We had dinner here last night, after a day of extreme Basel-tripping in amazing weather. We were sore and hungry and really didn't know what to expect, but we'd seen the restaurant during our strolls and heard good things.
We were able to walk in and be seated immediately around eight on a Sunday, though the restaurant was not empty by any means. Coats were hung and we were presented with water and menus. There were two tasting menus, both of which looked great, so we ordered one of each. The wine list was full of local stuff, very inexpensive by the glass (CHF 6-10), which was a nice surprise.
Each course was amazing. The service was spectacular, friendly, attentive, and our waitress spoke impeccable English, which put us immediately at ease. She even chatted us up about lots of cultural differences and helped us polish our basic Swiss-German phrases.
Since my wife's dinner had 5 courses and mine had 6 plus cheeses, they brought her an additional little bowl of the soup course (which she loved), so that she didn't have to sit without food during my extra course. So thoughtful!
There's an awesome ceramic stove here decorated with loads of Basel history, and it's fascinating. You'll catch yourself staring, wondering if there's some kind of Dan Brown /templar conspiracy associated with it. Ask the staff about it, they have a great information sheet, so you can have an amazing dinner and learn something too.
Another review complained about the prices. I found the pricing at this restaurant to be much more in line with international expectation than other Swiss restaurants we've been to, and thought it was quite reasonable, especially considering the inventiveness and quality of the dishes, and the impeccable service.
Would love to eat here every week, if it were possible. read more
