Took my Yamaha guitar in for fresh strings and a proper setup. Was greeted professionally, explained what I wanted. got a price quote & was told it'd be done in about an hour. Figured that'd be a bit optimistic...got a call back 25 minutes later saying it was done. Granted, the instrument needed very minimal adjustments, but still... Went back to pick it up, didn't really need to strum it - one look told me it was set up properly. Paid the gent (pretty nominal fee BTW), took it home...massive difference in playability. Needless to say I'll be doing future business with Redlands Guitar Shop. Well done & well recommended. read more

I'm not an expert on guitars, but I brought an electric guitar I had in a few months ago and the guy looked at it, said it was in rough shape and offered me $50 for it. It had a few scratched from a tree falling in my room, but nothing that couldn't be fixed and he didn't even play it or see if it worked. I asked if he did trade ins for other used guitars and he offered me a used bass for $200 (specified this was the cheapest) and said no trade ins. He kind of seemed like he was annoyed at me even asking to trade in. A little disappointed since this is the closest guitar shop other than guitar center. I feel bad leaving this review, but seeing from other reviews talking on similar experience, it's clear it's not just specifically me. read more

I came in wanting to support a local business. I was looking for strings and tried to be friendly and got ignored, then given a quick good bye. My first feeling was I must have wronged the cashier in another life. My second feeling was wishing I had just ordered my strings online instead of paying extra for the bad vibes. I gave three stars for the benefit of doubt?? I don't know maybe it was my fault and im just an emotionally needy guy? Or maybe this is the start of a vicious cycle of emotional abuse and this is the early stages of stockholm talking. I mean its completely possible it was my fault. Maybe i should have started with something simple like a comment about the weather? Or maybe its just the way i spoke the words. There's people for that right? Like a tutor? Oh yeah a linguist? Do they do that? I dont know but ill look into it if it decreases the likelihood of me having to experience this sort of interaction again. I have a number of ukuleles and one was developing some sharp edges on the frets. I suppose that in our dry climate the fretboard wood had shrunk a bit and the metal poked out in a really irritating way that I couldn't fix using any tools I had at my disposal. I took it downtown and Mike immediately took it into the back room and fixed it up using his special luthier expertise. Now it feels great, and the price was *very* reasonable. I was also happy to know that RGS has both Aquilla and Martin ukulele strings in stock, as I do like to buy locally. read more

One thing that Michael B. Doesn't mention is that he's a Deadhead from way back during the Pigpen years. If it's cool enough to take my long walk, I sometimes drop by, and shoot the breeze about various Dead concerts, and other groups during the 60's, and 70's era. I called about a Mandolin and was shocked to hear that a used rouge at their shop was 200$! Total rip off.. I mean they are good people but they do try to hustle their customers. And even though they are a local buisness its no excuse to try to make that much over on a customer. Like cmon people can compare prices. read more

Several years ago I took a mandolin with a broken bridge in to be repaired. I was told the repairman would carve a new bridge and I was charged for this. Turns out all he did was pin the old one and paint it black. It broke a week later. I also brought in a National Steel Dobro to have the action raised. It was there for two weeks and I was then told he had raised it as far as possible. I checked with a digital caliper when I returned home and nothing had been done, even though I was charged. They may do well with lessons, but I would burn the instrument before I took it to Redlands Guitar for repairs. read more

This is not a place to take music lessons. I wanted to support a local business and scheduled guitar lessons here for my kids. They were scheduled with 2 different teachers, Mike and Sean, at the same time. When we showed up for the first lesson, we were told "Sean isn't here today." So, at least Mike did their lessons back to back instead. The second time, they called us to reschedule. At that lesson (which was only my kid's 2nd lesson), Mike seemed angry at my kid that he had not memorized all the chords yet. The third time, we walked in and Mike acted like he had never seen us before and asked why we were there. He was kind of rude. When I told him we were scheduled for lessons, he said he didn't have us on the schedule and Sean wasn't even there to add us on. There were no apologies and he acted like everything was my fault. They are completely disorganized. The store seems dirty as well. The couch where parents are supposed to wait is nasty, dirty, and broken. Will not be going back to this place for lessons or anything else. read more

Just bought a guitar from this shop. This shop had a great selection and provided Good customer service. The price was great and the owner gave me a little history lesson since I am a first time buyer. They also do lessons there which is nice and offer services there. It's helpful to have a place to take it back to when in need of anything. He also had a lot of guidebooks. read more

I originally brought a Les Paul for a setup, after it started buzzing after a string change. I only came here because all other shops were closed or limited due to the coronavirus. They adjusted the bridge, truss rod, and intonation on the spot, and my guitar was sounding so great that I decided to bring in my acoustic guitar that needed some attention. This guitar required a little more serious labor, so I left it overnight, and when I got it back, it sounded better than ever. I am very happy with both their work, and the the quick turnaround for repairs. I'll likely never go to Guitar Center for repairs or setups again as long as RGS is around. read more

