Over the years the Restaurant Markthalle has improved its variety of offering and taste. Lunch is pretty sweet here, it is located in Kreis 4 near the Viadukt and the wait for food is average-okayish for Zurich Swiss restaurant standards. The prices are also average decent for Swiss food (ranging from CHF 25-45) especially when you take in the quality/care taken in the preparation of the food, and the very good service I get each time I am here. Regionally sourced foods and wines - with the fresh and wholesomeness you'd expect of Swiss cuisine. Vegetarians/Flexitarians will like this place, as their veggie offering has always delighted me such as the seasonal offering of mashed sweet potatoes topped with lentils and roasted shallots. As the menu changes time to time, it makes coming here exciting so don't get stuck on one dish. I did experience one appetizer once a few years ago that I wasn't crazy about (pulpo in soy) but as they can be experimental the things that may not sound right to you off hand is a hit or miss. If you are unsure, I'd suggest asking the friendly, good service wait staff here for recommendations. The slight drawback is that the lay out of this restaurant (as it is located in a market hall) may give the feeling to some that it is a canteen setting in a restaurant, but the excellent services makes up for that lack of character. Also a positive is it can be good for slightly larger groups. Upon my last visit, they even amped up the service by bringing cooked bones in a stainless steel dog bowl for my friend's dog immediately after seating us - and we didn't even ask for it! (We immediately declined it due to concerns over risk of splinters in digestion due to them being cooked) There are also some savvy/traditional appetizer dishes - to which I was fortunate enough to dine with a Swiss foodie/chef here to try them all... I suggest you also nab a Swiss foodie here to try out some of the offerings and see how it goes! Maybe I had too high expectations... Overall it is good restaurant and beloved by neighborhood. Friendly service and good quality food. The problems i had was the followings. 1. Outdoor sitting is great but it's under train-track so you have to put up with the noise whenever a train passes by and it was quite frequent between 7 pm and 9 pm. 2. It took very long to get a drink or refill so we had to stop eating as we were thirsty and our drink didn't come for longer than 15 min. and it was a simple bottle of beer! 3. Quantity of food is really small. For the quantity and knowing how much tapa places are serving, the price should be half. Or increase the quantity. 4. Ate here with my boyfriend at lunch during the week. It's surrounded by a lot of hipster shops, so it's fun to go around and look at all the different types of boutiques and furniture stores. The market it's located in has a wide variety of food as well for you to bring home. The food and the service are decent, but it's quite pricy. Even though the flavors were good, the dishes were a little oily for my own taste. I would go back if I were nearby, but wouldn't go out of my way to come back. read more

NB: The pricing guide for this listing is incorrect. Expect to spend between 200CHF and 300CHF per couple! The location and atmosphere are spectacular. Coloured patio lights are always a good sign. The living neighbourhood. The thunder of passing trains in a historic quarter with urban contrasts. The perfect setting for stimulating the senses. We started with a bottle of the house white from Zurich, which is spectacular! Floral, not acidic, a hint of sweetness -- perfect for a warm night. Some fresh bread arrived. The smell was intoxicating and we resisted in anticipation of a superlative meal. The hand-written menu had no options for vegetarians. The one fish option was sardines. If you love sardines, these were pure, humble, simple Portuguese sardines fresh from the Atlantic. If you don't enjoy the surgical precision required for extracting it's fishy, oily reward -- there are some wonderful salads to choose from. The specials on the chalkboard require some math on your part as they only tell you the weight of a special on offer, and it's price per gram. A simple baked Dorade (sourced from Germany) for two (1.1kg) was just under 90CHF, a pig's head was around 38CHF, the etouffe was just under 200CHF. A charcuterie concept leveraging fresh ingredients from the connecting market. You must order sides additionally - risotto, chick peas, fries, polenta and pommes rissolees were carb options (~10CHF each). We took the pommes rissolees done in duck fat. Unfortunately they were not boiled long enough so despite the delicious browning there was a centre of raw potato in every bite. The vegetable sides included kholabri, spinach, white asparagus, artichokes, fenchel. We went with the white asparagus, which were as