So I took my bike to REI to get it fixed. I'm picking it up right now. Of course it's the one time the bike desk is busy but I was first. First I see the kickstand isn't fixed. "I'll have the technician look". Then the bill for $211 rang up as $279. "It says before tax". I shot that down quick. Cue a manager to appear. She fixes the price. Collects payment. "Our tech is on his lunch break". "I'll wait and test out the bike". 13 minutes in and it doesn't shift to 6, and the seat keeps tilting to become unrideable. Crappy service not done correct or complete and overpriced on top. Big avoid!!!! Waiting to go back inside in 10 minutes but I drive 30 minutes each way, wanted to go biking today; the job isn't even done. Smh! Edit: Technician came in and was great helped me right away after his break & fixed all the issues in under 5 minutes. Next to the front door there were two big camping tents taunted me to crawl inside but a sign prohibited entry - it would have been a great pic. The huge paddle boards and kayaks seem to look much bigger in person. They offer a good selection of running sneakers and I had the staff find me a decent pair and he told me they run a half size small and he was correct. They fit great but at $160 it was iffy. We Experience some of the best customer service that we've had in a very long time. Colleen was so friendly and relatable. She went above and beyond to introduce us to the travel systems which REI sells, and to look into which would be best for our journey. She was incredibly well informed and has done similar trips. We definitely felt like we were in good hands. No question was too much or too silly. I recently got a flat tire on my bike. I was getting ready to go for a 10 mile ride but as I went to top off the air, I discovered my tire was completely flat. Unfortunately for me the place where I bought the bike (where I have a lifetime flat fix deal) was closed. I didn't really want to give up my ride for the day so I looked at other options in the area. Surprisingly the only one that was open at 6pm was REI. I stopped by and they got it fixed in no time. Apparently there was a tiny shard of glass that punctured the inner tube and the tire so they sorted it out and got me back on the road quickly. The staff was very friendly and the price was OK. I would definitely not hesitate to come back and get a tire fixed in the future. Maybe even a maintenence service. read more

If you're looking for yoga/running clothes this is a good spot because their selection is large (check the sale racks!), but this location isn't as big as others I've been to, so it may not meet your needs for all of the specialty gear. Regardless, this is the kind of store I could spend hours in just checking out ropes and things that I will never actually need. I've tried on some shoes here and am always thankful for the helpful staff. Expect to wait a bit if the shoe section is busy, but they really help you find the right pair for your needs. Our first time. Overpriced, The quality/price ratio is much higher at Peter Glenn or Dick's. Nothing to do with the store but, the customers need a course in civility. Maybe it's West Boca but the aura of entitlement is all over the place. It will affect you as they will stand in front of you to use the mirror you're using. Reach across you and drag clothes off the rack and across your arms. Talk to the employees as if they were indentured servants. I felt sorry for the staff. i stopped into REI this morning with my daughter and it was a great visit. She had been talking about getting some new bouldering footwear as her current ones were petty worn. There was a hole in the left and right. we arrived about 10 after 10, the open time. We knew something was up as we walked up and a dozen people were standing around. They opened a little late but it was nice to walk into a uncrowded store. I was checking out kayaks for a bit, just for fun. REI really is a wonderland of items if you are a outdoors adventurous type. I got out of that section soon enough before I spent silly money on something. The camping area had a lot of cutting edge fun stuff too but I made it out of there ok too. I found my daughter in the climbing area. There was a gal helping her that definitely knew her stuff. I was a little surprised how well she knew climbing, I wouldn't think that was mandatory for the position. With her guidance we had it narrowed down to 2 sets a shoes and then made a good call on a pair. They were a little pricier than we planned on but they were very good quality. What a cool freaking store! Screw Dicks (slaps knee) and any other sports store! They finally opened a store that has ACTUAL traveling needs such as gear, equipment, and clothing, for your potential trip you have planned in the near future. I have an upcoming trip for Las Vegas, and decided to spend it doing the total opposite of lounging at the pool, or playing the slots, tipping at the local strip club, stuffing my face at one of the many all you can eat buffets....NOPE....