I hate to make this review. Every single floor employee was so extremely helpful, reliable, and kind when going to get a new pair of shoes. Management was extremely unhelpful and standoffish both to customers and their own team employees. I've never had that experience at an REI. Cindy, do better girl! The service is top notch. The employees are very knowledgeable and make excellent recommendations. I bought a pair of Merrill hiking shoes and clothes for my trip to Germany. I was very indecisive at first but the salesperson suggested that I walk around the store and mountain to see how they feel. It didn't occur to me, but there's an actual fake mountain to test your footwear on inclines and decline. She told me the more important test is with the decline because with long hikes and improper footwear, you can lose a toenail. Good to know! She also explained REI's lifetime membership program, which includes member-only discounts, 10% annual rewards, certain education and training (which may be free or have a fee), returning and purchasing used product in good condition, and more. REI's lifetime membership has a one time fee of $30! Since I made a purchase, I also received a $30 gift card. So the membership was basically free. If you enjoy outdoor activities, you should definitely stop by REI in Midtown. read more

I have been a LONG long 30 year customer of REI in Minneapolis, Mn and now at the beautiful new airy spotless store in Sarasota. I buy ALL our waterproof/down/ UV resistant / breathable summer and winter clothing and comfort footwear (urban city and rugged outdoors) for the entire family from REI. My Seattle born father climbed the Cascades and Tetons and took us camping hiking canoeing in New York's beautiful Adirondacks each year then cross country to Bryce, Zion, the Tetons, northern rim of the Grand Canyon, Black Hills, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley 60 years ago. I hitchhiked at age 20 with friends from San Francisco to Vancouver with a 70 lb backpack then took the Canadian National train ( now gone) via Jasper all the way to above Detroit. What is especially fabulous about REI's HUGE selection of products ( online) is the top TOP quality of new innovative materials, deep thought/care in manufacture by many of these once tiny companies, and outstanding long long wear and durability. Washing cleaning all these items is easy thanks to their excellent cleaning products. REI, a Co-operative, has not sacrificed resourcing the very best quality they can locate. They have not become a "mass marketer" like once excellent LL Bean. Instead REI relies very heavily upon their hundreds of consumer product reviews ( which I meticulously read before any purchase). REI genuinely LISTENS to their consumer base!! AND! Their online frequent sales, some short unexpected, are legendary! I did 70% of all my Xmas shopping at REI - - great stocking stuffers too. They have all the name brands for these categories which of course comes with the price. The staff is super friendly and extremely knowledgeable. It's a very large store but well organized. This is the ultimate in outdoors stores. It's the Whole Foods of hiking, camping, paddling, cycling, rock climbing, and power bar-ing. They have it all. Florida is flat and warm. But walking through here you can imagine rappeling in the alps, ice climbing in Patagonia, camping in Yellowstone, and fly fishing in Canada. Hiking boots, $140 cork gripped aluminum hiking "sticks", camping gear. They've got you covered. Bike repairs? Check. And Whole Foods is right around the corner. So after you worked up an appetite trekking around the shop you can go over and replenish your food store. This is the life. Tampa had made it. We riiiiiiiiich!!!!! My wife had spoken for years about an outdoor store called REI that Tampa was not privy too. Then, suddenly, we were and I understood what all her hype was about. REI has everything your outdoor self desires. From camping to biking to hiking to water sporting it has it all. I've used REI to get access to gear that previously I had to order online. I've also used it for running things, camping items and even some cooking stuff (check out those Yellowbird sauces by the register). The customer service we experienced was 5 stars and above. I love the super localized touches. I ordered a pair of shoes online after they were closed and the shoes were ready to be picked up first thing in the morning. The staff were polite, kind, and helpful. The shoes were great (though I may have ordered the wrong size) and made the rest of my vacation enjoyable for all the walking we did. The store was well appointed with almost everything someone would need for any kind of outdoor adventure. On a side note, we were in the store when a massive rain storm moved through and the building didn't leak. Unfortunately, other businesses we visited while in the area were not as lucky. read more

