Finally, the woman who checked me out could not have been friendlier. She enquired as to where I'm from, if I'm enjoying Edinburgh, and wished me well on my travels. Consequently, you spend 99% of your time inside trying to navigate to the floor where you want to get to as opposed to actually shopping. All I wanted was a dress and yet it took me a good fifteen minutes of wandering around in circles before I finally gave up and asked a sales assistant before I eventually found the womenswear bit. But this brings me to my next grumble: as far as Debenhams go, this one is really small and so there's really not much selection ot choose from.

As I was informed, they're different companies. It's quite a big store so reserve time for browsing :-) oh and you can treat yourself to chocolates when you finally reach the counter (not free though, oh well...)

Thankfully Romanes and Paterson is not like that. Romanes and Paterson has been around since the 1860's, which is a good enough reason alone to support a historic business. The shop stocks cashmere, kilts, woolen goods, tartan gifts, shortbread, Edinburgh Castle Rock and whatever else it is tourists in Scotland like to buy. It really is ideal for tourists coming to Scotland who wish to purchase their souvenirs to take back home. Its much better than all those shops previously mention which just stock complete tat. There is also a cafe in the store which does a good afternoon tea and is waiter service. The only waiter service cafe on Princes Street I'm told, I guess that is probably true in a world full of Costas and Starbucks.

Mrs Smith sells really smart and sophisticated clothes for women. Most of their clothes are 'work' clothes, such as nice trousers and blouses, but there are also plenty of lovely dresses and skirts which are very summery. Mrs Smith is a relatively new addition to the Edinburgh fashion boutique seen as it opened last year. Personal stylists are available which is fantastic as they are able to assist you if you are unsure which colours go or what style of clothes suit your body shape. The clothes in this store are of excellent quality and will last for years, and as a result, they are a wee bit pricey. I've seen this before in other UO stores, but this was extreme. The Staff also seemed to care less that we were in the store. On the plus side, my daughters found a few good deals in the sales racks. Then I asked for the employees name and they rudely responded with " if you saw the person then you should have asked at the time for their name , shouldn't you have? Which I was quite shocked at. so if I got this employees name I would have wrote it on here but unfortunately they were so rude I couldn't even get that!
