If you're looking to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu inside the loop, this is the place for you. The…read moreatmosphere is warm, welcoming and focused on self improvement in all realms, and has been developed from the top down. When you initially walk in, the first thing you're likely to see if Professor Jonatas's pearly whites, as he welcomes you with a big smile. Jonatas is a rare duality in the world of martial arts--he's an upbeat, positively delightful guy, who also exhibits a truly impressive mastery of the art of jiu-jitsu. Moreover, his encouraging and enthusiastic attitude spreads like wildfire through the students. Upon stepping on the mat, you're likely to be greeted by what seem to be the friendliest martial artists in the city. Make no mistake though, this group trains hard and is devoted to improving themselves. Nevertheless, this school meets all of its students wherever they are, no matter what age, fitness level, or other attributes you may bring. Don't let the inclusion and encouragement fool you as to the level of instruction here, though--while everyone starts somewhere, the jiu jitsu you'll learn over time under Jonatas's tutelage is of an incredibly high level. In fact, Jonatas frequently has other high level instructors and world class competitors come in to teach seminars and specialty classes--from judo black belts to multiple time world champion and Atos founder Andre Galvao, if you're looking to push yourself and evolve to the next level, this is the place for you. The truth is, no words can do justice to the environment that Professor Jonatas has crafted here. What's been built is an incredibly uplifting and encouraging team, that ranges from competitive athletes to martial arts hobbyists that balance training with full time jobs and family obligations. Whoever you are and whatever you may bring to the table, if you're looking to try out jiu-jitsu, I would highly recommend you stop by Atos Jiu Jitsu Houston/Hors Normes. If you do stop by, you're likely to find a challenge to be overcome, a camaraderie with those around you encouraging your improvement and achievement, and ultimately a home away from home.

I started BJJ in January, so I'm pretty new to all of this. What made my experience so special from…read morethe beginning was Professor Ulpiano. He always had a smile, always greeted me warmly, and from day one, I genuinely felt like I belonged. The tagline is "jiu-jitsu for everyone," and he truly lived that out. Sadly, he has passed, and I wanted to leave something here as a testament to who he was as a professor. His passion and dedication always showed. He once said, "The best professor is a professor that's happy to be there," and you felt that every single time he taught. If you're thinking about trying something new or stepping outside your comfort zone, I really do recommend this place. Professor Ulpiano made it more than a gym. He made it a community.

P.S.: I said "let" only because I agreed to get on the mat with him... I didn't "allow" him to get a submission until we had been at it (rolling) for about 20 min... and that was after five min of stretching and ten minutes of informal drills. He finally wore me out toward the end and got his last one (of 3, after I basically gave up, gassed out (yes I need to take better care of myself), but he got the first two righteously.
