The veggies were cooked perfectly and the salmon skin was nice crispy. I treated myself to the maple cream brûlée and loved that it was super light in flavor but still deliciously. The Redwood Grill has good food which rarely disappoints. The location has lots of parking and the restaurant is deceivingly large which can accommodate big groups. The downsides include: the atmosphere is very dull with dreary decor, seniors make up most of the patrons (no offence, Grandpa!), and the service tends to be a little slow or insincere. My husband and I used to live in an apartment near here so we've been many times over the past 6 years. I've always loved their fish and chips, and they've updated the menu over the years with new things to try. Most recently we went yesterday and I ordered the Haddock BLT with a Beet & Spinach side salad, my husband ordered their Mushroom & Swiss Burger with a side of fries. My meal was delicious and I'd recommend it! My husband's burger was a little dry and bland (he couldn't taste any condiments on it), but his fries were perfect. Our server yesterday was nice enough, but asked us how our meals were twice without actually pausing to stop at the table, just while walking past us. The restaurant wasn't that busy, so she didn't need to rush. I watched her and other staff members drinking water or soda at the bar and chatting for a long while, so she obviously had time to waste. Had supper here, the staff were very friendly and the restaurant was clean. First thing, there is only 1 steak on the menu. All the burgers are fresh and made in house according to the waitress. Ordered a plain burger and beet salad, and the steak. Burger was excellent and the beet salad was very good. Steak however was another story. ordered medium, came out almost well done and was bland and very oily, which tells me it was not a fresh steak and that it was probably prepackaged and then was cooked in hot oil in a frying pan and put on the grill to give it the grill marks. The fry frites were ok but heavy on lemon, they don't really go well together. It's $25 for the steak. Would have sent it back but was on time crunch. I took my friend here for lunch as it was her birthday. She enjoyed her pasta dish. I got the beet and spinach salad which was described to have poached beets and beet chips. The beets were chopped canned beets and there were no beet chips. Just beets in spinach. No bread or roll. Pretty pricey for no cooking involved. We told the server it was my friend's birthday . No response from the server. We ordered carrot cake which was dry but my friend ate all except a few bites as she felt obligated as I was treating her. The server asked why the cake didn't get completely eaten and we told her it was dry. Her response, "That's too bad. ". I tipped 20% as overall the service was courteous and timely. Before I even start, I'm going to tell you... I'm currently having an allergic reaction as I type! I will NOT be EVER going back! Bathroom- window dressed! Customer Service- horrible Food- not worth it! Bathroom It looks impressive but it's all show! There's a soap pump, filled with water! No soap anywhere to be found! Screws missing from door hinges... It looks nice! But it's all faked! Customer service Oh my! It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had! We were there with a group, one person had a lot of food issues, the waitress came back 4 times with excuses why they couldn't serve her! They settled on a compromise that was agreeable.. The waitress always came to one end of the table and asked only 4 of us about everything ignoring half of our group! She ran away faster then anything between orders! I have allergies, and clearly they were not communicated! Otherwise I'd not be having a reaction as I write this! Food Holy crap was it ever GARBAGE! I ordered a chicken curry pasta, there was sweetened coconut on it, which doesn't work with a savoury dish! When it started to get cold the oil started separating from the sauce! My pasta was over cooked... Basically it was TERRIBLE! 3rd or 4th visit over a few years: came for breakfast at about 10am with several girls on a sunny Saturday in January. I tried the B.E.L.T. sandwich (Peameal bacon, jalapeño cheese, tomato, Cajun mayo, arugula, fried egg on toasted bread $10). They must've run out of arugula because mine ended up with baby spinach instead, but that's fine. The sandwich itself was satisfying, big enough to fill me and the toast a bit buttery to add flavor. (with side of frozen home fries, that were decent). I am guessing I paid extra for the side, but don't remember. The others all seemed to enjoy their meals enough, although don't remember any comments other than the fact that the omelette only comes with two toppings. Noticed the place was busy but then waited more than 10 minutes for our waitress and another 15 for water and a beer. To our waitress- we saw you busing your own table and only 3 people working the front of the house. I ordered a house salad with blue Cheese dressing on the side. Didn't realize house salad was already dressed ‍, you could have told me they come with dressing. I ordered the chicken breast with mushroom sauce. It took over an hour for us to be served our meal and my chicken was served burnt but flipped over so I didn't see it until I tasted it and flipped it over. My daughters 21 st Birthday dinner was booked here for 6 people. 