Came in here for some new strings and man! They charge double for a regular pack of Ernie ball slinky's I know it's a small business so I decided to just suck it up. They guy in the store looked really depressed I tried to make some talk but he just seemed really down in the dumps. I was trying to check out the gear in the store but he was always right behind me. If your instrument means anything to you !PLEASE DO NOT! take it to Redlands guitar shop. I recently took my BRAND NEW fresh out the box GIBSON SG for a routine setup. No big deal right? WRONG!. What i got back instead was a poorly setup guitar and several scratches and major dents. I had my guitar for less than a week when i took it to them and now it looks like I've had it for several years. The worse part is how disrespectful the owner and staff were when i went back to the shop. They yelled at me and blamed me for not knowing how to "take care of my own guitar." So if you want to save yourself the headache take your business elsewhere. read more

My 11year old has been taking lessons for almost a year. We bought her first classical acoustic guitar and just graduated to a small electric guitar for Christmas. We appreciate Mike for his knowledge and Sean for his lessons. He's a great guitar teacher. I went in to sell a Cordoba classical guitar and tried to negotiate a reasonable price for it being a new guitar. Once we agreed on a price, the buyer Mike, wanted to back out on the transaction. He explained they were a small business and didn't have a lot of purchasing power so we agreed on a consignment where I could sell it in their store while they get a fraction of the profit. It stayed in the shop for a month and a half and it just wasn't selling so I went in to terminate the consignment, I really needed the cash and I've had better offers selling online in the past. While I was in the shop, he was criticizing my decision to terminate the consignment, I just wanted my guitar back and he was really hesitant on letting it go. We decided to negotiate a trade my Cordoba which he said he would sell for about $350 for a $200 beginner violin. Once we agreed on the trade he then told me he couldn't use the full value of my guitar because it was used (he said it was only worth $150 and wanted me to pay an extra $50 for the used violin). I tried to be polite because as a local I really want to support local business, but the whole transaction was such a hassle and Mike treated me with very little respect as I tried to negotiate with him. This is the most recent experience to follow up on others I've had with him in the past. It's a nice shop when someone else is running the counter but my transactions with Mike were enough for them to lose my business. read more

This place rocks!!! I admit I've only been here twice but both times they have exceeded my expectations. First thing that I brought them was my '09 strat to be intonated and have the tremolo adjusted, now my strat sounds and feels better than ever. Only costed me half of what I was expecting to pay. My second trip was earlier today. I brought them a strat style guitar kit, they're gonna keep it over night and give it the works. I guess I can't account for the work to be done yet, but I can tell you that I'm confident I will get it back in better condition that I left it in. read more

I am so glad that someone told me to go to Redlands Guitar Center in Redlands, I have been looking all weekend for someone to help replace and tune my granddaughter's violin that I bought for her from EBay. And The owner was such a sweetheart that he replaced all the cords and tuned it for such a low price. I was quoted much more at other places. He even gave me a 30 percent of my item and saved $10.00. Needed some advice on what guitar to buy and to repair a guitar. The guys there were straight shooters and very honest. Andy was nice enough to take a look and give me a great deal. Only dealt with small guitar shops in the past but went to guitar center (due to my daughter liking a specific guitar). I can tell you that will be the last time I ever step foot in a guitar center. Could not WAIT to get home and write this. I am embarrassed for my hometown of Redlands that this is the only option for guitar services. The guy who runs this place is a joke. Took in my brand new American Fender Jaguar to get a string buzz looked at and a simple restring/intonation. All of these things are things I can do myself, however, I felt a trip to my local guitar to have a 'professional' look was in order. Never again will I consider this place professional. He looked at my guitar, plucked the string a couple times and said 'nothing I can do.' Proceeded to charge me 40 dollars to restring it and intonate 3 strings. Literally came home and adjusted the saddle myself with a screw driver and fixed the 'unfixable' problem. This guy needs to hurry up and go out of business. I will take my gear to the idiots at Guitar Center before I give money to Redlands Guitar Shop to touch my guitar. So upset. Wouldn't even bother to tighten a volume knob for me after I showed him that it was loose. Please take my word for this. read more

I love this shop. It is a good example of a local, independently owned store that deserves support-as opposed to some other businesses in Redlandsthat treat you like chopped liver if you aren't a "regular" or haven't lived here for generations. ;) We've bought several instruments here, and I appreciate that the owner understands people are on a budget, and keeps his prices reasonable. We picked up a gorgeous Gibson for a great price.He's patient and lets the kids try everything out.
