Bún bò Huế noodle soup. Close to authentic. Flavorful broth
    Tracy H.

To be honest, I didn't have high expectations for this restaurant based on the pictures I've seen of the food and interior. It screamed "westernized" to me so I was worried that I'd be eating an interpretation of Vietnamese food. I wanted to go elsewhere but we were starving and this was nearby and the other place was too far. My husband & I ordered 2 noodle soups: Bun Bo Hue (Hue spicy beef noodle) and the Hu Tieu Nam Vang (rice noodle soup with seafood and pork) and were immediately shocked to taste such authentic flavors! The broths were oh so flavorful and although they missed some toppings I didn't even care. The bowls weren't exactly 100% true to form but the flavor profiles were 100% authentic and that was more than I'd expected across the pond, in a foreign European country! Like most good restaurants however, expect a lengthy wait if you don't have a reservation!

25 CHF for a bowl of noodle is expensive even according to NYC standard. But I found that's the average price in Switzerland for lunch. The noodle soup was excellent. Service with a smile. By the time we left the place was packed. No surprise.

This is an amazing place with Vietnamese food. Everything is freshly cooked and very tasty. Portions are quite big. Each time I am in Zurich I am visiting this restaurant. Pho is great! Summer rolls, rise noodles are delicious. Service is friendly. It's better to make a reservation.

Too bad this restaurant isn't open on Sundays. I always seem to walk by on Sundays when it's not open. A good place for Vietnamese food. Of course, a bit pricer than what I'm used to in California. But beggars can't be choosers. I think there is also a sister restaurant on Birmendorferstrasse, but I haven't tried it yet. This place can get packed in the evenings, so make reservations and/or arrive early! I've seen them turn customers away on Saturday night due to overcapacity.

It's a nice restaurant! Food is much better then we expected! But it's so popular so if you come for dinner you need to be patient for the table!

The pupu platter. Great for 2!

I'm from Southern California and so spoiled with great authentic Vietnamese foods there. I have to say this is THE BEST YOU CAN GET in Zürich. Not 100% authentic but 75-90% on everything I tried. I love the service more than the foods. If you live in Switzerland long enough, you would know that the wait staffs are really want to make you happy and not just there to clock in - clock out like other places. (I almost in tears that they were happily accommodate my friend with infant!)

    The spring rolls were okay.

Was not impressed by the food at Saigon. Went with a group of 9 people last night and ordered a bunch of different appetizers and entrees to share. Not even comparing it to Vietnamese restaurants in NYC, it was just not authentic or tasty. The dishes were either flavorless or too salty/too sweet. A bit disappointed despite having low expectations going in. Even the Saigon beer I ordered was nothing special. Thank goodness for the wonderful and fun company that salvaged this dinner for me. We will not be coming here again anytime soon. PS - The 2nd star was for the nice waitress that took care of us for the evening.

This is a cozy and casual Vietnamese restaurant. Pho was around 18 CHF and comes with a wider noodle than typical thin rice noodle but the broth was really good. Veggi pho and beef pho can be ordered with beef stock or tofu stock. I though both were rich and very tasty. Also plenty of veggie and meat. Very satisfying especially in cold days. Other non-pho dishes looked good too. Definitely will come back. PS: tofu for pho are fried so if you want raw tofu, you might need to ask for it.

After looking at the reviews on this place, I'm not sure if there was a change in ownership or they took the lower ratings to heart to improve - but I'll say this is a fantastically authentic Vietnamese restaurant. The Bun Bo Hue (a benchmark soup, far and above more flavorful and complex to make than Pho) was about as good as I can imagine it can be in Europe. Some of the herbs that are normally served with it were missing but it's Switzerland... they certainly got the broth right, and without any hint of MSG. (A sign they did not cheat with the broth by using powdered BBH bouillon which has become popular) If you get the soup with the Wagyu beef, it's divine. I attached a picture of one of the servings I had. I tried the different appetizer rolls and they were also spot on. I sampled some dishes from my dinner-mates and they were all authentic and well made. This is the best of the three Vietnamese places I've been to in Zurich. A note regarding noise - It's loud outside, naturally since the restaurant is at a busy crossroads.

Food is great. Nice portion. Pho had some strong herbs that i did not expect. I had to take them out so i can enjoy the original Pho taste. Chicken dish was very flavorful!

    Delicious pho

Great food, nice service. Amazing Pho. They have nice Thai curry as I saw. Yet to try these. Going again next week.

