El Paso has a rich history. The Wigwam Museum and other buildings around downtown are proof of it…read more We did a ghost tour of El Paso's Chinatown recently. The tour started at Mac's Downtown and ended at the Wigwam Museum aka the Paso Del Norte Paranormal Society headquarters. El Paso had the largest Chinatown in the state at one time. It eventually disappeared due to strict immigration laws back in the 1800s. A lot of of El Paso's Chinese population lived downtown in boarding houses. Some of the buildings are still standing today. The Chinese were no longer able to immigrate to El Paso due to these tough immigration laws. It's said that there were tunnels in various buildings downtown to smuggle them into El Paso. Those who didn't come into El Paso stayed/lived in Juarez. The ghost tour lady told us which buildings supposedly have underground tunnels in them. The Wigwam is one of them, along with the Plaza Theater, the former Tricky Falls and others. The Chinese came to El Paso from China and California to help build the railroad. They also became business owners. They owned laundries and grocery stores around town. The Wigwam was once called Fashion Saloon. It was built in 1883. It was the first saloon to have electricity. It also offered gambling and was one of five brothels in the El Paso area. It saw its share of gunfighters and heroes of the old west like Pat Garrett and John Wesley Hardin. Hardin's grave is at Concordia Cemetery in central El Paso close to L & J's. The Chinese population is buried at Evergreen Cemetery on Alameda. Once the saloon/brothel were no more, it was redesigned as the Wigwam Theatre in 1909. The theater closed its doors in 1981. The building was damaged by a fire in 2011. It was then refurbished and became the Wigwam Museum/Paranormal Headquarters. After walking around downtown, we went to the Wigwam. We went down into their basement. The technology the ghost tour lady and others had said there was a ghost down there. She and some of the ghost tour participants asked this ghost yes and no questions. If the answer was yes, the light turned green. I believe this ghost's name was Lily. There is a tunnel/tunnels in this building. We were tired and wanted to go home so we cut the tour a little bit short. It was fun and educational to learn more about El Paso's history. I would recommend going on this tour or another one this non-profit offers. The average cost for a 2-hour plus tour is $20/person. For more info., go to https://www.ghosts915.org/

Normally, the amphitheater has shows, but of course that's all cancelled temporarily. At the top of the road, there are many covered picnic tables that persons like chilling out at. Also, the very top has entrances to Franklin Mountains, which is a state park, and has many hiking trails. This road, due to covid, is closed to all motorized traffic. That is amazing right now, because you can walk up and down and exercise without worrying about vehicle traffic. And honestly, that's what everyone uses it for. From Soldiers hiking up with their rucksacks, to joggers running, families pushing strollers, and dog owners (like me), taking there dogs out for a walk. You can (and we all do), still use this route for exercise even when it is open to vehicle traffic, but of course with it closed, it's much more enjoyable and safer. The road is a dead end of sorts. At the very top, it splits off and loops itself back around. So there is only one way up and one way down. If you walk the top loop twice, the entire trip will be 5.2 miles. If you walk the top loop once, the trip is 4.8 miles. From the start to the top, you climb 800ft in elevation. It's almost exactly 2.5 miles to the top at the loop, so that's 2.5 miles, 800ft elevation increase, dang near going straight up lol. Whether you're walking or jogging, it's definitely a workout. My dogs and I do this trek 1x every single week. It's open from 0630 - 2200 every day. Many Soldiers flood this area and conduct fitness training in the early early mornings during the week. And on the weekends, many fitness seeming persons flood this area as well. It's dog friendly, and they have doggie bags at the entrance. However, there are only about 3 trash cans along the route. Keep that in mind. And please pick up after your dogs

The puppy aka Chico also enjoys going for a walk here. Paul Harvey Park is a smaller sized park nestled in a residential area. A lot of westside parks are in residential areas which is great! There's a walking trail with lots of green grass and trees around. There's also park benches and a pool nearby. I'm not sure if it's still open or not. I don't think I've really seen people using it in all of the years I've come by. This park always looks clean and well maintained. We've seen the maintenance guys cutting the grass and watering it pretty often. There's also a shelter that's used for gatherings. The kiddos also have a small jungle gym there. Overall a nice place and it's also Chico approved!

I totally forgot about the 4th of July parade that goes down Sunland and turns on Mesa!!!! I was stuck! I drove around for an hour trying to find a detour that would bring me up by Whole Foods. In the process, I found a neighborhood swimming pool that was listed on Yelp (Bel Mar Neighborhood Pool), and three parks that were not yet listed on Yelp: Paul Harvey Park, H. T. Ponsford Park and James Schwitters Family Park, all within minutes of each other. Who ever says we do not have grass and trees in El Paso needs to come check out the City of El Paso's great recreational parks and areas. So, yes, I finally did make it to La Madeleine's- I had to take I -10 W and get off at Resslear to get around the parade and found myself by a giant American flag hanging from a crane!!!! Awesome- Happy Birthday America!
