Respite is in a fast-growing area of Mother Ignacia, right across St. Mary's College. The menu is compact, their kitchen is open, basically just for baking their cakes and chunky cookies. It is cool, hip, and yet homey; small, quirky and vintage touches in the decor do a lot for the place. A hot, French pressed coffee from Mt. Apo was my first sampling, and boded fairly well for the rest of our visit.
We sampled a 20hr cold brew, but I didn't probe them about the method; I've had an excellent cold brew over at Coffee Empire that bloomed with many distinct aromas; this didn't.
Nonetheless, they do fine with other 2nd wave offerings, like a flat white, lovely in its aqua coffee cup, and an iced latte in its tall glass.
Of their sweets, I liked their dark chocolate cookie most, served warm, the chocolate chunks melting, followed by their chocolate yogurt cake; I'm a fan of sweet and savory applications to pumpkin, but the cake, also studded with chocolate, while rich and moist, was a tad too sweet.
Great addition to this neighborhood, this. The old-timers will miss Mrs Howard's, but I feel this new cafe is a worthy heir. read more
