, was extremely clean and comfortable. The menu was varied - I ordered arctic char, veal and quail, with a foil gras appetizer and two desserts. Everything was perfect, but the arctic char (from the "versa" menu) was my favorite. Truly a 5 Star dining experience. Vices Versa is unique and memorable. The idea of the restaurant, with its two chefs and two menus, already makes it very interesting. But what makes it great is that the food really is amazing and service is just perfect. Everything we ordered was delicious. The amount of food that comes in each course is somewhere between the usual entrée and the usual main course sizes. You may choose any 2 or any 3 from the menus, which is very good because it allows you to taste many different dishes. And they are all worth it. For real! read more

It is not that Vices Versa needs another great review but it won't hurt. The place is very nice, no incredibly and tastefully decorated is more accurate. The tables that are close are not on top of each other. The hostess, waitress, and probably the bookkeeper, Mary Claude was incredible. If you are not a French speaker or not used to fine dining then don't worry. If everyone who greets you is as kind and patient as Mary Claude then your experience will be perfect. It was just a vacation for us but if doing something special one night is your goal this is the pace to go. My wife had the filet and it came out cooked as she asked. She likes medium which is pink or should be but in most restaurants comes out well done or rare. The vegetables were delicious and we assumed local and were incredible. I chose the two course as opposed to the three course choice. I have eaten portions that size as my entree in NY and it didn't have 1/4 the flavor or blend of flavors. My choice was lamb & veal and it was, as one other reviewer wrote, a top 5 meal. Americans should take note that at the current exchange rate vacationing in Canada is a great value. Even without the exchange rate the food & the story of the husband & wif eteam makes it worth going to. read more

A truly magnificent experience, from start to finish. You cannot categorize this restaurant... Neither French, Canadian or Italian for that matter. They really have their own style. Both sides of the menu are equally spectacular. Bravo to this fabulous couple of chefs. This is one of the best meals I've had in my life. I had the 3 course meal. I tried the scallops paella style, the fish with gnocchi and the veal with olive sauce and polenta. Each dish was amazing. My husband had the grilled beef with mushroom sauce on the side. Again: amazing! For dessert, we shared the fondant de chocolat with cherries and the paris-brest. I am sorry to repeat myself but only one word comes to mind: amazing! The complexity of flavours these chefs can achieve is outstanding. I might have to drive all the way down from Montreal to have more meals here! And the service... Friendly and flawless. Prices are high, but that's what you pay for this kind of quality. Worth every penny. read more

This was a very good dining experience in a comfortable and stylish setting. We had - between the amuse bouche, and the 3 selection apiece - an opportunity to taste quite a few wonderful and well prepared dishes, most prepared with local ingredients. There were assorted mushrooms delightful in the different textures and jazzed up with a local bacon and a fabulous veal chop. We had ravioli of braised lamb that melted in your mouth with richness but complimented by cool, crisp water cress. We also had two versions of Halibut, one sautéed, the other poached and both sauced just right. We both still talk, however, about the dessert, a piping hot apple bread pudding (not too sweet) with creamy maple ice-cream. The wine list was very good, focused on food wines and offered a nice range of prices. Our service was friendly, accommodating to our English and efficient. We would definitely recommend! read more
