I stopped by Reggae Rooster to grab a half chicken jerk platter ($25.25) to go for dinner. Overall, the food was good, but a bit pricey (since I can get bigger portions for a lower price and just as tasty or tastier in the west end. However, I guess for the Sandy Hill area, those are the prices).
The chicken had good flavour and spice. It was fall off the bone, but was a bit dry from sitting around for a while. It had a slight spicy kick, but it wasn't too spicy. The rice and beans were excellent. They asked if I wanted oxtail gravy poured on it. Oh yes, please, lol. I even got a few tiny pieces of tender oxtail meat, yum yum!
I got 3 slices of plantains. They were soft and sweet and nicely done. I got to choose between coleslaw and macaroni salad. I chose the coleslaw but maybe should have gotten the macaroni salad. The coleslaw was not to my liking, it was mayo-based and I prefer vinegar-based coleslaw.
Service was friendly and very quick. There are a few tables to eat in. They also sell beef patties and coco bread. And some sweets that looked like coconut macaroons.
Glad to see some more Caribbean options in this part of town, but I'll likely stick to my favourites closer to home in the west end.
