This theatre has come a long way! I remember when I first moved to Lawrence in 2013 and back then the seats did not recline and the concession stand was limited. Now they have better recliners than most AMC's and the snacks are fully stocked! Sorry I forgot to take a picture): I bought my tickets online and I was so glad I did because there is no "ticket person" in the front anymore. Not sure if that's a thing of the past or just because we were coming to see one of the last movies of the night? We were able to walk past the concession stand straight to the lobby attendant. We were directed to the theatre showing our movie and found our seats quickly. In all honesty, I'm not a "movie person". I will always prefer to buy it at home whenever possible because I am one of those "wait, what just happened...I need to rewind" type LOL. Now whenever I come here I bring a big blanket because it's always super cold, then I end up falling asleep because the chairs are too comfortable. NOT THIS TIME! Not sure if I was really excited to see Zootopia 2 or if it was just that good, but I was completely invested and probably only blinked a few times; as I did want to miss a thing. The seating area was clean, the screen was huge and only interrupted once for camcording without a flash which I really appreciate. The only issue I have which may not be able to be fixed is how bright the lights were during the previews and the previews lasting 25-30 mins?! Like I said I don't go to the movies often and I usually arrive as the previews are ending, but previews should only last 10-15 minutes maximum. There are only 4 locations left in Kansas and 2 of them are in Wichita and the other is Topeka. There isn't one in the Kansas City area as the closest location would be St. Joseph! Regal Cinemas are diamonds in the rough and bring back the nostalgia of going to the movies in the early 2000's. Decided a quick date night. Booked the tickets online and headed to the theatre for the 9:25pm screening of "Not another Church Movie. The service was great and the atmosphere was clean. Just visited yesterday on 1/23/24 at 5pm. I was served at the counter by a woman with short hair who obviously didn't win any awards for excellent and happy customer service. It was like I was a bother to her just for ordering a drink and popcorn. I was offered a minuscule amount of butter which I barely tasted once received. I asked for a soda and instead of asking what type, I was told to look at the fountain. The theater seats were comfortable but are positioned so high, you cannot put your feet down on the ground. Yes, it's great to recline but sometimes you just want your feet flat on the floor. Lastly, the screen seemed like it was from the 90's. It wasn't clear, I doubt it was even 720p. It was kind of like watching a movie on an old tube TV vs watching something in 4k at home. Overall, especially with the terrible customer service, I would not recommend going here. read more

I went to a 7:15 movie with myself and my girlfriend and her daughter. I get into the movie theater, and noticed that we were 45 mins into the movie previews. While the previews were playing, the light was pretty disturbing. It was a movie that was being released that I wanted to see and I hadn't been to the movies since 2019 because Covid kind of killed the nostalgia of going to the movies and I wanted to recapture that. So when I seen that the movie "Jesus Revolution" was showing at the theater I decided to go. First of all let's be clear that the location is kind of odd. It's located right off a K10 however it's behind a Holiday Inn, therefore if you're not familiar with the area you can drive right by it and not even notice it. But that's not the only reason why. The movie theaters actually has a sign saying Hollywood theaters, but it is actually regal theaters. I don't know why they have not changed the signage, but that can cause super confusion for people who are not familiar with the area. When I went to the movies in 2019 it was lit up, it had crowds of people and the ticket stands were full of anxious movie goers waiting to get their tickets, but since COVID-19, the tickets stand no longer operates it has been shut down. They put little decorations on the glass but you hardly see them because no one's even there. The crowds of people that used to come from all over the city to see a good movie, has dwindled to merely a faithful few that take the time to come out to see a movie now and then. What hasn't changed is the price of the tickets and the price of the food at the concession stand. You would think that after COVID-19 and how they've had to change their policies to accommodate that illness, that they would have included the price. But somehow that remained the same unfortunately. It is amazing to me that a bucket of popcorn and a small frozen soda came to $18 not to mention the $12 I paid for my ticket online. Besides the pricing I do notice that the theater is cleaner than it used to be. But this may also have to do with COVID-19 or maybe inflation in this country as a whole, considering that people just aren't going to the movies like they used to so that means there's less mess for people to clean up when the movie ends. I enjoyed my movie. I enjoyed my popcorn and soda but it looks as though with streaming from home, DVDs the pandemic and simply the rise of inflated costs of just about everything, I think the days of going to see a movie with the entire family is becoming a thing of the past. Will this place and other movie theaters survive? I don't know. What I do know is that when I feel like going to see a movie I will make that attempt because if I can relive the past of going to the movies and be able to savor the moment for a while, this is one of the places I will do so read more