3 steak dinners at $75 was outrageous. Mainly because the steaks were thin, fatty bland slabs of meat laying atop a pile of garlic mashed potatoes with skins. No veggies. No colour. Two stars might be a little harsh, but there's something really important the Redwood Grill needs to know: Sweet potato fries should not come with ketchup. I know it sounds small and nitpicky, but I've eaten many an order of sweet potato fries at various establishments, and they never come with ketchup. They don't go with ketchup. OK, moving on. The sandwich I ordered during my most recent visit to the Redwood Grill was very tasty and reasonably priced. The rolls they gave us were tasty (and came with whipped butter!) but were so tiny that I felt like they were taunting me. My main issue with this place is their entrees - the meal I had when I came for dinner was a bit pricey and just OK. This is probably to be expected from a hotel restaurant, and I won't return for dinner. But it's a decent place to lunch it up if you're stuck in the Bayer's Lake/Clayton Park area. Update: I've since returned to the Redwood Grill, and it is possible to get sweet potato fries with a dipping sauce other than ketchup if you ask, and pay extra. Considering a lot of low-end pubs don't make you pay extra for this same service, I think that's a little ridiculous. read more

It's not getting any better!! After seeing their latest win in the Coast, I thought it would be a good place to get my mom some take out while I was out. Wow what a disappointment. With the menu looking tasty, we opted for the Chicken Satay....which said it was done in a peanut sauce. We were really looking forward to this. Well were we ever disappointed. It was almost inedible. It was a large pile of sticky noodles-as if they were over cooked and left sitting in the water. One piece of chicken, not diced, sliced, pieced. It was so that you would have to remove it from the container and cut it on a different plate. And it looked very much like your standard frozen breast. And then large globs of peanut butter.....trust me this was no sauce. I have made peanut sauce and had it at other restos and this wasn't anything other than a tad bit fo oil and spoonfuls of peanut butter. And then.....it was SMOTHERED in whole peanuts. Not chopped and not just enough for a good tasting, actually like an entire bag of peanuts. I really think the chef has to take some lessons because this is by far sub par. The whole meal was thrown in the garbage and was almost $20 after tax. So, we did email the restaurant to let them know, that we did give them another shot by coming again, and were STILL disappointed. They were polite and did offer a gift certificate-great customer service. I've yet to use this, but I think I better try the pan fried haddock because of the large sign out front that claims it is the best in the city (by whom, I am not sure?). So one more shot you get Redwood. After that...I continue to take my business down to Claywest. read more

The outside appearance, previous experience with other Future Inn's (it's located in the lobby of one) and name had always struck me as a higher end restaurant. I'm glad I didn't make the mistake of making plans with that in mind. This is a traditional style hotel restaurant. Somewhat of a run down spot. As someone noted, it took forever be noticed. We walked in off the street and the place looked like a ghost town. When our server did notice us, she was a little cold, and tired acting. Not all that interested in engaging us. The food was a very "cookie cutter" for breakfast. I got a egg,. bacon and toast combo. The bacon was the salty pre-cooked type.. or at least it reminded me of that. The redwood is in my regular brunch rotation and I am never disappointed. I do wish their homefries were crispier, but truth be told, I should be skipping them anyways. The food is always tasty and the service is friendly. Avoid the booths if you are even the tiniest bit rubenesque.. they are TINY. The staff tells me they receive a ton of complaints about the booth dimensions. Maybe someday they will fix 'em! I've been to this restaurant a few times now, and up until this past Sunday had always had a great experience. The service had always been great, friendly, attentive, and relatively quick. And until a few days ago I'd always found the food to be quite tasty as well. The broccoli and cheese crepes are my personal favourite. Last Sunday the fiance and I and his parents went out for brunch to celebrate