We have consistently stopped here for a picnic on our regular sojourns to the Mouse House in…read moreOrlando. Today we chose a table in a different spot since it was the first one we saw available. Adjacent to that table was a handicap ramp for you to reach the restroom area. Due to settling (I assume) there was a significant inference in height of the end of the ramp and the sidewalk it was connected to. Resulting in my Mother-in-law tripping on the unexpected lip of the sidewalk causing her to fall and nearly hit her head on the nearby concrete bench of the picnic table. While the ramp is much newer than the rest of the sidewalk and concrete picnic tables, it is old enough that there is no excuse that this DANGEROUS HAZARD is not marked to prevent similar and potentially more serious accidents! It was also disappointing that the vending machines were mostly empty of drinks other than sodas and water. On our next trip I might consider bypassing this location and stopping at the next one instead.

If you have a big rig, there's ample parking for you! But this was a plain and simple pit stop. I'm always amazed at the cleanliness of these rest stops - 95% of the time they are clean. They have toilet paper, soap, and paper towels and/or hot air hand dryers. I've rarely seen the attendants who maintain these areas, but I am grateful for them!

These rest areas provide essential services for those of us traveling the interstate system…read morealthough some are much better maintained than others believe me I've stopped at hundreds of these over the years and there are no minimum standards - the amenities in general are based on how much money the states are willing to invest and the employees that are employed to maintain them. This one although older was very clean during our stop. I rarely use the facilities at these rest areas when traveling in the RV, but after walking around to get the blood flowing again after driving for a number of hours I did here. The restrooms were spic n span clean I will say it didn't appear that the traffic was very heavy through the area so your experience may differ depending on what day and time it is. There are plenty of Truck and RV parking spaces and the same can be said for the car side, with easy access from either parking area. If you have a need to take a break this one should work well for you...

heading toward Atlanta between the holidates I really wanted to clear the construction zones before…read moretraffic got too stupid and having accomplished that a brief pause here was manageable. take advantage of the deceleration lane to slow-down coming in; having a crash on the way in will likely lead to an accident in the lot which would be embarrassing for everyone. plenty of spots once you get in (doesn't even matter what you're driving) and there's plenty of room at the tables for everyone - until there ain't. so anyway: watch out for pedestrians, clean up after yourself and your pets and your children, wash your hands frequently, avoid ultra-processed foods and keep to the right unless overtaking.

Oh highway I - 85 rest stop and welcome center, how I love you!…read moreWhen we crossed into the state where the civil war begun, I felt lonely, lost, and full of despair. Then across the river there arose such a clatter! I sprang from my car to see what was the matter! Away to the window I flew like a flash, Rolled it down quickly and threw up the sash! The moon on the breast of the clouds in the sky gave the river below a shine to my eye. Then what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a welcome center and rest stop, to which I would steer. When I arrived in the parking lot, I found a variety of Coca Cola and Pepsi cola vending machines, their bright fluorescent lights emanating from the cages they were locked in. For the record, I prefer my vending machines cage free, free rein, and fed on a strict diet of alfalfa and soy bean compost. After perusing the options of the hog tied vending machines, from which my dear friend purchased a bag of sour patch kids to share with our group, I made my way around the beautiful building (which was constructed in a very brutalist architecture style), under more fluorescent lights, into the men's restroom, which was guarded by an angry green door. Once I entered, I was joyfully greeted by a crystalline structure of square white subway tiles. The top row was adorned with little green palm trees celebrating the heritage of South Carolina as the Palmetto states. Fun fact, during the American Revolution, the Palmetto trunks were used as barricades by American soldiers due to the fact that their rubbery consistency stopped bullets with an incredible proficiency. Once I had completed my business (the details of which I will spare you), I was educated on the resources available to those who find themselves victims of human trafficking (in both English and Spanish, ¡fantastico para las victims bilingües!) I returned to the parking lot where my car was safely kept. (The vending machines hadn't moved, thanks be to the cages). Next to my car was found a complimentary bag of chips! They were wavy, the best kind, ruffles, a good brand, and the bag was pre opened! Upon further inspection, they weren't even wet, which is extremely impressive considering they had been pre opened! Overall, the I - 85 rest stop and South Carolina State welcome center, (the welcome center is open from 9 to 5 Mondays through Fridays for those who are interested in learning more about the wonderful state of South Carolina, one of the thirteen original colonies!) is a place full of whimsy and joy! I'm am sure of the fact that it if I had visited this welcome center and rest stop as a child, I would have had many many years of fond memories. Parents, do not strip your children of the classic experience of seeing the I-85 east bound rest stop and South Carolina welcome center! Love, Road Rage

pulled in too late for anything but the plumbing for a change and almost not even that because:…read moreCLEANING!! as I was idling I got to wondering about the lights in the woods... good to know there's a lake on the other side of the trees because random picnic tables deep in the woods is really creeping me out and even though they're pretty well lit up it just doesn't look right; keeps a person close to the buildings and the parking lot and other travelers. all the usual stuff is as expected: hot and cold water on demand and paper towels and tiled floors and doors that shut and conditioned air. snacks and beverage available nearby and there's lights on all over the place and there's usually people around too. but why so late at night? wonder what they're up to during the day... but I'm here when it's late and night so it must be okay! seriously, try not to over think this, it's a rest area...
