Strawberry Beer
Aaliyah P.

Stopped in for a quick beer ( or 2 ) in my friends case. The restaurant was extremely hot but they had WiFi and cheap beers and it was on our way back down from the look out point of Prague Castle. The food looked hearty and smelled great but we opted for libations only. I am not a beer drinker so I was glad to see a strawberry beer option for 30 czk and I actually enjoyed it. I would have liked some AC but the staff was friendly and the beer was cold.

Seved like that... :(

Starting with the good: Beautiful place, waiters look nice in their traditional chec clothes. But: Food was poor. Missed nice sidedishes, menue didn't describe the dish well enough (ordered duck and it came with pork in the cabbage), waitress could not remember order of 3 simple things and forgot our salad. My boyfriend ordered a dish and at the side we found a stalk of a pepper :-/ Typical place where they don't care about the customer, because of their good and very touristic location. Don't recommend!!!

Saw the bras hanging as we walked in, made me chuckle. We were seated right away, in a small room with a fair amount going on. I picked the Jim Morrison along with the fries and lovely K had the Janis Joplin, also with fries. Both choices were a very good sized portion with a good amount of fries. The JM stated it's spicy, and it was indeed so. The JJ is also a good sized portion, but it had too much going on for K. What really let the meal down was the fries. They were not hot, and had been cooked too long. The outside was crispy with a good crunch, but the interior was not what we were looking for. Could have been epic with nice fries, but they missed the mark by just a bit.

Got the order wrong and had to ask for an item she missed when we originally ordered. Everything was such an effort for her god love her. We both had the full Irish which included two big slices of toast and one teeny tiny pat of butter each. This is supposedly an Irish pub remember?? I asked for extra butter for each of us and one was produced and had to ask for the other yet again. Imagine the shock when the bill came and we were charged for the "extra butter". Never EVER in any restaurant in any country I've been to have I ever seen a charge for two butters for two slices of bread!!! Well the only smile of the day came was when she was waiting for the tip screen to be picked. My dad is in no way a techie and paid the bill. We did not leave a tip because of the absolute meanness to charge for butter and her attitude. Unbelievable.

The pub is situated a few minutes' walk from the castle and cathedral at the top of the hill in Hradčany, just opposite the Loreto church. It's easy to find as the exterior has impressive baroque murals. Inside, it's rather plainer, with painted walls, simple, dark wooden benches and a tiled floor. Although it's location inevitably means that it's full of tourists, it makes few concessions to them: this is essentially a beer bar, and the main draw is its excellent Velkopopvicky Kozel beer, in light (tmavé) and dark (světly) variants, as well as Pilsner Urquell, all served in 0.5l glasses. They serve a limited range of hearty Czech snacks, including some vegetarian items (various forms of cheese). The staff are efficient and workmanlike rather than especially friendly; expect a hard stare if you just have one beer! Locals tend to sit at the front, with visitors at the back. However, the old-fashioned feel means that it is one place you really ought to try is you're in the area, and it makes a great antidote to the touristy crush of the castle. If it's open, stroll afterwards to the Loreto church, one of Prague's most over-the-top Baroque creations and containing the body of St Wilgefortis - a few beers to fortify you first may not be a bad idea, in fact! It's quite a hike up the hill to the Hradčany area, but trams 22 and 23 will take you (via a scenic, circuitous route) to within a few hundred metres, making the climb for you!

Okay, so they give you a little "fob" with your menu. Some may think this like an ordering number or tracker etc. lol nope - turn it on and explore baby! The server drops off dark felt bound drink menus and then gives little Black light flashlights. As you open the menu, you're greeted with white writing on black pages with three flavor profiles per drink. The backlight revels more about your cocktail of choice based on a flavor profile. A lot of the drinks seem cool and many have a very dark liquor profile. The drinks are a little pricy-as expected in a handcrafted speakeasy very little seating. Overall, a really cool place that didn't seem very touristy, but made our experience extra special as it felt like a spot only the locals knew. Drinks are made strong, so pick your profile with intention.
