4/2/24 - After a morning touring with lots of walking, we were ready for some lunch. Our tour guide had stopped in front of this restaurant earlier and talked about it having been family run and locals concerned about what would happen as they sold it. She explained it still was a local favorite. So that's exactly where we headed when we wanted to stop and eat. Initially it wasn't busy and we were seated at round table easily seating 6. Ordering was a bit confusing. The waiter didn't seem to speak English. Some of the menu items were displayed in a case that included quite an array. We finally asked for something similar to a small charcuterie board, and of course asked for the house wine. Before long it arrived and after we started to eat another gentleman was escorted to our table and placed his own lunch order. He didn't speak any English and but we exchanged pleasantries. Soon after another gentleman he knew joined us. Then shortly there after another, who spoke English and we had quite a nice conversation together. We indeed enjoyed the food and low key atmosphere. But we will always remember these 3 retired architects who met decades ago when they came to take advantage of the lunch special and got to be friends. They also suggested a couple of things to see that weren't suggested by our guide that we later did go to see. It's why we love to go places the locals like! Would absolutely want to return to this place if we return to Zurich!

Food was great! As someone who loves Spanish cuisine and tapas, this place did a great job. Highly recommend coming here. Service was also great. Fyi there's no English menus but don't let that prevent you from coming here!

Tapas - Meatballs, Chicken Skewers, Potato Balls, Mussels

My first meal in Zurich! Tapas was the perfect choice as it was just what I needed to refuel... but still let me save room in my stomach for all of the eating I would be doing on the rest of my trip! We sat in the downstairs tavern where it's dark & rustic, and we shared an assortment of tapas including meatballs, fried potato balls, chicken skewers, and mussels. They were all equally tasty, and I can't say that I liked one more than another. However, the tapas are all pre-made on display, and they are reheated once you order them. Not a big deal to me, but that may be a turn-off to some people. Our waitress spoke German with a crazy Spanish accent, and service was a bit on the slow side... but it allowed us to relax, enjoy our meal, and people-watch as they strolled by in the Niederdorf!

This was a brand of still water you can order from the restaurant that was the best bottled water I have ever tasted. Truly noteworthy!

OLE! OLE! OLE! I had the amazing seafood plate with prawns, octopus and fish. It was cooked to perfection, spiced perfectly and the portions were generous. The staff was very accommodating as I was the last seated customer in the restaurant and I never felt rushed or that I was considered a burden. The Chef even came out to me to check on how I liked the food! The staff service was attentive without being intrusive and they had very sound and appreciated recommendations for wine pairings and explained the dishes I had questions on thoroughly. The ambiance is wonderful as well. Aside from the burden of climbing up a steep set of stairs the candle-lit, Wood-accented decor was authentic to a bodega in the heart of Madrid. Couple that with incredible authentic spanish food and you have yourself a truly amazing dinner experience in beautiful Zurich.

Food: below average, Price: not worth it. I know Zurich restaurants are pricy but at least you should get decent tasting food. This place is just okay or even below okay. We ordered the morcilla and tortilla and grilled mixed seafood platter. Nothing stood out unfortunately. Afterwards both of us didn't feel so well and bloated the next day. I wouldn't recommend going here. Definitely many better restaurants in the area.

Great selection of tapas and house wines!

We really enjoyed an unplanned, five course dinner at this fascinating restaurant. Unplanned…read morebecause we had no idea what Jose was going to serve as our menu was in his very capable hands. Five courses? Well, that's just how it worked out. We started our adventure with a dry, blonde sherry which led directly into fresh baked bread along with some incredibly good olive oil from Spain. The first course was an amazing, steamed artichoke to be shared by two people. One with thin strips of dried, smoked, salty pork and the other prepped delightfully for the vegetarian among us. The pork strips (not bacon) added an absolutely addictive quality to this dish. Our second course was outstanding. We enjoyed sliced, sautéed, porcini mushrooms. This is where the first wine of the evening was introduced - a valduero from 2007. The nose was fragrant, full and inviting. A really delicious red wine that complemented the next two courses beautifully. The third course featured 3 perfectly cooked, butterflied, steamed shrimp along with a few spoons of basmati rice. Now, I'm not a big fan of shrimp, but these were really delicious. Before the main course arrived, we were upgraded with a new bottle of wine from the same Vineyard and the same year but, this time a riserva. The nose was neutral in comparison to our first bottle. But after 30 minutes, the wine opened up and was an absolute delight with the rest of our meal. There were two main courses that were served shortly after opening our second bottle of wine. The first was the most beautiful Dover sole for our resident vegetarian who upgraded to Pescatarian for the evening. When it was brought around the table for inspection, I really thought we were all going to enjoy a bit of this fine fish. To my disappointment, and probably to piss off the animal lovers among us, three of us received filet mignon instead. Now that I know we have a choice between fish and beef, I'll cast my vote for the fish next time. Don't get me wrong, the meat was superb. I personally suffer a lot less when a multi-course dinner is served and I choose fish rather than red meat. But hey, that's just me. The side dishes offered at this time included some really nice side dishes such as steamed vegetables with butter, sautéed Swiss chard, and cooked spinach. Most of us were completely satisfied after the third course. Just sayin'. Unusually, we didn't have a Digestivo that evening but, a few of us opted to sample their desserts. Which included a rich, dense, chocolate cake as well as crema Catalana. My two cents: if you haven't eaten enough, try the chocolate cake. But, if you've had plenty to eat and simply want to experience a delightful and authentic Catalonian dessert, the crema Catalana can't be missed. So, to summarize and justify our four star rating: The food was excellent. The restaurant was much noisier than expected. The owners did nothing over the years to buffer the sound so, if you're looking for a place to have a romantic, quiet evening of discussion, this is not the place for you. Hard wooden floors and plain wooden chairs, wooden walls and wooden ceilings encourages a noisy, cafeteria type atmosphere. The food is first class. The atmosphere is friendly, country tavern. The service was superb. We'll be back for sure. The four of us spent 600 CHF for this culinary adventure.

But Pergola's less exterior presence doesn't mean that interior offerings are less worthy though one could say the interior furnishings are a-okay/kind of dated. In fact, all meat and fish lovers who love a hard bargain should come to Pergola instead. Pergola is great when you are with some friends or family, feeling ravenous and want to be feed with great meat and fish/squid dishes without falling over the bill. Pergola is Italian/Portuguese food, so you cannot do wrong with one or the either. Be careful - the menu is quite extensive too. For the starters I would highly recommend the Sepia (Squid). Enough to nibble between 2-3 people, but they do serve this as a main course with Spanish rice. For the main, depending on what you like, get either the sepia/fish or go for the meat! I ordered a steak entree for two and received a portion so generous I was ready to call up my other friend to come over and help me finish it. The steak entree for two was nicely served in two courses, so that while you are eating the first portion, the second portion is sitting in a warm area, so that when you are served again you are still eating a very nice meal. This type of good service with reasonable prices and tasty, well portioned food is not something you will find much of in Zurich. The customers are in general pretty friendly so don't worry about chatting up someone in another group behind/across from you. The service is very good and I'd recommend a reservation since it was busy.
