Eating Chinese food in a place with no Chinese?…read more
I'm a great fan of Chinese food, but not necessarily authentic Chinese food, as I was born and raised in Berkeley, CA in the 1960s.
Ran into CRCS while wandering the back streets of old town Zurich.
There are two CRCS, one with the front entrance on Limmatquai, with upscale décor and furnishings, while the other has a front entrance at the back of the first restaurant, on Niederdorfstrasse, and is a true hole in wall.
We went into the second restaurant, sat down at a table, and after listening to all the squawking and shouting among the waiters and the cooks, moved outside, despite high winds.
Ordered the CHF19.50 fried beef in Szechuan (hot), and the CHF18.50 fried noodles with chicken.
Service is timely, with our dishes coming in minutes.
The fried noodles with chicken is basicly chow mein with chicken. Decent amount of chicken amid noodles, green onions and white onions. Somewhat on the bland side, but would order again, as the noodles were firm and not mushy, and the white chicken tasty.
The beef Szechuan had a weird taste, which the wife says was residue of vinegar. Once mixed up with noodles, bean sprouts, red bell peppers and green bell peppers, white onions everything went well. Might order the beef with broccoli next time, as wife wanted more vegetables.
Each of the two restaurants side by side, but with different menus. The Limmatquai menu is more expensive, and a bit more exotic, with more authentic dishes, whereas the Niederdorfstrasse restaurant has good old fashioned American Chinese dishes.
Lastly saw numerous times the waiters getting food from our restaurant, crossing the narrow street, and serving the food in the other restaurant. Same kitchen, so same food, you are paying extra for the higher rent location in the Limmatquai restaurant.
