Have been under the care of Reggie for many years after going through a number of other hair stylists in New York City. Reggie is not only a brilliant, creative stylist but truly a hair guru. The health of your hair is a top priority for him, which I appreciate. I have had a number of hair styles over the years with him (long, short, sew-ins), had hair coloring and now growing out hair color for a more natural (grey streaks) look. At each step of my hair journey, Reggie has taken excellent care of me. He is also a consumate professional. It is rare that I have to wait a long time while he finishes up a previous client. Reggie has a new life customer - me! The service was amazing; my hair looks great; and the place is very inviting. I have been looking for a salon that's convenient and where I could get an amazing short hair cut. Also I needed a place that was very professional. Other salons I've been to made it hard for me to plan my day. You would make an appointment for 4 p.m. and may not get out until maybe 7 hours later!!! Unacceptable. This review has been a long time coming and can be summed up in one sentence... Reggie is absolutely amazing. I found his salon on yelp while packing up to move from the West Coast to NYC last year and I must say I've never felt so fortunate to find such a great and fun hair stylist on my first try. Outside of exceptional experience and continuous creativity, I think what sets him apart from many other stylists is that he's not just interested in making you look gorgeous when you leave the salon, he's interested in your entire hair journey-short to long, damaged to healthy, dark to light,.., whatever you're interested in he's dedicated to making that process a reality in the most healthy, fashionable, and comfortable way possible. I recently transitioned from mid-length to a short cut and I'm so happy with it-the cut is easy to maintain, healthy, and always fashionable-messy, styled, after the gym, etc., the compliments haven't stopped :) This salon is definitely my happy place. It's clean, cozy, modern, and professional with great music and no over-booking/waiting around for service. You get his and his assistant Whitney's entire attention. To add to the comfortable feeling of the salon, you're also offered complimentary treats, wines, and mimosas during your service....in addition to the usual water and tea (classy lushes like myself don't pay much attention to the latter options ;-) ). **Disclaimer: I am giving this spot 4 stars since this was my first visit. I will post an update (and hopefully give it 5 stars) after a few more visits. Her warm personality and professionalism instantly puts you at ease. She was constantly in motion - offering to help clients and Sidney in any way that she could (e.g. offering water with lemon or a glass of wine upon checking clients in, sweeping Sidney's station for her so things were neat and clean etc...). Sidney (stylist) - amazing! I have been desperately hunting for a stylist that is the total package: professional, can cut & (most importantly) style, ANNNNNNDDDDD is full of tips for growing & maintaining healthy hair. The Result: A VERY happy me leaving with "Street-Ready" hair!! After doing a quick assessment/consultation, Sidney recommended adding layers to give my hair more volume & movement. I was definitely open to her suggestions because I wanted to test out her skills and see what she could do - I am glad I did! I have a fab new hairstyle & am beyond thrilled that (for the first time in what feels like forever) I actually left a salon with hair that did not require me to go home & work on/restyle myself! I'm not sure what it is about salons in New York City - their front desk skills are seriously lacking across the board. I tried to make an appointment here twice. I wanted a colour rinse and was told that I would need to come in for a consultation - which is totally fine. I requested to make the actual colour appointment at the same time for a later date so I could have it in my schedule since I travel a lot and need to book in advance. That apparently was a very complicated request because 'Reggie' would be away. I asked if 'Reggie' was the only person who did colour and got put on hold. Then they hung up on me. I tried to call back and got vmail so left a vmail to call be me back and never heard anything. I don't see what is so hard about making an appointment? If the consultation didn't go well - the appointment was well enough in advance that it could have been cancelled. Is there some magic trick to booking appointments in Manhattan that I haven't learned yet? read more

A long overdue review and first yelp post. The HairLounge is great experience from start to finish. The staff is professional and Reggie is a master of perfection. I am customer for life. This review is for my first install. I decided to get a full install but was initially concerned if the install would look natural. I watched Reggie do a full install on a few clients. He walked me through the entire process and put my concerns at ease. I am EXTREMELY happy with my install. My hair looks absolutely amazing (gone with the wind fabulous) and natural. I can't speak highly enough of this salon. I'm a student that's been in New York for 3 years and haven't found a stylist that I trust. After several bad experiences, I gave up and only got touch-ups when I went home to Chicago during school breaks. Well this time around, I couldn't wait any longer and I once again picked up the search. I stumbled across The HairLounge, so the