Yes, it's very expensive. I think we are all desensitized to that at movie theaters now though, so it should go without saying. I'll only go to the theater once in a blue moon for the experience, because if I wanted a free movie with cheap snacks I would stay home! The big upside of this theater are the large, comfy, reclining chairs with tons of leg space. It really makes the movie experience so much better when you can lay back and relax, and you're not rubbing elbows with the person next to you. Some things about this place are definitely outdated like the lobby and bathrooms, but the theater rooms are great. read more

It's all Hugh Jackman's fault. He invited me to the movies with those tantilizing trailers for "The Greatest Showman". I had not been to the movies for years before that tease. WOW. There is a great deal that has changed at this theater since the last time I was there. Prices were up but that is to be expected. No shock there. The real shock was that you can get your tickets by phone and forego the entire ticket window process. It is kind of nice to just saunter into the show. The other thing that has changed is they now have a reward program. You get points for your tickets and for your concessions. I am all about reward programs. This is a very nice amenity. There is reserved seating and that is something new. I was thrown off guard by being able to pick my seat ahead of time. I could get used to this perk. The seats are recliners which is something else I enjoy. Before I always felt sandwiched and stuffed into a seat. You had to sit upright for a few hours and it made viewing a chore, at times. Cup holders are a new addition, as well. I enjoyed the new seating, the points program, the integrated technology. I think these are the types of features that will keep people coming back to the overpriced theater. LOL. read more

It's overpriced like every other movie theater and has all of the same concession stand offerings. It only has 12 auditoriums so, while they have most of the big movies, sometimes they don't have everything that's out. The biggest thing going for it (and what makes this better than the theater in Topeka or other places) is that you reserve your seats when you buy your tickets so you don't have to get to theater super early and you can get whatever seat you want. Also, the seats are super cushy and recline. When reclined, there is still space for people to walk in front of you so no one has to do that awkward stand and squeeze by thing that you have to do at most movie theaters. read more

A complete remodel of the area where you watch the movie requires I update my review. Gone are the small crowded seats where you feel like you're sitting in a miserable crowd and anyone in front of you checking their phones is visible. In their place, massive reclining chairs throughout the entire theater which likely means half the number of seats as previous. That's just a guess. Wide, comfortable, automated reclining and a rail to keep people in front of you generally out of sight in the upper rows means a massive increase in enjoyment. Mercifully, they left plenty of room for you to walk in front of others which I wouldn't not have expected. That said, some of the management issues observed years ago still exist. On Thanksgiving Day, peak movie time, the trash cans the floweth over everywhere. The bathrooms are sketchy and the floors messy in the bathroom. Some things never change. If I was rating just the theater viewing area I'd give it five stars, but the rest has sunken to a one-star, hence a three star rating. This could get a great theater, if only whoever ran it got their business (or insert other four letter word) together. read more