(okay well, don't count me out for those things...will just be done at night)....my wild ass is going hiking! Upon my search for hiking shoes, I was coming up short, since I leave in 1 day, Amazon wasn't an option, and Dicks selection was slim, not to mention hiking shoes foot a hefty bill (pun intended?) especially since I don't know how often I'll be hiking, probably not as much as I would like, because I live in Florida, so I mean LOL. Then I remembered that this store existed and I never really explored it. So I purchased some shoes online that I got at a ridiculous price...$44, discounted for $150! Was able to pick them up this afternoon...win, win. Hit up the store and it was SO COOL. Picked up my shoes and went to check out the rest of the store. Ended up getting some energy gels, a backpack, and a UV face bluff. Listen I'm not going to lie it's a bit pricey. But if you search for the deals and you're not necessarily picky, there's a chance you can hit gold like I did. In 1935 Seattle natives Lloyd and Anderson realized they needed a better way to purchase outdoor gear. REI was started with the search for an ice axe. Where the Anderson's lived, in order to purchase an ice axe they had to use a middle man who charged an inflated prices for fake Austrian gear. The Andersons put their thinking caps on and decided to make use of Mary's ability to speak German. They decided to go straight to the axe source in Austria where they were able to purchase a high quality Akadem Pickel ice axe for only $3.50!. Members of their Mountaineers group wanted in on the action. With more buying power they were able to purchase even more gear at lower prices and in this way they established a co-op. In 1938 the co-op was officially formed and the 21 people who wanted to join were charged a $1 lifetime membership fee. On November 30, 1938, the Andersons put out a bulletin that read "Intent of the founders of this organization was to secure sufficient membership to make group buying possible; to distribute the goods with as little overheads expense as possible, using membership cooperation with the work as much as possible; to gradually build up a reserve for purchasing stock; to have the membership fee ($1.00) so that everyone interested will be financially able to join." The first retail shop was a shelf in a grocery store. In 1942 the Anderson's moved to a new room down the hall from The Mountaineers club. Jim Whittaker, the first American to summit Mount Everest in 1963 was their first employee. In the 1970's they only sold gear for experienced climbers, backpackers, and mountaineering expeditions. In the 1980's they branched out to other outdoor sports like camping and cycling. So much fun stuff to browse! REI Boca Raton plans to offer a wide range of programs to connect people to a life outdoors. In 2019, REI donated over $140,000 to local outdoor nonprofits in Florida including funds for The Miami Foundation, Florida Trail Association and the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association of Florida. The young woman took her time to find out what we wanted and showed us several different types of shoes for my up and coming adventure. She took the time to get the details and listen to us. In preparation for an upcoming trip to a cold climate, a good amount of outdoor wear that we needed was listed at REI. We loved the look and feel of the store as soon as we stepped in. Everything is stocked and organized based on activity, which made it relatively easy to find the things we needed. While browsing, staff was friendly and we were asked if we needed help a few times. When we did have questions, Brad found what we needed, made recommendations, and checked back in to make sure everything was going well. We found most of what we needed at prices comparable to online. But nothing beats being in-store and the ability to touch and try on. Loved it so much that we signed up for the lifetime membership at the register. We are researching Oru kayaks, and discovered they have one on display at this REI about an hour from our house. So we drove here. We found the Oru, but it's sitting where it would be for display, but it's in its box sealed up. There were several employees hanging around, but they were all talking with each other... one batch complaining right next to me about their boss. But. None offered to help us. I called after one employee walking by, and he paused... I said "we're really interested in this Oru kayak. Is this one supposed to be assembled on display like these other kayaks?" He said it was. I explained that we drove a way to see this, no volunteered my wife and I to unbox and assemble the kayak for them. He indicated that was possible, and said he'd be right back. That was the last we saw of him. My wife went to look around the rest of the store while I waited for him to return, by the box. During over half an hour several other employees came by sorting clothes and stocking shelves, but none acknowledged me. I waved to an employee by a nearby register and he made eye contact with me but turned and walked away. By the time my wife came back, we stood by the kayak box for a few more minutes, looked around the store for the employee we were waiting for, and simply gave up and walked out. I imagine Oru would be pretty unhappy that their flagship kayak is sitting unassembled. We left this REI pretty unhappy. read more

