With only 24 hours in Strasbourg, I was forced to make carefully researched decisions about where…read moreto eat (because I have food priorities when I travel). I am so glad we ended up in this tiny restaurant in Le Petit France for lunch! Since we didn't have breakfast, we opted to go big on lunch and this place fit that bill. The place is quaint and the proprietor was gracious and helpful with us Americans. The portions were generous and decadent. Don't come here looking for health food. Come here looking for hearty, authentic Alsatian dishes. You won't regret it. Onion soup - France meets Germany in this bowl. The onions in the soup was so tender and rather than being topped with a crouton and cheese, it was served on the side and we dipped it in the broth. So good. Foie gras - If you have any qualms about this delicacy, now is the time to get over them because it was the best foie I've ever had. The area is known for it, so there was no way I wasn't going to have some. Just do it. Don't not do it. Ham hock - No knife required. I was given a nice steak knife for it, touched the thing, and it fell apart. I put the knife down and just had at it with my fork. It was so ridiculously tender and rich. Came with potatoes (take some of the skin/fat from that meat and combine it with the potatoes as you dredge up the wine reduction with them) and a side salad (health food!). Order this. Just don't tell your cardiologist. Spaetzle gratin - And finally a dish of fat and carbs to round out or light lunch. It's like if Germany wanted mac n cheese, except way better. Also came with that healthy side salad.

Perfect!!! The experience was spectacular. The food is rustic traditional fare, with a beautiful…read moreelegance. Not stuffy or pretentious like some Michelin * places. The wine list is legendary with pricing dictated from the fact they bought the '85 Bordeaux when it came out in the market! The chef and his staff visited the table regularly chatted asked questions and actually cared about his clientele. The didn't g experience was designed for, and by the old school restaurant goer! Plus the chef grows, makes and produces wine on sight designed around his cuisine. Which enhances the experience even more! 5 star experience from beginning to the end. Merci!!

Great winstub with a speciality of "tartes flambees" (thin crusted sort of pizzas with a topping of…read moreonions, bacon and creme fraiche - someone is gonna kill me for comparing it to pizza). It's where the locals go and I have been going there for ages whenever on vacations in Alsace. It's only open for dinner: go early if you do not want to wait for too long. Once seated (I prefer the room immediately on your right) go for a local Meteor draught beer and a standard "tarte flambee". Then order from the speciality salads, beer roasted pork, or other delicious local specialities. Their wine list isn't fantastic but you will still find some interesting Alsace options to pair with the food. Prices are very reasonable.

When he got tired of making them at home, they searched and searched for the most authentic tasting tarte flambee and found L'Aigle in Pfulgriesheim. Once you start ordering them, they just keep coming, very thin crust, fresh white cheese, onions and bacon. The desserts are fantastic too. The restaurant prefers to do a few things extremely well than to to try to have "something for everyone." The result is truly memorable. In the summer, try to get there right at 18h so you can sit outside.
