Great little hometown store with odd selections of local products that you might not find elsewhere. The meat quality is superb.

My Experience at SCHNUCKS-Mahomet yesterday:…read more I was in Mahomet yesterday doing some errands for a friend, who needed an item from the grocery store. This was not my first time at the store in Mahomet, but it was the first time in quite a while - in fact, upon walking in, I was quite impressed with the recent remodel. The store looked new and very clean. As you walk in, you immediately hit the produce section. I noticed they had black seedless grapes for $1.99/lb, so I decided to pick up a bag of them. I weighed the bag at the produce counter, and it weighed ~2 lbs., so, by my calculations, my bag would cost ~$4.00. I picked up the items for my friend and continued to the register. I got to the register and the young man scanned and weighed my grapes and said my total was $6.55. I questioned it in my head, but thought maybe the scale was off in the produce section, so I swiped my card - something I wish I hadn't done. The kid handed me my receipt, which I noticed that the grapes weighed 2.19 lbs, but the price was $2.99 - $1 more than the sign said. I explained to the kid that the price was wrong, and he and the bagger both followed me over to the produce section to verify the price I saw. When we confirmed the price, we went back to the register and he tossed my receipt and handed me $0.75. I said that's not right, that he owed me a little over $2 - and he said he did not, and in the commotion the "manager" stepped in. I explained the situation to the "manager" [the quotes are here because the Manager, according to the receipt, was David Bryan, and this was a woman. Now unless this woman was named David, she was not the Manager]. The woman took me over to the front desk, where another young lady was, and started to give me the refund. This young lady was just as confused with basic math, having to pull out a calculator. I just don't understand how these kids can't see that with $1 difference at 2lbs means that you owe back $2. Meanwhile, the "manager" walked over to the produce section to check the price. When she returned, she said I was wrong and the price was $2.99/lb. I told her SHE was wrong and that I would not have picked up the grapes at that price, PLUS the kid that originally rang me up, who has now mysteriously disappeared along with my receipt, had verified the $1.99 price point. She stood her ground and told me I could keep the grapes at the price I was originally rung for, along with a smug "Have a good day." At this point I was pissed. I demanded a refund, then walked out - but then, as I was walking out, I turned around and went back to the produce section. There it was, the $1.99 sign, not once but on 3 rows of black seedless grapes!!! I removed the sign and marched it back up to the counter and showed it to the smug "manager," whom was conversing along with her staff about how crazy I was! I marched up and showed her the sign and said "WHAT DOES THIS SAY???" She said "Where was this?" and marched back over to the produce section. I showed her the area with the signs, but NOT ONCE did she apologize. Not once. She said "we can sell you the grapes for $1.99 - and I just said "Forget it. I don't want the grapes now!" and walked out the door. I will NEVER shop there again.

Even though they're smaller than Meijer and Walmart and Target, I can still find the basic…read morenecessities - bread, milk, cat food, cat litter.. that's important to someone who recently lost a spouse and the primary grocery shopper in a household. Cashiers are always courteous and friendly, service seems to be quick, store always looks clean and well stocked when I'm there. Quiet store.
