First day I'm Colorado and I got a very warm greeting from Madison. She was super helpful in getting me clothes and gear I need for my first 14er... which I accomplished the next morning She was very professional, passionate, and positive about helping me find what I need. I have lived in the state a long time, nearly my whole life and have never been to REI until today. Last year i did a couple of online orders with them because my daughter took up climbing and she needed some gear. I opted to become a member for $20 which is lifetime and you get to have a percentage kickback beginning of march each year if you spend money. REI online is pretty nice. You can find anything you could possibly want. If you order over $50 they can direct ship to you at no cost. I only shopped on there a few times last fall. Today was my first visit into the store. They had hand sanitizer outside if you feel like you need it. Curbside pick up spaces. A person at the front door to help point you in the direction you need to go if you are like me and need help. The climbing expert was friendly and answered all the questions i had. I had ordered some climbing shoes online for myself and unfortunately they did not fit. I was taking them into REI to exchange them for something else that did fit. I was grateful that the local store was able to refund verses my having to ship back and get a refund that way. They had quite a variety of climbing shoes in stock. Though not the size of the shoe i wanted. They ended up ordering the new shoe in for me and it is going to be shipped to my house. They had a lot of other climbing supplies as well. (and I am sure many other things) Though climbing was all i looked at. The cashier was friendly and helpful. The store was clean. While i can't afford to shop here on a regular basis. I wish i could lol. Lots of great stuff, for a bit of a spendy price but they will have what you want. Hence the 4. Very disappointed in REI. Purchased a tent online and a day before it was supposed to be delivered the order was cancelled. This left me almost no time to try and find a replacement before the family vacation. I was not able to get a replacement in time. I called customer service and they were very cold and unhelpful with the situation. Sadly I probably won't be buying from REI anymore. read more

I stopped by REI yesterday to get a bike thing taken care of at their bike shop. They did a terrific job. My bike is like new now. Maddy and Cam helped me out. Their customer service was amazing. Its because of people like them, we still end up going to stores like REI as opposed to buying everything online (which you can do here too). The perks of being a member are just unbelievable. Its surprising and mind-blowing if people are NOT a member yet. I love our local store thanks to Maddy and Cam. read more

REI used to be an awesome store about 8 or 10 years ago. The Ft Collins store now, is absolute garbage, they pretty much carry clothes and backpacks, and some if their own brand of mtn bikes. Rarely anything useful in stock now. When I asked about a specific tent, the employee responded, "well we can order it"..well no shit, I can order it myself. I absolutely can't stand this store anymore, based on several similar experiences here. I'm not going back, if you want an outdoor store with a lot of items in store, don't bother wasting your time at REI. read more

I dislike writing bad reviews, but I was left with no choice today. I drove past 2 other bike shops to purchase a Continental Gatorskin Hardshell 700x25 road bike tire at the Fort Collins REI (where I have been a member for around 30 years). The price was listed as $57.95 (photo attached). At checkout I was told the tire was $77.xx after tax. I notified the checkout clerk of the price on the rack and then consulted a sales associate in the bike area. He checked the price and said the $77.xx was the "right" price and that the currently advertised price was from a sale a couple of weeks ago. They did not honor the $57.95 price and I left the store without the tire. This is the second time in two trips to this store that the price of the item I wanted to purchase was wrong (but the last time they honored the advertised price). read more

Received used glasses when I ordered BRAND NEW! I ordered a brand new pair of these Zeal Radium sun glasses( paid full price and was advertised as new). I received a pair of used glasses in the mail( glasses had finger prints on lenses and dirt specs all over, clearly worn). When I returned glasses to the store they literally packaged the exact glasses I returned and sent them back to me as my replacement "new" glasses. I verified a few different ways that this was the case. Being that finger prints that were on the first pair I returned were in the same exact spot as the second pair I received, as well as the shipping invoice said it was shipped from the store I had just returned to two days prior to receiving the second pair. When calling REI customer support I was told that there is no way for REI to assure glasses are new from the warehouse versus a floor model from a store. When I tried to exchange the first time the cashier tried to exchange with a floor model and said they were new. When I asked further she said "Oh yeah, my glasses guy said they were good and they've probably just been tried on a few times" she didn't even offer me a discount on those until I asked if they were a used floor model pair. To top off my grand experience, I was contacted by a manager who questioned me and told me it was my opinion that the glasses I received were used. I've never in my life been questioned by a store manager and made to feel wrong merely for asking to receive what I'm paying for. All in all if you're expecting to receive a new pair of sunglasses when purchasing from REI, good luck. read more