good reviews, and decided to give it a shot. I'm really glad I did. I called at 10:30 on Wednesday morning, asking for an appt. at 6:30 that night. Shay moved things around and got me in to see Reggie that evening. Disappointed and wish it had worked out better. Let's start with the positives. PROs - I wear hair extensions and was interested in continuing to do so. The salon staff called me to discuss my intentions and schedule a consultation. I need to get my hair done bad, so I was a bit frustrated to do a consultation before getting it done but they seem to care a lot about doing a good job, so I didn't mind the additional appointment. - When I arrived for my appointment the reception staff seem really warm and professional. They let me know Reggie was running behind 10 minutes and when 10 minutes turned 15 minutes, they let Reggie know so I could see him sooner since I only had 30 minutes to spare for the entire consultation. CONs - Like many women, my hair can cause me a great deal of stress. As I have gotten older, I have experienced thinning and stagnant growth in certain parts. In the past, I have appreciated hair dressers who tried to help me overcome this and not make me feel bad about it or jump to an immediate diagnosis without hearing my about my struggle. Reggie was not this type of hair dresser. I found him extremely condensing and a bit rude. Despite asking me about my history, he let me talk for a few seconds and then told me he did not want to hear about it (okay, then why did you ask?). When he asked what type of style I was interested in, I showed him a picture of myself from a few weeks earlier with my hair styled the way I like. His response was to look at a magazine and find style (Ok, so don't focus on looking like yourself, focus on looking like a random girl in a hair magazine, makes sense). Reggie consulted with me for about 5 minutes then seemed bothered that he needed to try to convince me how to wear my hair and returned to waiting on another customer. The consultation cost me $25 and 30 minutes I cannot get back. While, I struggled to understand Reggie's advice, I would have been willing to try the things he recommended if he treated me with a little respect. - The salon pushes full sew-in weave + plus purchasing their hair. If you have any preference for hair vendors or certain textures -I personally like Extensions Plus hair since it matches my texture the best - this is not the place for you. I found the hair they used too silky to match my texture. After seeing it, I better understand why they want you to get a full head of hair, the hair won't match most African American hair textures, so doing the single tracks I prefer, is not an option. I love the premise of a boutique salon that caters to my hair needs but this salon pushes full weave or bust with an unfriendly hair dresser to boot. Thanks but no thanks. read more

The Hair Lounge was a great experience for me and they do black African natural textured hair better than I bet your mother, aunt, or gandma did it. I saw that a majority of the women had long natural hair shoulder to back length, because they had been going to the Lounge for hair care and styles! And you dont have to leave Manhatten. I got my hair done by Tiffany, who is very lively and attentive. She made sure to ask me if she was applying too much pressure to my hair while she washed it! It was so hard for me to find someone who did natural hair in the area for a reasonable price and well. But I'm not saying its cheap, I'm saying you get exactly what you pay for( you know our hair cn be very expensive, so this is a relief) all done professionally and to a T. I have never had such a smooth experience with my natural hair in salons, ever. They even have the option of a moderate price for the basics ( wash blow and style) and then it gets more expensive with all the trimming but you look expensive when you leave. Trust. I am so impressed with my results and the service I recieved from these very experienced and high quality hair stylist. Theyre actually more like natural hair growth and treatment treatment specialist if anything. They SERIOUSLY specialize in black natural hair care. Where do I begin... As a College student, my hair has definitely suffered from all of the stress. I first came into see Reggie after reading an excellent review on Yelp and figured I had to try him out. My hair was in desperate need of some TLC! After one trip to see Reggie, I knew I could never go to another hair salon! My hair came out super soft and after he was done he walked me through the steps to keep up with a healthy hair regiment. I recently went back to Reggie to put in extensions and just like my regular hair, it came out fabulous! The extensions are absolutely incredible!!! I got a full install with straight hair purchased through The Hair Lounge the first time I got my hair done here and all went well. I called recently to schedule an appointment wanting to have a curly wig I purchased sewn in this time around for a different look, and was told to send an email requesting this service because for some reason it's a problem. This has never been a problem with any other salon I've been to. I never got a response. Poor customer service is one of my biggest pet peeves, so I made an appointment somewhere else. Like most people, I have a busy schedule and zero time to wait for someone to email me back about something as simple as scheduling a hair appointment. I've lived in New York for four years and have struggled to find a good hair stylist