I passed by Sai Gon many times. Today I finally made a stop here and had dinner. Sitting outside, next to the crossroads gives the place a quite vibrant feeling - I imagine a bit like in the streets of Vietnam. Sometimes it's a bit loud though. If you like to sit outside but have it a bit more quiet, sit in front of Swiss Casino. Service was good and the staff was friendly and helpful. The food is awesome, I haven't really had Vietnamese before but I'm definitely going to stop by this place again! For Zurich the prices are ok too. If you like Asian you'll love Sai Gon!

Give you an idea of the food they have.

After seeing bun rieu (crab noodle soup) on the menu, I was excited as it's one of my favorite noodle soups! Being in the middle of Europe, I went in with low expectations. The toppings and accompanied veggies and herbs were lacking, but I'd expected it. What I was not expecting was how authentic the flavors were! The broth had that crab and shrimp paste flavors and they even had the authentic soft and creamy crab paste which not too many restaurants get it right. My husband had the bun bo hue, the same dish he had at the other restaurant, Saigon, from 2 nights earlier. He preferred the other restaurant's BBH over at SG. I liked the flavor of the broth at Pho Mai better, but the toppings were better at SG's. Instead of beef shank, Pho Mai used rare beef steak (typically used for rare stead pho). Overall the flavors for both dishes were well done. If they'd just put a little more effort in putting in more toppings (especially for the BBH as it always come with multiple proteins aside from beef slices) it would take this restaurant to another level. But I can understand why they'd cut corners as their menu is quite extensive with many dishes and it seems they're also short-staffed.

Service was not overly friendly but efficient. They speak English, German and Vietnamese (maybe more but that's all I heard). We ordered the beef pho and chicken pho, and split the spring rolls which came with four small rolls. The pho was generously sized and I preferred the beef broth over the chicken broth. They automatically give you a small dipping bowl with half Sriracha and half hoisin sauce for your pho meat, which I've never seen before. Toppings (bean sprouts, herbs) came in the bowl instead of on the side as well. Flavor was not exactly what I'm used to in the US but was good enough for what we wanted. Some fish sauce on the table would have been nice, although they did have soy sauce and chili oil. My main issue was the price. 25 francs for a bowl of pho is probably reasonable for Zurich but the most expensive bowl of pho I've ever had. They also charge one franc per cup of tap water which is a bit much in my opinion. Next time I'll just bring my reusable water bottle.

The joint is busier and with that the staff seem a bit disaffected, strangely. --food still tastes nice. Pho Vietnam is newly opened and ready to WOW folks with their fresh and tasty pho, among other things. Having eaten pho in various cities around the globe over the past 20 years, I can say with some authority that this version is lovely but not what one might necessarily expect if one has had the pleasure of eating pho in the SF Bay Area or LDN or Ho Chi Minh City, for that matter. The lovely young man who took our order told me that the Swiss 'won't eat tripe and cartilage', so P.V. doesn't offer a pho containing those tasty bits of cow. The brisket, however, was fairly plentiful. Interestingly, there, too, seemed to be an awful lot of black pepper in our soup. So much so that after consuming all of the broth, my husband's empty bowl was scored with many, many black marks. We both experienced a bit of 'pepper burn' after eating our meal as well. In addition to black pepper, the soup was well-flavored with green onion, white onion, and other finely chopped greens (I think I detected a bit of curry leaf) and, as it should be, tasted so very fresh. The usual side dish of lemon, bean sprouts, Asian basil and what appeared to be mustard green (no chilies and no cilantro) came out with the soup. There was, unfortunately, no Hoisin sauce on our sidewalk table, so I naively assumed that P.V. hadn't any. We spotted the sauce on our way in to pay. Oopsie. All you pho folk: don't forget to ask for it! Trotting out my paltry Vietnamese, I ordered an iced coffee from a very obliging and friendly woman at the counter. I hadn't actually seen cà phê sua đá (iced coffee with condensed milk) on the menu, but the non-iced variety is listed. Coffee lovers would do well to try this beverage. It's sweet and has a richly-flavored coffee taste. Although pho is considered 'street food' in Vietnam, it isn't here, so expect to pay 15.90 for a decent-sized bowl that won't leave you feeling stuffed, but rather satisfied.

The panang was oily and bland; lacking sweetness and fishiness, but the chiffonade of fresh lime leaf was a nice touch. The phat see iu was a big loser with very little flavor. What happened? Spring rolls were average. 'Wan tans' were supposed to be filled but turned up flat. The peanut sauce served slathered over the chicken skewers was homemade, crunchy and delicious.