Today, actually just minutes ago--yes I'm that mad-- I'm infuriated. I'm never infuriated. I speed to REI (some people have to work 9-5 so it's not exactly easy to make a garage sale) and am there for 10 minutes looking for misc. items. My brother is looking for climbing shoes. 1. The guy didn't bother telling my brother about where the hell the garage sale was in the first place. So he basically wasted what was left of the sale. 2. We finally figure it out. Are looking outside at the small crap selection of climbing shoes. Within two minutes the employee is hassling us to leave. Rudely. First she was on the phone with a friend--was I inconvenient to your drinking plans tonight? Then she comes out and tells us to leave as we're trying on shoes. So much attitude. So much. They weren't even closing for another hour--go start cleaning or something instead of acting like gestapo. 3. I ask a guy inside for help. He raises his eyebrows at me and keeps walking. So not at home here. I'm from Chicago. Never had a problem at REI. Not a single complaint. This place honestly sucked. First time here. So my brother has crappy climbing shoes he barely had time to examine and I'm so annoyed that our friend George just wrote a song about the woman working the garage sale. If you buy stuff at REI and spend more than $10 per trip/month/annually, you'd be stupid not to buy the Co-Op Membership. We're talking dividends people. They send you a percentage back each year of what you spend. Kayaks, trips, shoes, carabiners - you get a bit back. They may catalog you to death (which if you want to save a tree or two, you can opt-out of) but their returns policy is second to none. The staff here are cool and use the gear they sell - except for anything with the Novara label. Don't buy it - Novara is crap. Everything else is good stuff. The Denver flagship is amazing, Seattle's is epic, but our little 'ol Ft. Collins store is still cool though. read more

This REI is considerably smaller than the Denver flagship store or the renovated and expanded Boulder store, but still stocks much of what a weekend warrior, hiker, or camper might need. When you walk in, the basic layout is much like any other REI store - I guess they've become just like Target or Sports Authority, in having a standard store layout. I went in during my lunch hour to check out the current Snowsports sale, but the selection at this location was a little lite - I didn't notice downhill skis or boards, if they carried them, and the leftover hat and gloves selection was weak. Otherwise, the 30% off Burton, TNF and Marmot snow jackets and pants weren't really going like hotcakes, not in this economy! Also oddly, they had these red "Clearance" signs at some locations, but not necessarily any marked-down merchandise under the sign... It was dead in there at 1pm, so if you like to shop with more staff in the store than customers, go in the early afternoon! Located adjacent to a Barnes & Noble, if you like to read the latest magazines for free, or grab an evil Starbucks, and then stroll one store further to the south and check out the low quality but cheap goods at Old Navy! read more

The short, black-haired, middle-aged manager is ridiculous, lacking in customer service skills. I bought a can of isopro fuel that leaked from the base of the stove when I first screwed it on. I tried it on the old partially-filled can and it was fine, so not an issue with the stove o-rings. Returned it to REI and had the manager act like he didn't believe me. I still returned it after dealing with his passive-aggressiveness. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I double-checked the stove when I got home to make sure I was not wrong. It worked fine on a new can. You are better off going to Jax if you have to deal with this guy at the Fort Collins REI. read more

I've shopped at this REI off and on for nearly 15 years and it has always been a good to great experience. It's not nearly as large as some other stores, but they always have the gear I need and the staff has been top notch. Don't forget, even if they don't have it in stock they can check the database and bring items in from the other stores quite quickly! 4 Stars! read more

I went to the REI in Greenwood Village in Denver, CO, (near the Denver Tech Center just off of I-25), and I had a really great experience here. I went to find a better backpack because the one I got at the other REI store a couple days ago was not big enough to accommodate my needs and it was putting too much strain on my shoulders. Thankfully they are great about letting you return a product that didn't fit your needs. The employee Dave at this location helped me pick out a few backpacks and was very knowledgeable about the features of each. Not only did he help me select a few, but he stuck around and talked to me about my individual needs as I loaded up the packs to see how my things would fit. When I was focused on exploring the different pockets and seeing how to pack my items in, he helped out other customers, but he always came right back to check in and make sure I was doing alright and to see if I had any other questions or needed any more help. I felt like I was treated to a very good custom experience where this employee really valued me getting exactly what I needed. He was very patient and helpful the whole time through, and his friendly attitude made me feel comfortable asking all of my questions. To top it all off, once I had the right backpack, he did me the favor of taking my old backpack I was exchanging up to the register so that I wouldn't have to carry it around while I finished the rest of my shopping, and he let them know that I would be coming up shortly to do the exchange and buy a few more things. I am very satisfied with my purchase and so excited to try out my new Osprey Farpoint on my trip to Asia! If you get the pleasure of coming in to this store, you can expect some very good customer service, a huge selection and helpful, knowledgeable employees who will help you feel confident that you are making the best decision! :) read more

