We were seated and given a menu. I do not remember the name of the dish. It was a boneless thin sliced fired pork. There was much more to eat than I needed. The food was good the service was good. One thing I like is you can sit and talk about what you did today and what you are going to do tomorrow without someone coming by trying to get you to pay and leave. This is the way with most of Europe. If you are in Basel this is a nice place to have a meal. I am sure you will enjoy.

The place is located in the heart of Basel, right on one of the main promenades, so it was quite busy that day, mostly with tourists. The restaurant has a big indoor area, plus outdoor seating. We decided to sit inside to enjoy its classic Swiss design and cozy vibe. You can sense the historic charm in the atmosphere, but everything inside was still well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our waiter was very nice and helpful - he gave us tips about Swiss food and recommended a couple of dishes from the menu. The menu, by the way, wasn't very big, and it focused on traditional Swiss classics. We decided to share two dishes: Wienerschnitzel and Cheese Fondue (Käsefondue). The food came out quickly, within about 15 minutes. The pork schnitzel was flavorful and tender, with a perfectly enjoyable texture. We chose French fries as the side, and they were cooked really well. But the star of our lunch was definitely the Cheese Fondue - absolutely delicious! The cheese they used was incredibly rich and flavorful, and the fresh bread served with it was also tasty. Dipping the bread into the melted cheese made it a truly delightful experience. Both dishes were generous in size and more than enough for two people. The only negative about this restaurant is the prices, which are extremely high. The Cheese Fondue cost 38 CHF (about $48) PER PERSON, and the Wienerschnitzel was 40 CHF (about $50). Even though the food was excellent, I found these prices far too steep. The soft drinks we ordered were also expensive - 6 CHF ($8) for a cup of black tea or a Diet Coke. I'm from Miami, where restaurants are pricey too, but not this expensive, so even I was shocked when we got the final bill. Finalizing my review, I can say that I loved every part of my experience at the restaurant except the prices. It's definitely not a place I could afford to eat at every day (like I do in many restaurants in Miami, since I don't cook), but I still recommend checking this restaurant at least once for the experience - to try truly delicious Swiss food. Trust me and order the Cheese Fondue for sure!

As evening set in and the lights came on, the setting was absolutely charming and felt authentically Swiss. For dinner, we ordered two different dishes. The Zanderfilet (pike-perch) was served over ratatouille with olive oil and oregano, along with potatoes. The fish was beautifully prepared--tender, flavorful and light--and the vegetables complemented it perfectly. We also ordered the Wiener Schnitzel made with regional veal, accompanied by fresh vegetables and rösti. The schnitzel was huge, wonderfully crisp on the outside and tender inside. It was exactly the kind of traditional dish we wanted to experience while visiting Switzerland, and the rösti was a great addition. The portions were generous, the food was excellent, and the historic courtyard atmosphere made the evening especially memorable. Restaurant Löwenzorn was a perfect choice for our final night in Switzerland and one of the meals we'll remember from our trip. Yikes. This place is NOT an upscale eatery. If you have time to kill, and want to sit outside & people watch while you have lunch...well OK - but there are still far better choices.. but DON'T go there if you're looking for an upscale, quiet, romantic dinner. We went in June. There was no air conditioner inside - it was sticky hot, so we sat outside on a glorified picnic table. (the same style seating with benches is inside. Here are reasons NOT to eat there: 1) No backs on chairs. The benches become uncomfortable after a few minutes. 2) Service lacks. We ordered 3 beers. They never came. 3) If you like a martini "up" . They don't know what that is. 4) Their bar offers only one kind of vodka. A foul tasting Swiss gin called Xcellent. The fact that their bar has such a limited selection tells a pretty good story about this place. We didn't want the Xcellent vodka, so we ordered Bombay gin. It came. One maybe two ice cubes. We are regular gin drinkers. This was not Bombay. The pours were EXTREMELY small. 5) We ordered the pick 3 "starters" thing, and chose 3 from the list for $19 Swiss Franks. They brought out 3 miniature tiny jars with yucky slop in them. 6)The menu is limited. The only thing worth ordering is the thin pizzas. 7) When you sit outside, it is so loud with tourists talking and you're right at a busy intersection for the trains that roll by non-stop. The noise pollution is a problem. 8) There is no house salad. If you want a salad, cough up US$9. for a mediocre salad that is too large. read more

Daß die Schweiz ein teures Pflaster ist, hat sich ja herumgesprochen. In der Tat: die Preise hier sind echt gesalzen und gehen für meinen Geschmack nicht ganz konform mit der Qualität der angebotenen Speisen. Flammkuchen z.B. gibt wenige km über der Grenze 2 Drittel günstiger und genauso lecker. Das Flair und die exponierte Lage des Kohlmanns scheint es aber dem Publikum wert sein, hier auf der Terasse zu sitzen und das nicht immer freundlich gestimmt Servicepersonal zu ertragen. read more

Ein schickes Lokal mit einer schönen Lage am Barfüßerplatz.. Bin eigentlich wegen der Feuerkuchen hingegangen und war am Ende total enttäuscht. Diese Dinger, die im Badischen für für 5.- EUR zu haben sind, kosten im Kohlmanns 23.- CHF und mehr. Bei dem bißchen Belag der drauf ist, finde ich das reichlich dreist. So nicht. Any time we needed anything, including the check at the end, we would have to flag him down and ask. I don't recall him checking on us once during the entire meal. Service was average, at best. But the food, was very good. My wife had the pumpkin ravioli, and I had the ham, egg and cheese rosti. Along with a good German beer and my wife's choice of a prosecco, we were happy with the food....except for the bottle of water for the table.....that I was charged 11 euros for! If I were a local, or could speak German, I would go back for the food. Back as an American, I felt a little overlooked and unwelcome in the end.

I would say it was the perfect harmony of good service, good food and good atmosphere. We were welcomed on a Friday evening without reservation and the staff was cheery and friendly, they were happy to explain to us the different aspects in the menu. In addition, the atmosphere was really nice, the restaurant has a charm, it feels like you are dining with friends in a bistro where they have known you for years. Most importantly, the food was amazing, the "allumettes" fries (shoe string fries) were amongst the best I've ever had, the entrecote -the main event- was very good and cooked according our preference. We also like the house wine, and the desserts. I think I've found my favorite place in Basel and would highly recommend it to everyone.
