REI is a great place to go for most things outdoors. If you are unfamiliar with the premise behind how this store operates you need to read this. Yes, REI is a big box retailer, but they lay down community roots where ever they are. There are free educational classes from bike care, triathlons, hiking, backpacking and more. I have attended several classes and in full disclosure volunteered to lead a class as well. Don't stop reading because that is not the best part. The return policy is by far the most fantastic policy you will ever encounter. For one low price (I think it is $29) you can become a member. This entitles you to 10% store credit return on purchases mailed to you every year as well as a no receipt return policy. Everything you buy is in the computer and shared company wide. Buy a pair of shoes in CA and need to return them in RI no problem. Say the shoes are muddy and worn, no problem. They have a no hassle return. If you are dissatisfied with a product no matter how long you have owned it simply bring it in for full credit. This may seem like a waste for everyone, but then members also have access to the garage sale were you can purchase the returned gear. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and I find will help you find whatever you are searching for. As far as the prices go they are in line with or below the costs you would expect for the quality and service you receive. Great job REI! read more

Very cool store for outdoorsy types. Lots of biking,hiking,running type stuff. They offer a membership for around $20 I think and they get special perks like discounts and special members only sales where you can by used gear for cheap. You also get a percentage back at the end of the year for whatever you spent in the store so it's like getting a bonus gift card. Kind of cool. Check it out. read more

This place is still awesome. I've been back several times since my first review and have always had a great experience (very, very nice staff). I've gotten socks, hiking shoes, bug spray, a pair of sunglasses and a piece of clothing here and there. The clothing is really high quality and but costs more than I tend to spring for unless there's a good sale or I really need something that's going to last/stand up to the elements (i.e. Arcteryx, North Face, Patagonia, Kuhl, REI's house brand, Smartwool). read more

Kindof surprised I have not reviewed this spot yet seeing as I frequent it more than other stores. It's my go to for shoes especially. They have a wonderful selection of Merrels, Asolo, Chaco and more. For clothes I love their Prana selection. I like their other brands too like Kuhl and Lucy but they are a wee too pricey for me at this point in my journey. They often have some wonderful deals on clearance and the quality of everything is top notch and everything in the store lasts so long. My husband has purchased a lot of outdoorsy gear from biking to skiing stuff and loves it all. I go there more for shoes and clothes myself and I am never disapointed. For jackets they carry Marmot and Patagonia; the best. Love this store. If you pay $20 for a yearly membership you get even more deals and discounts! Love this store! read more

My experience at REI last night was nothing less than amazing. Dave was extremely passionate and helpful and I'm so happy my husband and I met him last night. As an entry level biker, I feel so much more educated about bikes and what I'm looking for. Today I will be heading back to REI to make my investment. read more

This is certainly a very nice looking place and the employees are very friendly and helpful BUT the I do think this place is overpriced.

I am pleased we have one of these so close. Anytime I need something for a camping trip, I can find it here. There membership club is a good deal too. I also come here for gifts when I want something a little different for someone. The staff are normally helpful and friendly. read more

REI is a great store for all of you outdoorsy types. I am standing in line for their. Semi annual yard sale as I type this review. This is one of the only lines I will wait in at a store. The deals are unbelievable, literally pennies on the dollar. Definitely recommend this store. Full prices can be high, but there are enough clearances and sales to make it affordable enough. This store warranted my first review: Been to REI's in over a dozen states. This one is typical of what you'd expect being in a pretentious area of minimal outdoor activity. One whole floor for cycling, and the rest of the store is packed with non-functional trendy clothing. There's a corner with basic camping gear peppered in. I feel sorry for all the people who have only shopped at this location and think it's great. Maybe compared to the Zero other choices in Rhode Island for gear. Definitely not compared to other REI's. The employees are about as enthusiastic about outdoor life as you'd imagine someone who lives in a flat, freezing state would be. I went for an insulated Arctyrex winter jacket, an appropriate item for my first winter in New England. The jacket selection was a joke. I had spent days researching jackets before I went in and am pretty familiar with what's available. They didn't have 1 serious contender for the local climate. Total lack of technical down jackets. Just fashion coats, which sadly seem to be appropriate for the local demand. When I tried to order and pay for the jacket that REI carries at other locations, I was dealt with in a manner which was obvious to me, that this type of situation was not common there. The employees seemed confused as to why I wanted to get the gear sent from one store to the store in order to test it out instead of just going home and ordering it online. I was under the impression REI is an outfitter of outdoor gear and that was there whole purpose. A gear store should carry gear that's appropriate for the conditions outside. This is not an outdoor culture here, and the effect that has on the genuineness of this store is obvious. Even as I'm writing this, I want to go back to REI to order the jacket out of respect for all the awesome REI staff I've met out in the mountains who are about this life. It was a disheartening experience in total, and hopefully this isn't a show of what's to come with REI's Devolving standards. read more

Great customer service at this store. I went in to buy a bike and the guy who helped me out asked me a few questions about what I like to do, then helped me narrow it down to two bikes. It was also pretty cool they allow you to do a test ride outside of the store. The second time I went there, another great guy approached me and was very knowledgeable and helped me find what I was looking for. The only thing I didn't like was how expensive it was. Then one of the staff members told me if I tried out something and it didn't work for me (whatever the time limit) I could return it. Knowing that made me more comfortable with my purchases. read more

Went to one of "yard sale" events last weekend; the one's where you need to have a special membership card to get invited- this card costing 2o bucks- anyway....I don't really need to spend my weekends getting trampled by uppity white folks, scrambling over each-other trying to reach that last pair of USED sneakers or a BROKEN watch! I don't care how much a "discount" these items were, as marked down from the original over-inflated prices. The fact is, in this day and age I can't imagine how stores like this stay in business. There is NOTHING in that store that the savvy shopper couldn't find online at a Fraction of the cost. I guess what you're paying for is the "experience", it must make one feel all sorts of 'fancy' to spend copious amounts of money in places like that. Bragging rights at the water cooler, or at Conner's play date- or wherever yuppies congregate nowadays. The only redeeming value I can see here is that the staff seems quite knowledgeable about the products. No thanks. I'll go to the library and read up on kayaks rather than paying extra for your retail kernels of wisdom. read more

I love this REI. I went in tonight to pick up a pack for my AT thru hike. I was helped by a very nice guy, Kerry. He was knowledgable and patient while I spent over an hour trying to decide what I wanted. He was very nice and never put any pressure to decide tonight. I ended up not buying, because the color I wanted wasn't in stock and I still wanted to think. If you're looking for someone to help you in the packs section, look for Kerry. He's awesome! read more

Much pricier than the average sporting goods store. The staff is always very helpful, especially the folks in the bike department. I have bought 2 bikes here in the last 5 years and I will always bring the bikes in for the annual tune-ups. They know what they are doing, very knowledgeable. read more

The good thing is that they have nearly everything you might want for action sports. Their prices are fair. the store is big open but it is a bit hard to find what you want without asking for help. Everyone tries to push you to sign up as a co-op member (REI is a co-op) constantly which gets a bit annoying the 4th time some squeezes you to sign up. That being said, the service worked very well and the sales people knew their equipment. If you don't want to join the co-op, say NOT INTERESTED quickly and firmly or they will go on and on with pressure. read more

I absolutely LOVE this store; I could spend whole paychecks here with ease. There are only two glaring issues I have with it. One is that the prices can sometimes be astronomically higher than online, and two is that the staff NEVER leaves you alone; they constantly ask if you need help and even if you say no they keep talking to you - Just leave me alone for cripes sake... if I need help with something I'll ask. read more
