He said he always parks in the same spot. What a TREAT. A real hidden gem. As we were leaving the Sunday market and canals in L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue, we spotted this truck parked in front of the bank in the Square des Marechaux. All we noticed was a picture that said "Exotisme Garanti"... We were three social justice activists that stopped in our tracks stating, "Whaaaaat is thaat?" I mean, we realized we were in France, but still. All of a sudden, the cook lures us over... we were all speaking broken pieces of way too many languages. He started giving us samples of spicy peanut sauces, etc... we were hooked. Of COURSE we wanted fresh homemade Senegalese food. We ordered the Mafe au boef, Acras de Morue, pasteles de poisson, poulet yassa and the cocktail de gingembre (he was sold out of this, but insisted on making us a fresh batch of this fresh ginger drink). The food was SO fresh and tasty... it felt so good and comforting to put *spices* into our body. It was truly made with love. We also happened to be full for the rest of the night - SCORE. Ma-Coumbe food truck was the perfect way to end our visit to l'isle, our favorite town in Provence. That whole experience lacked the "Suburban housewife feel" that many of the other towns exuded. We will always remember this serendipitous encounter.

Out of a few remaining options for North African food in Marseille before I needed to leave, I…read morechose this one based off a recommendation from a Tunisian friend, and my need to not eat too much before a large dinner that evening, knowing that Chez Yassine serves the street food peasant classic lablabi for quite a cheap price of 5 euros at its most basic. Right off the Rue des Capucins, a very busy market street where countless people could flash by and depart with your cash unnoticed in an instant, it's in an inconvenient part for travelers of a relatively safe area of Marseille, but once I arrived inside I could breathe easier. This restaurant is almost open-air and could be comparable to a Vietnamese sandwich shop in Houston in terms of décor, prices and menu offerings. As much as I wanted to try ojja and some Tunisian salads, all I had room for was lablabi and the version with an egg absolutely did not disappoint, far exceeding my efforts to make it in my Houston kitchen. The broth is redolent with cumin and chili pepper, spiked with onions and cilantro, and rich with the chickpea liquid, and made smoother and less liquidy by adding the egg, and goes perfectly with the provided baguette. The owner will strongly suggest you order a drink, and I would strongly suggest getting the housemade lemonade which is somewhat bitter but very easily drinkable. If I came back again, with an emptier stomach, I'd try some of the other Tunisian specialties, but I do have confidence that Chez Yassine serves the best lablabi in town and I would eat it any time I needed a cheap snack like I did this day. Americans are unlucky enough not to be able to experience North African food easily and thus visitors to Marseille should explore this fascinating cuisine at every opportunity - unless eating bouillabaisse!

Totally recommend this to anyone visiting Marseille. The neighborhood is very bustling and the…read moreexperience at the restaurant itself is great. The people working there are lovely. I ordered the egg (brick a l'œuf) and the ojja fruits de mer after reading other recommendations. I didn't love the ojja with seafood (felt a little off) and would order it with chicken next time. The lamb sausages (merguez) also looked very good, so perhaps I would order differently. Definitely order the house made lemonade!

It was a…read moreWednesday afternoon when we first arrived, and after exploring the old port area we ended up standing in front of this restaurant trying to find the right place to eat on Yelp. After finding nothing that was open or looking too appealing we decided to try Douceur Piquante. We are very fortunate that we did. Nadjatie, the woman in charge here welcomed us and brought us a wonderful house made non-alcoholic beverage that was very fresh and flavourful. Now I intended to leave this review much sooner but have been traveling. So I think I recall ordering a meatball type dish, my companion ordered an Indian inspired soup and we would trade back and forth. The food here was amazing. We found it to be so wonderfully flavourful and a nice balance of the spices and herbs used. Very fresh tasting. It was only Nadjatie working, she took our orders and prepared our meals, so the atmosphere reminded us of a home cooked meal by our mothers. Our trip in Marseille would not be remembered as fondly as it is without this woman's food. I wanted to come here each day we were here but our exploration schedule allowed for only one more meal on Friday the 19th of February 2016. This meal was equally amazing. My female companion ordered a fish based meal and I, a meat one, like pork or beef. We both enjoyed my choice better this time. On both visits we finished with a dessert she serves here. It's a Comorian cake that is made with rice flour I believe, called good good or something like that. The restaurant was busier on the Friday visit but for both we arrived eagerly right around opening time. I can recommend this restaurant as one of my absolute favourites in France. Thank you