I keep wanting to like this theater. One for the obvious reason that there aren't any other viable theater options in Lawrence, and two, because I LOVE going to the movies. I really do appreciate that they remodeled the theater and installed much nicer seating and being able to reserve specific seats is the one true path. However, despite all of those 'comfort' changes, the sound quality in this theater is remarkably bad. NEVER see a blockbuster movie in this theater, it will sound like your listening to it on a pair of headphones that came with your Sony Walkmen in 1988; and that the volume is stuck on 4. It's quiet and has no depth. I kind of suspect the quiet is because they don't control sound leakage theater-to-theater so to compensate they just make them all quiet. But yea, drive to AMC studio 28 for any movie you want to EXPERIANCE. 2 thumbs down. read more

Came her for to see an older Batman movie this weekend as there are very few movies being released, and then even fewer ones worth seeing. Wow, just paid $10 for a Truly can and $10 for a Twisted Tea can! Never again will I order beer at the theaters. Pretty sure they overcharged for the Truly, they couldn't find either one of the beers in the computer so they "picked" the cheapest beer item. Ok, so I have avoided this theater for years, due to poor sound quality and less-than0stellar seats, but after a remodel in Summer 2016 I gave it a try...and I am so glad that I did. While it is still small, with only 12 screens, the updates to sound and seating have really paid off. They removed half the seats in the theater and have added totally posh, fully-reclining leather-like seats that are very comfortable and give you plenty of room to spread out and watch the movie (my visit was when I was 39 weeks pregnant...so if I was comfortable, it is saying a lot). The audio and video quality was also great...just as good as the Kansas City theaters that I was driving to in my avoidance of the Southwind. It woudl be 5 stars, except for the limited number of movies playing at any one time, but the updates have made a convert out of me...I will totally be back. read more

After remodeling, this place is great! Seats are assigned and the chairs are electric recliners. Comfy and roomy! Customer service was excellent and ticket prices were definitely reasonable! We didn't get concessions or use the restroom so I can't speak to that but the lobby and theater were both clean. We will be back! read more

Well, I've never left a movie at South Wind thinking, "Man, that's a really nice theater!" Most everything in previous reviews is true, from the very outdated interior to the horribly cramped seats with less leg room than a dining table at a convention of NBA players. While I'm sure the seats had some cushioning when they were originally installed 15 years ago, that's probably the last time they were comfortable. Being a musician, I'm picky about good sound systems. South Wind is completely lacking in this department as well. A good well tuned sound system with a full range of frequencies should rumble your guts when something explodes or surround you with romance during a love scene. Sadly, South Wind's tries to make up for this through sheer volume. Subtle as an airplane landing in your driveway, most movies will leave your ears ringing and slightly more deaf from the experience. Liberty Hall isn't terribly much better, but at least they buy themselves some slack due their vastly superior location and history. Liberty makes no pretense of being a modern theater. South Wind was probably very nice and high tech when it was built 20 years ago, but hasn't been updated in any visible manner whatsoever. If you want to see a movie, it's worth the drive into KC. 30 minutes in a car will buy you a vastly superior movie-going experience. read more

Not because I think it necessarily deserves more than other reviewers have given it, but because it makes me sort of sad to give it only one... like i'm hurting it's self-esteem or something. Cheer up, little South Wind. Eh... But the truth has already been elaborated on in previous reviews. If you want to see a major movie in Lawrence this place is where you go. Or if you're like a lot of people I know, you drive 25 minutes farther to Olathe and go to AMC. "Why?" you ask. Why?? Because seeing a movie here (even if it is a very good movie) will confuse you. You may experience such mediocrity in your viewing experience as to completely block all memory of a film. Someone will say, "Hey, what was that Tarantino movie with the Nazis and stuff?" Or "Oh... You know that Wes Anderson cartoon-type thing?" Your mind will drift back to where you first viewed such a film. You will remember the stiff chair backs. The arm rests that cannot be moved in order to squeeze any additional comfort from the poor seating. You will remember the dim sound and visual display, the lifeless looking teenagers manning (or not) the snack bar or ticket collection booth. You will remember the sense of absolute disappointment on entering and, yes, leaving the theater. And when you snap out of your reverie, your friend staring you down--- "Umm... You in there....? You know what movie i'm talking about--?" You will swallow a sob, screaming "No--! Never seen it in my life!" read more

