Our guidebook had highly recommended visiting one of the local restaurants that serve housemade…read morewines and traditional Austrian cuisine, however they all tend to be located in the suburbs as their clientele is locals, not tourists. Luckily, we happened across this one when we were visiting Schonbrunn. It was about a mile walk, but it was well worth it. The atmosphere was very home-like, with a friendly, cheery waitress. The menu was completely in German, so I did my best with my high school German and the internet. We ordered beer (massive fail, since we went there for wine), and I got a Reisenschnitzel, while my boyfriend got basically fried chicken. I found out AFTER ordering that Reisenschnitzel means "large schnitzel", and that was a very accurate description. It was a massive pork schnitzel that came with a side of cabbage, and potato salad. It was so good, I probably ate more than I should have, but I could only finish half. My boyfriend's fried chicken was really tasty as well. We then waddled about a mile to a U-bahn stop, quite sated. As a side observation, Austrian cooking has a strange but admirable ability to fry food and yet have it still taste light and not oily.

Our today's visit to Wambacher was a big disappointment. Although the food, when it finally…read morearrived, was reasonably ok, the bad service overcompensated by far the food experience. I will certainly never go there again and I would not recommend anybody to go there when hungry, because you might starve before the food is being served.

We were looking for a spot for dinner that was close to Schönbrunn palace and noticed this…read moreonline-it's a short, easy, 15-minute walk from the palace gate to the restaurant situated in a pretty little village just outside the palace walls. It's a big lively beer hall with big long tables and lots of groups enjoying themselves after work. Our table for two, situated upstairs in this massive place was the exception. Waiters were efficient and we they provided us with English menus to make choosing from their dozens of options easier. Like other Austrian restaurants we've visited this trip, the portions are massive-they make the US-sized big portions look small. My wife's chicken "schnitzel" (thin pounded chicken breast) was two large pieces that each covered the 10" dinner plate and was served with about a pint of German potato salad while my fresh fish (fried perch) wad two 8" long pieces, about an entire head of steamed broccoli and a couple of cups of buttery parsley potatoes. In addition we ordered their version of a caprese salad (tomatoes and fresh mozzarella with basil) that also filled an entire large plate. I suppose owing to the size of the restaurant (must seat at least 300-400), the food arrived super quick-salad in about 5 minutes and main courses very shortly after. With a couple of glasses each of a local red wine, the entire meal was less than 50€! Unfortunately we couldn't even eat half the food although from our perch on the 2nd floor looking down across the balcony, we did observe lots of local people, including women, who did! Bottom line, festive place with a great value.

However, my personal favorite restaurant for authentic Austrian cuisine is Schitzelwirt! They have an exceptional Biergarten in the front of the restaurant or inside dining if you want a more romantic setting. I recommend enjoying their traditional Wiener Schnitzel with Herb Potatoes. Aperol Spritz & local Sturm Wine pairs nicely with this meal. The service was excellent! They are able to speak English but restaurants are the best place to try using your Deutsch and the staff will be very pleased and create laughs around the table. Also, this restaurant isn't very close to an U-Bahn station so I recommend using a taxi or Uber to arrive and continue your night.

The restaurant is big with lots of seating available and prices are reasonable as well. We even saw a photo of Ed Shireen on the wall during our time there indicating that he had eaten at the restaurant before! Menus are in English and German and the staff are able to communicate in English fluently. They also have some outdoor seating as well. We both ordered the Wiener Schnitzel. Sides are separate so I ordered a salad while my partner ordered a side of fries. The salad was tart and fresh. The schnitzel portion was huge! We got 2 big pieces of schnitzel each on the plate. I tried to finish my plate as best as I could but it was difficult. The coating on the schnitzel was crispy and just the perfect thickness where the pork meat was pounded to the perfect thickness. Overall, a great place to grab some schnitzel in Vienna!