sweet as honey, tender and fresh. If you are looking for a charming atmosphere, a beautiful little glass of wine and a stunningly composed appetizer and perhaps the chance to be spotted by Zurich's elite -- come here! If you are looking for a out-of-your-mind Gourmet experience at a slightly higher price point -- go to Josef's or Clouds, they are only steps away. If your are looking for a normal-for-Zurich price but better quality -- go to Viadukt or Blunt. I've walked by Markthalle within the still new Viadukt project in kreis 4 a few times and its contemporary, alternative vibe has piqued my interest each time although I seem to recall having perused the menu online and instantly losing that interest. Today, I was trying to think of something nice for my wife's birthday that has outdoor seating to take advantage of this late August heat. Markthalle came to mind, I inspected their menu again online and this time around I was mildly excited. The menu has one salad, one daily soup, main dishes as well as a section for aufstriche / appetizers, one for salumi (house-cured meats) and one for cheeses. The latter 2 having become trendy as of late. Also trendy is the 'nose to tail' movement, which Markthalle has also adopted and which they call 'Schnörrli bis zum Schwänzli.' Markthalle also proclaims to use high-quality ingredients and simple preparation as their credo. And that they do! The bone marrow was the plumpest and best prepared I have ever tasted, served simply in a shallow puddle of fatty natural juices and fresh thyme. Butta! Soak one of two types of fresh bread in the jus and spread the marrow on thick for an addicting, capricious gastrogasm. Then try out a couple of their cured meat selections. The donkey salami, a moist and pleasantly gamey, short, cigar-sized salami served sliced, alone on a plate. Some butter or olive oil on the table would have made eating this with bread a moister experience, but both the donkey and goat charcuterie were tasty. The Swiss beef ribeye was grilled simply with S & P, just how I like it but it came out medium and I requested medium-rare - something many waiters have never heard of. And I would prefer American beef to Swiss beef any day. I don't see any advantage to grass-fed since, in my opinion, the fat and marbling produced by corn feeding produces a far superior flavor. The two sides we decided on to accompany the steak were fantastic. Again, simple and well executed. The fennel was oven roasted in lemon and olive oil and the Tessiner polenta was super fine, cheesey and very creamy - actually one of the highlights. The outdoor seating is right under the viadukt which serves as an elevated train track and makes for a very New York City experience, like you're in a big city, every time the train passes overhead. Some complain about the noise, but the temporary racket is somehow nice for a change in a city of peace and quiet like Zürich. Indoor seating finds itself inside the market hall beside a semi-open kitchen and among various market stalls. Our waitress appeared to be fairly new and slightly nervous and didn't smile but the service was prompt and attentive. I found the prices to be reasonable: Ribeye = 36 CHF, Sides = 9 CH, Tagessuppe (huge - enough for 2 to share!) = 12 CHF, Bone marrow = 12 CHF. Not a single non-European wine on the menu! Someone doesn't know what they're doing. The beer selection is tiny of course, but one I've never tried pleasantly surprised - Pfauenbier from Rapperswil. It was light and refreshing but tries to be bolder with some hop, and very floral. I'll definitely be back for the memorable bone marrow and polenta. Food and service are very good. Place is good for children, mamas with strollers and there's plenty of high chairs. I had maybe 2-3 incidents where the waiter/waitress were rude but I haven't seen that waiter in the last year and a half and the waitress was probably PMSing hard. In the 3 years that we've been coming here, the food has been consistently high in quality, fresh in preparation. But they need to cut the SALT in every soup. Generally I find that Swiss foods are pretty salty but soup should come with a warning for people with high blood pressure. The managers are lovely and accommodating. The main dude who runs the place is cool. We had one incident when a customer had the nerve to ask us to tell our child to stop drumming on the chair, on a very busy and LOUD evening. At the Viaduckt, for crying out loud, where everything echoes. He was there on a date with fugly. Please don't have children. Steak Tartar/Rindstartar is really good here. This place is on point. Design is fun, food is great. Have been for breakfast/brunch and lunch and left quite happy. They have super fresh food and modern spins on classic dishes. I like their soup/salad combos a lot for lunch. Very accommodating of dietary requests. read more