until now. I've been a client of Tiffany's since October 2014 and couldn't be happier. She is knowledgable and friendly without be pushy or annoying like some stylist I've dealt with in the past. I usually get my hair relaxed but Tiffany has also done texturizers and blow outs for me. I'm always very satisfied with the results! In January I asked her to cut my hair into a bob and she SLAYED IT! I got so many compliments and my hair looked super healthy and full. I have been a steady client with the HairLounge for about three years. For financial and personal reasons I was MIA for about 6 months. I made a decision to go natural in January when I noticed that my relaxed hair was breaking & shedding. Afterward I got sick and had to have emergency surgery. I had a fantastic overall experience at The HairLounge today! Tiffany is great, and I can't wait to go back in a couple weeks. I am from Atlanta, but I just started attending NYU. I got a full sew in about two weeks ago at home in Atlanta, and I needed to find someone to maintain it for me while I'm up here at school. I googled around and looked at the reviews and chose to make an appointment here! When I called, Tiffany told me Reggie did not work on Wednesdays but that she would be more than happy to do my hair for me. She was super friendly and accommodating over the phone, so I was feeling confident about this place from the go. I went in today for a shampoo and style. I met Tiffany, and she was the same lovely person I had spoken to over the phone. I'm new to this whole weave thing, so she answered all of my questions along the way. I have been a been a client of Reggie's for over 4yrs. I was referred to him by my sister. I had trouble with excessive breakage/ shedding and my hair would not grow. My hair used to be long and thick but I was experiencing some complications. He had to cut a lot of my hair off and convinced me to try extensions several months later. I have to admit I was skeptical but I noticed that most of his clients had beautiful long hair... It took me awhile to realize that they were all wearing gorgeous extensions. I have been wearing extensions ever since. And every time I have to redo my extensions, I've noticed that my hair has gotten healthier, stronger and longer all thanks to Reggie. I am an executive who has lived in NYC for 8 years now and it has taken me this long to find a salon that is professional, thorough, respectful of the customer, reliable and superb. Reggie and his team are top notch. I waited to write this review until I experienced several visits so it is with much experience that I can say with the highest degree of confidence that this is a top notch salon. When we women go to a salon, we expect to be treated with respect and taken seriously. Most salons in this city treat ladies like crap unless they are the $$$$ salons and even then they will blow you off and inconsistently care for your hair. Just because it's NY is no excuse, and Reggie and his team understand this. They demonstrate at each and every visit that you are deserving of high level service and superb hair care whether you are getting a shampoo or the works. When I first arrived at The Hair Lounge NYC, I had hair in a ponytail because it was such a mess and that was about all I could do with it. Reggie immediately saw that i was in severe need of a major hair intervention and he rescued me and my desperate locks. Getting that fried crap cut off and rejuvenated was like hair therapy. Reggie and Tiffany and Charles made me feel like a million bucks! They were really professional and they listened. They took time to learn about my lifestyle, type of work environment, how much I work out and they created a look that brought out the best in me and worked with every aspect of my life. They also proactively took the time to show me how to care for it. Here is my typical user experience: This is what happened on first visit and it is the exact same experience every time: I arrived at the salon and was greeted by Charles. He was so nice and professional. He welcomed me to the salon with a very genuine smile, showed me where to hang my coat, gave me a nice silky robe., told me that they would be with me shortly and offered me tea coffee or a glass of water or wine. Wow! I opted for tea and he brought me a cup of tea (good tea) with a wedge of lemon on the side and various sugars, etc on a very nice tray - not lipton in a styrofoam cup with attitude. In less than 5 minutes, Reggie came over to me and welcomed me, shook my hand and introduced himself. He told me he was finishing up his client, apologized for the wait (there was no wait and I was early!) and explained that Tiffany would get me started. She then came over and took me to a chair and provided me with books to look at various hairstyles. i had some on my phone already so I showed those. Reggie then had a discussion with me about my lifestyle (details - work, exercise, how much do I sweat, any health concerns, etc and how do I care for my hair at home and how much time do I have, etc) very thorough! He then looked at my hair and explained very nicely what it would need. I wanted a short cut so that is what I opted for and he and Tiffany went to work bringing my hair back to life. They were very particular about what products they used on my hair. They were efficient, gentle and kind. In the end, I floated out of the salon with a beautiful, rockin' do and I have been able to take care of it even with my biz travel, vacation to the beach and all my intense gym workouts and it