DO NOT SHOP AT THIS STORE!!!!! (Ft. Collins, CO) I purchased a pair of K2 snowboard boots, that fell apart the first day. The day manager was on a little power trip and refused to exchange or return the item. He was rude, not at all helpful, and blamed me for the boots falling apart! If you want quality products and service, I would look elsewhere. I also purchased a snowboard from this same store. The rep that was helping me told me that he had ridden the Jones Explorer and loved the board because it had "no camber". The board is clearly a hybrid camber board, and says so on the back of all the new ones. The rep obviously did not know what he was talking about. i live very close to this location so that's a big +. sure, its not the Denver store, but if you're not in a rush, they can ge the product. My only issue is how up and down the customer service is. its really a 50/50 chance that i'll have a great experience, like today where they went above and beyond, and other days where when i walk in, its like the sales associates catch my eye and then try to disappear. i always have this experience in the shoes when Kumar is working. this is so infuriating that i quit going there for shoes, even though i'm a co-op member. otherwise, i would write that i'm a huge fan of the store. GiGi was super helpful in the past, and today, Bryan saved my butt. i'm grateful that i have such a store so nearby, however i'm a bit bummed to go in and be ignored (or ran away from!) and i have to go to JAX up the road for outfitting my family in shoes. read more

One of the smaller REI stores you'll find, especially considering you're in Colorado. Limited selection means pretty limited options for finding the gear you need. I would have to agree with the other reviews. Seems like this place has a problem with selection. Went in looking for a better sleeping bag for the upcoming camping season and notcied that they stock only a few high end bags. Almost none compaired to their website. I love REI but I am an instant gratification kinda girl and I really wanted to purchase the bag in the store. I will say the staff at this location is very knowlegeable of the local outdoors. Got lots of good advice for camping and backpacking. Unfortunately they didnt stock half of what I needed to make those trips happen. read more

They had a sale this weekend with a bunch of biking gear out front. Cool idea, but it just creates a mess for parking and getting around in the parking lot. Edward was especially great at listening to our odd and extensive specifications. He showed us many great options and gave us a much better idea of the liter-age we were looking at. This review is for their ski shop/ski tuning service. I took 4 pairs of alpine skis in to have bindings tested (one was also a remount). I assume they did that right, but they systematically scratched the bases on all 4 sets of skis. Minor scratching to be sure, but having had skis tuned and worked on for 35 years -- I've never had this happen before. Two were brand new skis, the other two had already been ground and ptexed elsewhere -- and the systematic scratching was proof positive that they caused the damage (including a round two inch diameter impression under the rear binding. I didn't notice until I got home (had picked the skis up, paid and ran home without looking at the bases -- why would I?). DO NOT use their ski shop. Otherwise, I've had good luck at this REI but I wouldn't not touch them for technical services on skis or bikes (same personnel). read more

I had a very Poor experience last night while shopping with my girlfriend for a new winter coat. we were being watched the entire time by the staff as if we were thieves. I would glance over and see a staff member looking directly at us around a corner , once I made eye contact with them they would quickly turn the other way , This happened about 5 times during the very short shopping experience. My girlfriend said the same happened to her while she was in the other section of the very small store. I felt very uncomfortable while shopping and we very quickly left. As we approached the exit an older woman ( employee) that had been watching us the whole time just walked right in front of us at the exit cutting us off, No "excuse me" or anything .... Once in the car we both talked about how the employees were watching us and making the experience very awkward and how uncomfortable the experience was for both of us. I felt very judged while in the store and will most likely never shop at REI again. We found the perfect coat at sheels in Loveland and couldn't be happier with the excellent shopping experience/staff there ! read more

I've had my bindings mounted to my skis before the season at this store and was looking forward to a great skiing season. Boy was I wrong. While on vacation at Crested Butte, my ski bindings started to separate from my skis, which can be extremely dangerous. I brought my skis to Christy Sports at CB and was told that my bindings were incorrectly mounted and weren't flush with my skis. I was forced to rent skis, which REI did reimburse me for. When I brought my skis into the store, the "tech" automatically went to blaming Marker and K2. After a week with my skis, and a lost ski weekend, my skis weren't even touched by the tech and I was told to take them back to where I purchased them (now I hope I can find my receipt somewhere). I didn't even get a refund for the binding mount that they messed up. Now I'm stuck with a new pair of useless skis that can't be used and I'm supposed to hope that Sports Authority will accept the return. Unless you want your gear ruined take them to a real ski shop for any work. read more
