Veal strips with rosti. Excellent
Joanne R.

Excellent place to experience Swiss cuisine and hospitality. Great selection of Swiss wines. Lovely dinner. We had the cheese fondue - large for two. Better shared with four. Also ordered the rosti - one with veal strips the other with mixed meat and egg on top. Loved them both. Go early to avoid crowds. Easy walking distance from the tram.

We happened on this restaurant our first night in Basel, and liked it so much we went back for dinner a second time. It features classic Swiss food, all freshly prepared and full of flavor. We loved every dish we tried. Be sure to try the Rossti, a classic fried potato cake. The restaurant has a charming, relaxed vibe, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Service was excellent. I am not sure why other reviewers have complained about the English language skills of the wait staff; they were quite adequate. I went back alone for lunch one day, while my husband was at a conference. The 3 course lunch prix fixe was far more food than I wanted, but the waiter cheerfully went to his boss and then gave me a reduced price to have only the risotto and a salad, both of which were scrumptious. Best food we had in Basel.

I was recommended to visit this restaurant for traditional Swiss cuisine by a few locals. My friend…read moreand I came here for lunch. The place is located in the heart of Basel, right on one of the main promenades, so it was quite busy that day, mostly with tourists. The restaurant has a big indoor area, plus outdoor seating. We decided to sit inside to enjoy its classic Swiss design and cozy vibe. You can sense the historic charm in the atmosphere, but everything inside was still well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our waiter was very nice and helpful - he gave us tips about Swiss food and recommended a couple of dishes from the menu. The menu, by the way, wasn't very big, and it focused on traditional Swiss classics. We decided to share two dishes: Wienerschnitzel and Cheese Fondue (Käsefondue). The food came out quickly, within about 15 minutes. The pork schnitzel was flavorful and tender, with a perfectly enjoyable texture. We chose French fries as the side, and they were cooked really well. But the star of our lunch was definitely the Cheese Fondue - absolutely delicious! The cheese they used was incredibly rich and flavorful, and the fresh bread served with it was also tasty. Dipping the bread into the melted cheese made it a truly delightful experience. Both dishes were generous in size and more than enough for two people. The only negative about this restaurant is the prices, which are extremely high. The Cheese Fondue cost 38 CHF (about $48) PER PERSON, and the Wienerschnitzel was 40 CHF (about $50). Even though the food was excellent, I found these prices far too steep. The soft drinks we ordered were also expensive - 6 CHF ($8) for a cup of black tea or a Diet Coke. I'm from Miami, where restaurants are pricey too, but not this expensive, so even I was shocked when we got the final bill. Finalizing my review, I can say that I loved every part of my experience at the restaurant except the prices. It's definitely not a place I could afford to eat at every day (like I do in many restaurants in Miami, since I don't cook), but I still recommend checking this restaurant at least once for the experience - to try truly delicious Swiss food. Trust me and order the Cheese Fondue for sure!

We have been to fancier fondue restaurants around the area and we didn't really have that great of an experience with the customer service and the cheese was ok. Food: my girlfriend and i ordered the beer fondue. it wasnt a big portion but it was really one of the best fondues i had! the cool thing is instead of bread (which is sometimes dry) they gave us warm bretzels. really good! wish i could eat fondue only with bretzels! Service: they were nice. sometimes not very attentive but totally ok. Atmosphere: its not a special atmosphere. but the good thing is that you can even sit outside in a little alley if its nice weather. even at high temperatures it wont be too hot there. additionally in the inside the have a "zapfhahne" on a table where you can take infinite beer on self-service. and in the end they give you the bill of all the beer summed up, pretty cool! All together more likely a 3-stars place. but because of that awesome fondue and the delicious beer they offer i give it 4 stars!!

We opted for the cheese fondue, which includes choice of salad or dried meat and cheese starter, six different fondue choices, and three dessert options. Oh and for 65 CHF, it's all you can eat fondue! There is also the option to have fondue "Chinoise," which is like the Swiss version of shabu shabu. We had one each of the appetizers, and both were good. The salad tasted very fresh with a light dressing, and the variety of dried meats was delicious though very filling. Consider this if you want to save room for cheese. We had the traditional fondue, which was simply delicious. What differentiated this fondue for me was the bread. Whereas many places have good cheese -- as long as you use high quality cheese, there's not a lot of magic to the prep -- Baracca had really nice bread, with a crunchy crust and spongy interior that was perfect for dipping in cheese. The cheese was also perfectly heated and stayed hot (almost too hot) until the pot was finished. While we were already pretty stuffed, we received a recommendation to try the chili fondue. This was also delicious, and a nice spin on the traditional. We were really full by the time dessert came around, but soldiered on and tried the meringue option and the chocolate cake. These were also in keeping with everything else served and delicious, though we weren't able to finish either. The ambiance here is definitely evocative of a Swiss chalet, though a minor complaint would be that it gets very warm inside, especially as we sat near the fireplace. I look forward to returning, though will definitely dress more in layers next time. Service is excellent: friendly and efficient. Baracca is a great place to enjoy delicious cheese fondue without having to head to the mountains.

Seriously, this place is where we ended up eating our dinner for both the nights we were in town. They were easily 10+ Swiss Francs less than any other restaurant that we looked at; we finally said, screw it, let's just eat at the same place again. The best dish that everyone must have - the pork schnitzel, covered in a golden brown mushroom sauce, and a generous size of spätzle. Holy moly, this dish is amazing. If you eat here, you must order this (unless you hate mushrooms...) Also, try one of the rosti's. It's the Swiss version of a hashbrown or potato pancake. I chose to top off with some veggies to be a bit healthier, even though truth is that there's plenty of oil at the bottom of the rosti. On the second night, we went back and also had the true wiener schnitzel, i.e. made of veal. This dish came with rosti as the side, but without the glorious mushroom sauce. At 10 Swiss Francs more, I say order the pork schnitzel instead. When you order beer, they give you the one kind of beer they have on tap. We don't even know what kind it is. LOL. There are other types in bottles otherwise.