still looks good and it feels great. My hair no longer breaks off and it's silky even when I do it myself. During each visit, they always greet me with the smile, offer something to drink, take great care and show that they care about me and love what they do. It doesn't get any better than that. Reggie, Tiffany and Charles have great camaraderie with each other and their clients. I noticed something very important here. In all the times I have been to this salon, I have NEVER, EVER heard any of them make a disparaging remark about client or joke around at the expense of a client. They talk about music, what's in the news, their doggies or kids and tv shows and food and whatever their clients are talking with them about. It is refreshing and allows you to have a truly relaxing experience because you know they are doing amazing work with your hair and treating you and all of their clients with respect. It is with great enthusiasm that I go to The Hair Lounge NYC to experience their hair therapy. I have fun when I'm there, feel and look great when I leave and am more than happy to pay them good money for superb, consistent service and give them tips, too. I've tried to make an appointment twice, about a year apart. Both times, their appointment coordinator really screwed up so this doesn't seem like a one-off thing. They need to have a more reliable system knowing most customers are really busy people and don't have the bandwidth for mistakes like this. Having them lose my appointment on this second attempt has sealed it for me-- I'm not trying again. The first time, they took too long to get back to me so I booked somewhere else (we're talking almost a week). The second and most recent time... Booked an appointment for May 9 over the phone in mid April. Emailed on April 28 to say I had an appt on May 9 and could I get in sooner. Got an email response saying I could come in May 13, which wasn't "earlier." So I responded right away saying I'll keep my appt for May 9. I found my stylist Reggie, here on yelp. I came to the hair lounge in a crisis. My hair at the time (March 2013) was limp, lifeless, and severely damaged. I at the time gave up on my hair, which resulted in me wearing wigs to cover up the situation. Reggie had to do a deep cut and babied my hair to a very healthy state. What I appreciate most about Reggie is that he understands hair. He was the first stylist I had that understood the limits and and growth of my hair. My hair is naturally fine, coarse, and dense having many strands. Most stylists believe that due to its coarseness that my hair could be handled any type of way. Reggie understood and educated me that although my hair is coarse it's quite delicate due to it being fine. My hair today is in a very healthy state and I owe that to Reggie and his knowledge of hair. Reggie is forward thinking with style, but in doing so does not sacrifice the health of his clients hair. Lastly I'll say that when your in Reggie's chair he makes you feel like your the only girl in world.... He goes to work. He is quite the perfectionist. Had a custom wig made by Reginald. I absolutely love this wig. He colored the wig and had it ready before i came to the salon. I loved the that salon is personable and the professionalism of the staff. am definitely going back for all my weave/wig needs. read more

After reading all the wonderful reviews about this Salon,I called to make an appointment and I got the answering machine. I did not leave a message. Instead i went to their site to try and make an appointment on line but the link did not work. Then i sent an email with my contact information hoping someone would contact me. Later that day, I called again about 3 or 4 times and each time I got the answering machine. I tried calling over several days and each time no luck and no one would pick up. I found that so odd that i was calling for about a week and no one would answer the phone. Finally, the last call i made, I decided to leave a message. Surely if i left a message someone would call me back but no one ever did nor did i ever got a response to my email. It just made me wonder how did everyone else get through to make an appointment? I was a bit surprised considering the great reviews i read on how great this place was and the fact that the message on the answering machine said "someone will be sure to get back to you". I have had the worse luck finding a salon that understands my type of hair and after i read the reviews it seemed like the perfect place for me that' s why i kept trying. Some service! Reggie is an AMAZING stylist who takes the time to learn about his clients and their hair. When I made the decision to cut my hair, he walked me through the process, went over different ideas and ways to achieve what I was aiming for and kept me laughing the whole time to avoid my anxiety. Needless to say, two years later, I haven't let anyone touch my hair since. If you are looking for a FIERCE , trendsetting hair style--he is the man to go to. Not only can you book your appointments online, he has a system that ensures he does not overbook so that he can spend time with his clients and not have them waiting for hours and hours to even get started--which has been the norm in my past experiences. When you enter the salon you are offered water or wine, given a silk kimono and made to feel comfortable. His prices are not the least or most expensive in New York and although it can get pricy depending on how many things you want done ($150 for halo, wash, cut), he is definitely worth it!
