A very classy restaurant with brilliant food and good service…read more I visited St Gallen to see the famous Abbey (well worth the visit!) and was sent to Segreto when I asked where the best restaurant was. Segreto is Italian for "secret" I was told; but if it is, then it shouldn't be! The restaurant isn't in the town, but a short drive away. It is a truly idylic environment and the restaurant seems to organically grow from the formal dining room into a conservatory-style outside and then a stylish garden area. There is also a big outside casual dining area, though I'm not sure if that is part of the restaurant or not. The food is exquisite and clearly cooked by a deft and delicate hand in the kitchen. With such cuisine, I often find stuffy service, but not here where it is confident and professional. The wine list is very extensive and it is easy to find a complimentary wine. My overall thoughts are that this is a fantastic restaurant. I will certainly add this to my list of "must go" places, when I return to the St Gallen area.

This is clearly the best Italian / mediterranean restaurant you can find not just in St. Gallen but…read morein all the Bodensee - region . The amazing detail is that the chef is a German : Martin Benninger. So how does it comes that a German can cook Italian specialities from agnolotti , guancia Di Vitello , carpaccio di spigola so heavenly (and not just Italian food , try the fois gras...) ? It happens that he cooked for more then 2 years for Heinz Beck in Rome , a legend there with 3 stars Michelin. If Martin continues to cook like this Its likely he will get his Michelin stars soon too. Another detail I like about this restaurant is that it has one of the best wine lists in Switzerland to really affordable prices. Some of the wines cannot be found cheaper if bought in a store.

My first Swiss Fondue experience was an immersive, cheerful, cheese-fest with great service, food,…read moreand drinks in a uniquely Swiss atmosphere. It's $26 CHF (Swiss Francs for my US readers) per person, and they bring you a boiling vat of cheese and a bucket of bread. The menu is basically a listing of what kind of cheese you want, along with some sharables and desserts. I have a deeply held, long-standing love for cheese. But, this experience tested even my limits. The rule is, you don't drink anything cold with it as it will harden the cheese in your system. Seems like a bit of an urban legend. But, the alternative is brandy and wine, which they bring in great quantities if you ask for it. The brandy shot is included. Ah, the Swiss :) The cheeses were delicious and the bread soft. We dipped and swirled with long forks. My only other Fondue experience was Simply Fondue in Texas, where you actually cook meats in hot oil. This was not that. Cheese only. We also tried some onion soup, which was wonderful and not at all like "French Onion Soup" as we call it in the US. Not even sure if that's really French. For dessert we ordered some fruit and a strawberry sorbet, also outstanding. Our server was happy and fun, walking us through our new experience. We shared it with some local friends, making for a memorable night. Highly recommended if you want some great local food!

Warning: this is the only game in town when it comes to fondue, so they are extremely busy. We did, and reserved 6:00 PM that Thursday (everything later was taken). We came in on time to our reservation, but found our waitress to be a bit on the unfriendly side. Although 95% of the tables had fondue, she seemed very put out by working, and she was difficult to track down when we wanted to order more wine (this is not by American standards, and we weren't yelling in English. I lived in Germany for two years, speak good German, and am accustomed to European service). The restaurant was very cozy. If you're a table of two you are likely to share your table with another party of two, and it's just warm and homey on the inside. The food was very good- we ordered fondue for two and a salad to share, and found that more than adequate in terms of amount of food. The prices were reasonable, although the wine was more than in other restaurants in the area. I've had fondue before and preferred that experience, but if you find yourself in St. Gallen, craving fondue, then this is a fine choice.
