I do think the selection has always been great, and I appreciate the emphasis on supporting local work, although that also seems to have changed a bit since the change. It is a pricey location for most things, but I do always enjoy seeing what is in the store, the card selection is consistently excellent, and it is a great place to find a gift!

I really enjoy home decorating, and as a busy full-time working mom, I thought this would be a fun Saturday morning self care activity and hoped to pick up a couple new tips for my holiday decor. I arrived a few minutes early and waited in the cold (in full view of the staff) until they unlocked the door. I was told to put my stuff down and do a little "pre-shop" before they got started. Then the "teacher" basically asked what we (myself and 3 older ladies who came as a group) wanted to learn. I explained why I signed up and she started walking us around the store suggesting items we could buy. I gave her a few minutes, but after a while I explained I wasn't there just to shop, and asked if she would be teaching any design tips. She acted like she had no idea what I was talking about, so I showed her the class description. She was still confused so then she asked another employee to help me, as if I was asking for something special. I finally left because clearly they had no knowledge to share and I had just wasted my precious little free time. Calling this a class is comical. It was a total disappointment!

So if you want to pay $80 for a cotton print tablecloth, in theory you can be helping the world out. Oh, the problems in execution, though. They can't really tell you how much of the money goes back to the native craftspeople, nor much about the sourcing or labor conditions. It's like Fair Trade coffee - you have to take somebody's word for it, and the word is passed along by the telephone game. I'd actually be willing to do this on faith if the crafts and items here were really unique or even to my taste, but they seem a bit mass-produced to me and without the hallmarks of individual craftsmen, so I'm not only not terribly interested in the goods but I'm highly suspicious of the general claims. This may seem a bit scroogey of me, but I think on the whole if I want to stimulate development in the third world I'll extend a microloan over the internet (very direct and very cost-effective) or buy somebody a share of a goat. I would normally just settle on the usual three stars, given my cynical skepticism above, but the hideously steep prices push it from "would go back and check it out occasionally" to "not going to bother" territory.

The stuffed animals are what drew Barbie to the store. You might want to take a beat and check out a more reasonably priced option like Target or TJ Maxx before you drop your hard earned cash here. I'm not going to get into the religious views of this company...let just talk fabric cutting…read morecounter. Not a great selection of fabric to begin with, but whatever, I've found some cool stuff. Rarely is there a staff member in the department...I usually have to ring the bell. Okay, great, they finally show up. Now for those of us here in 2019, we are used to decent technology, including scanners that can read bar codes. Not only does HL not have scanners, they HAND WRITE every single fabric price and amount on a slip. Then calculate each price. So let's go through the process shall we? Employee slowwwwwwly unrolls fabric from bolt, then places it against the ruler repeatedly to make sure not to give even an eighth of an inch more than we asked for! Slowwwwwwly cuts said fabric. Slowwwwwly folds fabric and places into a pile. Slowwwwwwly hand writes amount on slip. Slowwwwwwly folds up bolt and sets aside. Repeat. And don't get me started on when there's a mistake and they have to rewrite the entire slip. I don't know if the employees are not properly trained or just seriously lack customer service skills. They should just stand there and watch while I cut my own fabric; I'd sure as heck get out of there faster! Bottom line - if you have a lot of time to kill, or just really want to torture yourself, grab a few bolts of fabric and have them cut various sizes. You can thank me later.

Not only did Marie answer the phone, but she was incredibly kind and willing to help, even offering to include a sympathy card and personally go out to purchase gift cards from another store to add to the arrangement. This level of customer service and care is truly rare. It's always a bit nerve-wracking giving your credit card information over the phone--especially for a $550 order--but Marie immediately sent me receipts, photos of the floral arrangement, and images of the gift card receipts and activation codes.