I needed new hiking boots not because I hike but because they protect my feet and support my ankle while being comfortable to walk a lot in. I went to a place I had previously bought boots and they didn't have anything that would work due to supply chain issues. Just found out a week or so previous that Tampa got an REI co-op store. Went there. Found boots I love and become a member which has a lot of benefits if into outdoor things. Very glad I looked them up. Their prices were in range with what is normal for the type of boots I bought. They also have specials at times for members and discounts. $30 to join for lifetime and you get a card to come back and spend $30 in the store. read more

At first glance the winter clothes looked to be very expensive but at a closer look the quality justifies the costs. Merino wool base layers, socks and clothing. Is the absolute best wool for winter warmth. Not a cheap material. Lots of running shoes to choice from such as brooks, hooda and On Clouds. Great return policy if your unhappy and knowledgeable staff to answer any questions you may have while there. Ask to sign up for the REI Club. Very nice store but staff not very approachable or helpful. Passed by a multitude of staff who never asked if they could help me. Almost felt as though I wasn't being helped as I was a minority as they had no problem asking/helping other customers. I'm a physician and came on my lunch break. I literally felt invisible. I needed to find a certain size pair of pants. I guess I'll just go online. Very unfortunate experience as I was really looking forward to this store coming to town. read more

While this isn't the largest REI, it is exceptionally well stocked with a variety of outdoor clothing and equipment. Personally, I think this store has better selection than some REIs that are two are three times larger. Parking in the lot is a bit limited but there is a parking garage across the street that has designated REI customer parking. read more

One employee help with buying bike gloves and pants. She new everything you need to know about both. Another women explained all about Gortex coats. It was so helpful. So. I've been a customer/member with REI for over 27 years and have bought tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise from them. I've never had a problem until a couple of weeks ago. Here is what happened. Just over a year and a half ago I got a Dometic fridge at an REI garage sale in Colorado and when I got home it didn't work. It gave me an error code and I contacted REI and Dometic. The manufacturer said REI wasn't supposed to resell these fridges with those error codes and REI had a deal with Dometic to send the bad fridges back. The issue was a bad compressor motor. Once I let REI in Colorado know they had no problem letting me bring it back for a full refund. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. I now live not far from the REI in Tampa so now that's my go to store. I bought a Dometic fridge as a garage sale item but they didn't have any of the power cords with it so I had no way to test it first. When I got it home I got the same error code. I immediately called the store and spoke with the manager and explained what happened. I let him know REI in Colorado and Dometic had me work directly with the person in charge of this issue at Dometic. He was super nice and had no problem with me returning it for a full refund. Here is where the problem is. When I got to the cashier she already knew about the return per the manager. Instead of her just being nice and completing the return she gave me a very hard time and was super snotty to me. She kept saying I was told no refunds on garage sale items and when I kept trying to explain to her what happened she kept saying she's never heard of that issue and all sales are final. She gave me total attitude and was very rude. This is crazy as she makes the same hourly wages whether I returned a product or not. I'm not real happy and at this point not sure if I will stay a member with REI. I would have given 5 stars as they have ALWAYS been amazing but this cashier just put a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Store is very small but selection of specialty items is great. They carry mainly high end stuff so don't expect any deals, and same items can be purchased on Amazon far cheaper. But the stuff they do carry is excellent. Unfortunately I was never once asked if I needed help or offered any assistance even though I looked at bikes, tents, clothes, chairs, pretty much every section. I had my 8 and 4 year olds with me and I'm pretty sure this was the reason. They had a tent on display, several people had gone in it and two teens laid down in it for about 10 minutes. The second I had my kids step in to take a picture I was immediately approached by an employee who said "just so you know, this is a display so nobody is allowed in it". My kids were in no way unruly. I apologized and said that there were others in and out of it before us so I didn't realize it was frowned upon, he responded with "good to know" and walked away. Needless to say I didn't buy anything and will continue shopping online through the excellent REI website. read more