Hollywood Theaters regardless of city i've been to leave's a lot to be desired. This coming from a die hard movie buff. No matter what city I visit, there are two places that are must see's for me: Movie Theaters and Coffee Shops. I'm coming from the mega theater complex environment of AMC's Olathe 30. Moving to Lawrence, I didn't expect this same type of theater but damn....... KC's independent theaters put Hollywood to shame for heaven's sake. First off, their prices don't justify what your getting at Hollywood. It's pointless to show your student ID most of the time. The prices are cheaper (if you want to call it that) when you DON't use your student ID during most movie times at Hollywood. The place resembles an era gone by. Just something about Hollywood screams outdated and blah. The place is rarely bustling unless it's a weekend evening and the college kids are packing the place. Their concession offerings are a joke! Somehow, we got suckered into buy a plastic bucket for $15 a piece. We bought two of them hoping to make our money back by refilling the buckets for $3 a pop. I'm still on the fence if this is a good investment. Like my tip suggested, I think it is. Especially if you frequent Hollywood a lot. Their drinks are syrupy most days. The popcorn is sometimes over-cooked and stale. Hot dogs usually under-cooked. Candy selection is decent. Nachos are hit and miss. Hell, we've reverted to sneaking in food on occasion. Here's a plus; go online and sign up at Hollywood theaters website for a club of some type. You will get a free medium popcorn for signing up and I think a large popcorn coupon on your birthday. Be forewarned, have your State provided ID out and ready to show the cashier. They are sticklers for seeing ID in order to use your coupons. Yes, this is true. Also, depending on cashier you may be able to upgrade your free medium popcorn to a large bucket for 50 cents. Now that is a great bargain. Plus, the large drinks and popcorns are refillable for free. The theaters themselves aren't all that bad. The chairs are somewhat comfy but don't recline the least bit. Leg room is non existent. Sound quality is hit or miss. Usually pretty good. Don't expect too much hi res or IMAX quality showings at Hollywood 14 in Lawrence. Hear me out......There is a growing folk lore around Lawrence that this particular theater has had a "rat problem" inside some of the theaters before. I'm talking people seeing and feeling rats running across their feet inside the darkened theaters before and during a showing of a movie. have no idea if this is true. But many swear that it has happened. If so, where the hell is the Douglas County Health Department? Story goes that people have screamed and ran out of the theater vowing not to return because of this. Again, I say this with the term "allegedly" highlighted. Since I have no other choice really, Hollywood Theaters will have to do unless West Lawrence can justify bringing in a new theater chain to town. Or, make the 30-45 commute back to KC and watch some movies there. read more

Like others, I did not enjoy past experiences at this theater. Mainly, the horribly small seats. I disliked the theater so much that I drove 45 minutes to Olathe to see movies in their recliner seating. Since I heard about this theater's renovations, I figured it was worth giving another shot. I'm glad I did. Their new recliner seats are very comfortable and offer tons of leg room. The theater is meticulously clean and staff has been very helpful. If you previously swore off this theater, I urge you to give it another shot. I'm glad to finally be able to see movies in comfort without driving 45 minutes out of town to do so. read more

South Wind 12 Theaters are terribly outdated in every conceivable way. The screens are small, seats are uncomfortable, projectors dim and old, sound system bad, and to top it all off, it's overly expensive (even their student and matinee discounts are minimal). A theater of this quality is usually reserved for dollar films rather than new releases. They know they're the only game in town and so do nothing to remain current in technology or comfort. There's almost no movie I want to see so bad that I'd willingly see at this theater -- frankly, waiting 4 months to see something at home is ALWAYS preferable than suffering through a film here, all the while feeling like you've been taken advantage of (and South Wind 12 isn't the type of place to buy you dinner before or after). It is minimally sufficient to be considered a place that one goes to watch movies. Review: 1 star. read more