Father's Day. We rolled in here to find the place extremely busy (it being a holiday of sorts and all), which admittedly is why we probably didn't have as smooth an experience as we have in the past. So that said, I'm not necessarily planning on holding a grudge, but in the spirit of honesty and fairness, I thought I would share all my experiences, good and bad, with this establishment. Our service was, I will say, as friendly as usual. The waitress took our orders quickly, but then we didn't see her again, or our food, for a LONG time. We're talking "I'm so hungry I could start gnawing on this table if I don't see some real food in front of me VERY soon" territory. The good company and conversation helped pass the time, but suffice to say, our bellies were all grumbling quite loudly by the time the food actually arrived. My second issue was with the eggs benny (my absolute FAVOURITE breakfast/brunch meal). The eggs had been poached so long they were actually hard boiled, except for the very edges which were soggy and...just not very appetizing. These were barely drizzled in an extremely thin, runny, and way too salty "hollandiase sauce" (frankly, I'm not even comfortable calling it that). To top (or bottom?) it all off the english muffin was burned at the edges and insanely soggy and wet on the bottom. It was kind of like I was eating a wet sponge. I still do like this place, and I'm going to chalk this one up to a busy, possibly understaffed (I only saw two servers, which didn't seem like enough considering the place was packed and is not exactly tiny) day, and a most likely overworked cook. Still, given that it was a holiday and they must have expected to be busy, it didn't seem like a lot of planning had gone into how they would best cope with this situation in a way that would leave the customers satisfied and the staff not run off their feet. Nonetheless, this is the only meal I've ever been disappointed with here, and I will be back. And I would recommend it to others. Maybe just not at a peak time, like a holiday. read more

My husband and I will not be back. The service was great and the woman was very friendly, the drinks came promptly and the food was fast. I had the spinach and artichoke dip. It was priced like other places at $9.99 but like the other places - the portion is disappointing. Too much to dip with, but no more dip. It was tasty for what little I had. For my meal I had French Onion soup with a side Caesar salad. The salad didn't have enough dressing (I don't like a lot of dressing, but this was very little). The croutons were flavorless and not very good. The Soup looked AWESOME! I soon came to realize that the baked cheese on top was Swiss.. which I had personally never had on French Onion before, and I really did not like it. The broth of the soup was flavorless so it was like eating water with soggy bread. Adding salt did not help. I heard that the steaks there are done very well - but I can't see us going back. I was surprised to see this restaurant was only showing a 2 1/2 start average. Its very unassuming from the outside and seems a little disorganized when you come in...that being said we were greeted by a well positioned hostess at her stain. The bar & lounge area is to the left and the main dining room to the right. It was quite busy and our waitress did not leave us sitting long before stopping by and offering drinks as well as specials for the evening. A couple things did jump out to me right away.1. the lighting is a mess...its almost like the retaurant lighting was designed to shine on ccertain tables and areas and then someone moved all the tables....some are bathed in warm light...others areuncomfortably bright....our was IN THE DARK! 2'nd was the noise level...WOWEE!! It sounded more like a loud pub....you could hear EVERYONES conversation. At one point I said..."Is there music?"....we both laughed as no maatter how you strained you couldnt hear a thing. All items are made from scratch as well as the desserts....something harder to find everyday in a reasonably priced dining establishment. The menu is full and varies....we asked the servr what her favorites were...so we went with the vegetarian Nachos...Salsa was a bit sweet rather than hot and they had layered the cheese and vegetables, rather than dumping them on top and leaving us with a lot of dry chips...GOOD JOB! Partner has the burger with Grilled onions and frites. The onions made the burger difficult t eat as there were so many and it was slippery..LOL....I opted for the bine in breast of chicken stuffed with herbs, cheese and pecans, finished with a demi Glaze. I opted for oven roasted potatoes and its served with mixed fresh veg. There is a wide selection of pastas as well as 8-10 sandwiches...and they are all the same price. Desserts are made in house as well...I opted for the "Apple Jacks" somewhere between a doughnut and a pancake....tossed in sugars and served with butterscotch and