Alright now that you've experienced the lows of those terrible puns we can appropriately contrast with the highs of this excellent meal. Everything we got was made exceptionally. The beef noodles were really good. The noodles are great. I slurped them down quite quickly. They were both savory and spicy. My friend who got the shrimp pho said it was, well un-pho-gettable. The vibes, the spirit, and the soul are all there. My other friend got the sated beef with fried rice. It was a bit salty but he loved that about Vietnamese cuisine! The service was also great. After seeing bun rieu (crab noodle soup) on the menu, I was excited as it's one of my favorite noodle soups! Being in the middle of Europe, I went in with low expectations. The toppings and accompanied veggies and herbs were lacking, but I'd expected it. What I was not expecting was how authentic the flavors were! The broth had that crab and shrimp paste flavors and they even had the authentic soft and creamy crab paste which not too many restaurants get it right. My husband had the bun bo hue, the same dish he had at the other restaurant, Saigon, from 2 nights earlier. He preferred the other restaurant's BBH over at SG. I liked the flavor of the broth at Pho Mai better, but the toppings were better at SG's. Instead of beef shank, Pho Mai used rare beef steak (typically used for rare stead pho). Overall the flavors for both dishes were well done. If they'd just put a little more effort in putting in more toppings (especially for the BBH as it always come with multiple proteins aside from beef slices) it would take this restaurant to another level. Promptly I set my foot in this store, which was to my surprise afterward well occupied, but the buffet and the untidy tables were not very promising. I then sat down at a table of 9, which seemed to be reserved, but no one was interested, and no one came and shortly after that stepped to the all-you-can-eat buffet for 21.- CHF. The selection presented itself in 8 different pots, most almost empty and all somehow looking the same in color. The sauces were all watery, but otherwise, there was not too much to criticize. Drinks, so the idea, everyone takes himself from the refrigerator. When it came to paying, it turned out that the host-cook-buffet-filler-and-cashier in "personal-union" was the only employee on that day. He was very friendly, and for that, I give him an extra star.