A-OK indeed! Though, you should know that I am not a huge movie-goer, I see a film like once a month. The prices may be high (~$9), but really, is there anywhere cheaper that shows current films? They do have a student discount, which helps a tiny bit. It's not an awesome theater, but to fulfill my need to see a film on a large screen, it does it's job. I would not drive out of Lawrence to see a film, unless I wanted to specifically see an IMAX film, or was with someone who needs ultra-snazzy theaters. It does look hokey inside, but not run-down (though, the theater interiors do look a little beat-up), but who really cares what the lobby looks like? But yes, the theaters themselves could use some patching up. My biggest complaint would be the seats - I admit that now having gone to theaters where you can lift up the armrest, I am spoiled, and I am frustrated by the immobile armrests. If you want to see a film on a big screen and don't mind being separated from your lover or pal, I say go for it, and have your student ID ready. read more

We came in to watch the Hunger Games sequel and it was SO cold in the theater. The concession stand options weren't plentiful so we settled on a small popcorn and a bottle of water. The popcorn was your standard overpriced movie theater popcorn. The layout of the theater (#7, at least) was spacious and easy to navigate. We chose to sit in the front section which wasn't terribly close to the screen. The seats were a huge surprise (and not in a good way). When you sit down you are instantly reclined whether you like it or not. I thought my chair was broken but found that all the chairs had that feature. It wasn't the best movie experience but I was told this was the only movie theater in Lawrence so there you go. read more

I really appreciate the stadium style seating and reclining chairs. I also enjoy the fact that the seating is assigned, I tend to buy my tickets the morning before the show I am going to catch and it is easy to keep a group together. The theater was remodeled, and they added recliners. The problem with the theater is they gutted all the center seats, so you have to sit on either side of the center (the walk way goes right up the middle of the theater). So not only were the best seats removed, but since you come in the middle, you are seated in the middle, a huge railing (which of course in well designed theaters is placed on the outer sides) blocks your view when you recline if you have the first seat next to the isle- Whoever designed the theater didn't look at their sight lines from a reclined position, which people are normally in. So, I think the lowest bidder got the contract to remodel the theater, and so much could have been done that wasn't. Also, the sound quality is piss poor, and the recliners were cheap feeling, and actually not that comfortable. read more

They had one popcorn machine on and said it was "broken" and they "had someone working on it" but we can clearly see that the machine right in front of us is not being worked on. Like popcorn is the thing people want when they go to the movies. Turn on another machine. Be a little prepared and as someone who works in the service industry I can say, it wouldn't hurt to be a little apologetic when you don't have the thing people want. read more

I didn't actually see a movie here today because of the stupid reserved seat policy. They cannot seem to plan ahead to make sure there are two available seats together. Lost more than seven ticket sales while I was standing there, for three different movies. And they no longer have a local number for me to speak to the manager...so. And the people ahead of us in line were bringing in a dog. Really? A dog in a movie threatre? And not a service dog. Service dogs, I get. Pets....not so much. read more

How does Lawrence have this place as it's only corporate theatre? The prices are the same as the nice, large corporate theatres found elsewhere, but the sound is poor, and the projection is hit or miss. It's like seeing a movie 15 years ago. The timing of the movies is also not thought out, it seems like they all start at the same time, which creates a long ticket line. And, although it makes me sound like an old grumpy person, I'll say it- it's overrun by junior high kids. Despite the half hour drive to another theatre, I rarely go to South Wind. read more

Worst theater ever. The screens are generally small, the audio is worse than my television set at home, the projectors are outdated, the seats are old and worn out, there is no leg room at all (which is funny because no one is ever there). And maybe worst of all, the tickets and concessions are far to expensive for how bad the theater is. If you can make it 30 minutes up the road to Overland Park I would strongly recommend it. read more