real whipped crea,...none of this nutri whip crap..THE REAL THING. Derrick opted for the Kalhua-Chocolate cheese cake...it was a scratch made...real baked cheesecake. All in all it was quite deliscous. Service was outstanding.....food was fresh flavourful and HOT! I was dissapointed to find out that they restaurant had VERY RECENTLY sold to The Grafton Connor Group from a private owner....I have found in the past some corners get cut and quality and service may tend to slip when a large corp takes over...and although local this company has many eating esatblishments under their belt now. I hope they see what they have here and don't mess with whats working.... I have heard brunch is AMAZING and cannot wait to try. Just regular seating ,nothing special about the decor.Seems like your average family restaurant again until you eat their food. I first heard of the place from a friend.I had driven by it so many times on my way to bayers lake but didn't even notice it. On a night out (don't recall what randomness we where up to) with our favourite couple friends. The boyfriend and I mentioned we wanted to go for dinner somewhere nice with amazing food. Emma then went on to explain that they had the best seafood crepe in the whole entire galaxy with a dill sauce (for those of you who know me,I am a picky eater and a tough critic of food.....I lie of anything really so heard dill + seafood I was reluctant) I went on to tell her how I would not be happy didn't live up to her rave about it.Actually before I said that I made a dramatic comment of how dill and seafood where a weird combination blah blah blah, then the thing about how I will be very unhappy if its not good. To cut the story short we went , we saw, we conquered and have returned several times to have the same exact dish. I haven't felt the need to try anything else on the menu ( insert the phrase why fix it when its broken here - even though it doesn't really make sense but you catch my drift) .I have only ever had two other items on their menu -calamari and cheesecake, both of which brought tears to my eyes because of just how amazing they are prepared. The moral of the story is go to Redwood order yourself the calamari to start and then the seafood crepe in dill sauce for your main and end it with the beautifully made cheesecake. I'm staying here while in the city for work. This morning I went for breakfast, was VERY disappointed in the service. This evening I decided to give them another chance. The food is delicious however, again the service was terrible. I had an appetizer and a main course was checked on ONCE during the whole time which was after I received my main course. Well I have been to this restaurant many times, and enjoyed the experience, my latest visit was not so great. Stopped in on a Sunday evening for dinner. I ordered the curry chicken penne and my husband ordered the steak. The penne was supposed to come with garlic bread however I received a piece of bread that was not even buttered, much less had any garlic. My husband ordered his steak to be medium rare and it arrived very well done. Our server ran by our table asking how everything was in passing so we could not even let her know. We had concert tickets so couldn't have waited for a new steak anyway. For $25 the steak was a huge disappointment. We dined at the Redwood Grill for the first time, based on the recommendation of a relative. Overall, we found the food to be quite bland and uninspired. The portions were fine and the presentation was nice, but the food itself wasn't anything special. We ordered the spinach & artichoke dip to start. The flat bread was tasty (and the tortilla chips were just basic chips), but the dip itself didn't have much flavour at all. It seems as if it would be tough to make a bland S&A dip, but they accomplished it! My wife ordered the seafood crepes, which she said had a pretty good flavour. I ordered the pork tenderloin with a mushroom sauce and garlic mashed potatoes. Again, it was bland... not bad, just not exciting in any way. Meh. The best course was dessert - we shared the peanut butter bombs, very tasty! We were pleased with the atmosphere and the service. Our waitress was pleasant and efficient. We probably won't be back, at least not as a specific destination. It was beyond description to go to eat fish that is literally still cold. Gag. Forgiving as we are, we ordered something else, chalking it up to bad luck. Yet, the curried chicken (an old fav of ours) was bland. Did they lose the old recipe?! When we asked for the cheque, our very kind waiter told us it was on the house and free dessert. We were surprised, thinking wow, they are going the extra mile. But we misunderstood - they charged us for everything except for the single dessert serving we didn't even want to order. That's right, they charged us for the entree that replaced our raw fish! So, that was the last of a string of disappointments at Redwood this year.
