Brilliant, simple, clean modern design is both exciting and soothing. The location is right on the river and I'd guess in the summer sitting on the deck with a glass of wine is pretty fabulous. The food was stellar and for the quality well-priced. We all had the Marche Menu--three courses for 30E. The starter was a amazing scallop carpaccio with sea urchin, salad, some crisps; the plat was a deconstructed duck breast, with some potatoes, mushrooms, and a few other things--amazing taste and lovely to look at too; the dessert was (and this is going to sound odd) a chestnut cake with marinated/carmelized celery. Sounds weird, tasted great. Throw in an amuse bouche and some cookies at the end and for the price of an extra-large meat lovers' pizza back in California, you can have a pretty incredible meal. First off, the atmosphere was very relaxing. Next to us, there was a fountain that the waiters and waitresses filled up the buckets that held the wine. It was covered in moss and looked beautiful. For the Mise En Bouche (which means "happy mouth" in French), everyone got a sort of salmon soup that was really good. For my first course I got tomatoes 3 ways. It came out different than I thought, it was a soup rather than a platter, but it was still fabulous. My main course was duck with some vegetables. My brother asked for a bite-for-a-bite (something my family does), but I said no, because of how tender and delicious the duck was. Last, but not least was dessert. We all got this really, really good desert. No idea what it was, but it was the best dessert I have had in my 12 years on this earth. It had some chocolate in it and some kind of coffee pudding. The food was solid across the board and felt less stuffy than the fine dining Michelin experience next door. Sometimes less is more. The owner may not come across as overly warm or chatty, but after a few visits, I got the impression that's just his personality rather than poor service. Not everyone in Provence is going to greet you with an American-style smile, and that's part of the charm. What matters is that the food was consistently good, the atmosphere was casual and inviting, and it became one of our favorite spots during our stay at Crillon. From the table decors to the excellent desserts and everything in between, this has to be the best ensemble of a French meal I've not only seen but tasted, period.