I've been in here twice and both times I haven't been helped, instead pushed away. The first time I was in the store, I was looking for help. No one acknowledged me, said hi, or asked if I needed help. I went upstairs to check the upstairs out and instead a bald gentlemen told me I couldn't be upstairs. There was no hi, how are you? May I help you with your visit. Nothing. Today, I gave the store a second chance. I came in with my six year old child. We came to explore bike options. There were several other children testing the bikes inside and outside the store. The same bald gentlemen approached me and said my child can't ride inside the store. And clapped his hands front and back in a swinging motion. I knowledge why he said what he said. From the retail perspective it's for the safety of everyone and that's why I was right next to my child slowly testing the bike. It all in the approach and wording. This negatively prompted my leave. I went back inside to speak to him about his approach but couldn't find him. So came to leave my opinion and experience here instead. I think both times the situation could have been handled differently. As a customer service orientated individual who has previously worked in retail. The first incident should have been acknowledging my visit to the store, asking if I needed help, and later explaining the section was closed off. The second visit, instead of saying no riding inside. He could of explained that the store allows for customers to test drive the bikes outside the store. There was no sense in driving a bike sale. And no customer service injected into his approach. I didn't even know customers could ride outside to test the bike. I saw other mothers with their kids test driving outside, as I walked away from the store scolded. It's disappointing and I'm hurt by the lack of customer service and human respect from the gentleman. read more

However, the prices on most of the items are outrageous considering some of their products !!! The store feels giant when you enter, but always empty . . . This place is by far the coolest! If your into trails, hiking, biking, pad boarding, rock climbing, and the like , you have to visit this place! There was not one thing I didn't love about this store. More especially they're map displays and gear for hiking! Rare you can find so much for us wanderers. I also love they're footwear. Both my husband and I walked out of here with excellent quality hiking boots for rough and rugged terrain. We were so pumped to hike and start to wearing process. They had a irresistible sticker display that made me want all of the stickers, however I only chose 3. And they also have a really great membership, that lets you walk away lifetime guarantee and with a $20 gift card! I also really enjoyed time spent in their book area. There was enough chairs to rest up, take a seat, and discern what exactly your looking for. The staffing were great, we enjoyed the help of the footwear department, they were both knowledgeable and pleasant. The cashier in my opinion didn't seem happy to be there (there could be a number of reasons naturally) but aside from that it was a great experience and we will definitely be back for more gear as the adventures continue! May 13, 2024, Kassie who worked the Shoe Department today was WONDERFUL, she was so knowledgeable about all types of shoes, and very helpful. We ended up buying a pair of women Brooks sneakers. Unfortunately, Glen the cashier was quite disappointing as he lacked the expected friendliness that should be given to the customer. Looks like it belongs more in the Midwest somewhere as opposed to West Boca, but I would recommend it if you need something for skiing or rock climbing and quite honestly everything outdoors. I'd had a baggie of stuff to return to the Orlando shop the next time I made the trip but now I don't need to do that. Thank you REI! In any case, great return policy, always the best staff - knowledgeable, friendly and not overbearing. The management does a fantastic job with training, and they always have people who are truly into the outdoors so it's a very authentic experience talking to the staff about products and how/where to use them. I found out about some trails in Boca I had no idea existed! They treat their people well, their customers even better and the planet with respect.
