Well to start off with ..my Name is Brian, I was recently at a program called Fellowship house..located in Birmingham..I found out about a ( Non- Profit ) place where if you volunteer at Fellowship house for 12 hours..then you go volunteer at this ( Non - Profit ) for another 4 hours..your able to pick out a bike..to use/ have after a year.Well that's a lie.Every bike is liked..the guy at the register found some reason or another not to let me pick a bike..then after it's all said and done..he had me a schwinn bike put to working order..or so I trusted to give me for my volunteer role.Well no sooner than I got a couple miles away from this ( Non - Profit ).. the bike skipped..and skipped .and skipped..etc..you get the picture..the bike was faulty..And mind you..all of this was in the Rain on top of it..So since it was pouring down rain..I figured one day soon I'd have a look at the bike to see what the problems was and maybe I could fix it..even though I was told by guy at register to bring bike back if ever a problem and the ( Non -Profit ) would fix it and I could pay on a sliding scale for the next year.You see when they give you/ loan you a bike..they put everything. Including your kids ssn numbers in this computer..lol..to make sure that you don't sell the bike for drugs..I know what your thinking..?did i get offended upon his last statement? Nope..I thought everyone was a drug addict..so I agreed with register guys ways of putting tables on people from any said back ground...it's only right? Correct everyone's doing it?Maybe it's just because im at Fellowship house..or because I have tattoos..who knows..or maybe it's because I didn't clean the toilet good enough..ir I emptied the wrong trash can for him..Who knows for real..but now im a drug addict abd im going to sell this bike before i leave that parking lot and run back( 20 feet ) lol and explain to the register guy.." i loaned my bike out for some meth and the guy was supposed to be back..over 10 mins ago." Please call the police..and by the way..can i get another one untill mine is located?lolIll get to the point..youll want to sit down for this one..im for real..take a seat..yes you..sit!!! Ok i just left bike shop ( Non - Profi ) and the faulty part on the bike i worked for was a spindle that goes on the back tire..and after it was fixed..the said price of $69.95.. on a sliding scalw mind you..Yelp..im thinking just like im supposed to think? I took 2 of my bikes here to be tuned up and have any needed repairs done. I came back 2 months later to pick up and one of my bikes had a flat tire and the tech just aired it up and gave it to me. It obviously had a slow leak but they didn't bother. My commuter bike had a ripped seat and the tech said he'd tape it up for me since they don't have the type design of seat on hand. Got that back and there was no tape I noticed later. But they decided that mu commuter's handle bar was damaged and needed changing, but I had been riding that bike with those bars ever since I had a fall back in 2012. It never was a problem all that time...but maybe he saw something different? I let that go. I didn't bother to mention about the flat tire as he was bringing it out because I can fix that myself but he could've saved me a little trouble right? I feel like they could've done better but I'll give them another chance in the future. read more

Redemptive Cycles organizes group bike rides around the city that they call Trample. The rides are on Thursdays and start at 6:30. I rode this past Thursday, and I had a great time. The trample is not a race, and doesn't look like the Tour de France. It is a leisurely, social ride that I felt very comfortable with. I love to bike, but I am not a serious biking enthusiast. I ride a mountain bike, and don't own a tight fitting bike jersey and outfit (nothing against them, just not sure I could pull it off). The route was flat, and very enjoyable. We rode approximately 10 miles, and it took about an hour and a half. The ride organizers manage the traffic. They ride ahead and block traffic so that the group can stay together. I estimated there were at least 100 riders on this night. But, I was told it was larger than normal because Corporate Challenge teams were participating. I loved seeing different parts of the city from my bike. We rode west of I-65. We made a loop that went by Parker high school, Legion Field, Bookwood-Princeton hospital, and Edgewood cemetery. I recommend the trample ride, and the Redemptive Cycles shop. I definitely will be back. read more

We were driving from Ohio to Alabama's Gulf shores when our bike rack fell off our vehicle at 70 MPH. A kind trucker let us know and we circled back to see if the bikes were salvageable. One wasn't damaged at all, but the other was. We looked up this cycle shop, and took the damaged bike there. The technician, Daniel, who helped was absolutely amazing. We told him our sad tale & that we still had hours of driving to get to our final destination. He was awesome, got the parts and had that bike repaired in less than 2 hours!! They really have a large community impact and definitely sacrifice a large portion of their money making by spending it on the community. My d bike ( Schwinn I bought thru Walmart came missing s lot of pats. - we emailed w Schwinn about 3 weeks - NEVER BUY an e bike from Schwinn!- I finally was afraid Walmart wouldn't return it if I kept dealing W/ idiots at schwinn so I had to call redemptive to box up my bike up return to Walmart - These guys are phenomenal!! They sent pictures , emails etc to Schwinn as well due in h those 3 weeks & when I called bc I realized I'd never get my parts , they were wonderful about boxing it up for fed ex ! I decided After this bad Schwinn online thing I'd order directly from Redemptive bc they are such a great shop ! Thoth ordered me an e mild in my size & tho I'm still awaiting it ? It's only bc the mfr is swamped w orders & COVID has delayed this shipping awhile . Still it's worth it to me up buy from a place I trust !! Redemptive Cycles is a local shop that makes me proud of Birmingham. It almost seems too good to be true. Their main mission is to provide bikes to people who could otherwise not afford them. People can donate their old bikes, then Redemptive turns around and fixes them up. Once repaired, they are sold at a super low price. Can't afford a super low price?... They even have an earn a bike program. For real. You can work around the shop and help out to earn a bike. Unbelievable. My worry is that this place is too good to be true. Given the chance, we should all donate or lend a hand to Redemptive. I'd hate to see such a worthy local shop fade away. read more

I explained my issues and they took the time to take care of my bike. All issues were resolved and when I left my bikes were working perfectly (they repaired/tuned up 3). I needed help putting my tricycle together so I called Redemptive Cycles. They were very helpful, they came and picked up the tricycle because I could not transport it to the store. They completed the work in an timely manner at a very fair price, however, the seat which had a long pole that could be adjusted up or down when it was sent to the shop came back with a seat that was not adjustable and when I spoke to the person that put the bike together he could not or would not take the time to come out and check the seat. I called them, sent them pictures and spoke to them but no one had the time to come out and fix the problem. It has been almost a year now and still my seat will not adjust. It is in the very low position and when I ride it my knees hurt because the seat is so low. read more

For places like this, I wished Yelp had a 6 star rate! Went there with a new B'ham resident that naively thinks that you can move yourself around town by bike, and that was looking for a cheap used bike. First of all, they got some seriously super cool bikes there. I'm not an expert, but you can easily tell when something is good for real (or at least I can!! ...joke) The whole story: I took a look around and among the worst looking bikes the lowest priced was $80. Then I assumed we were not going to find anything cheaper than that. In the bunch, there was a very cool bike that was in a great shape and had also front and back shocks! The bike didn't have the price tag, I assumed it was above $200, but I still wanted to ask for the price. The guy at the shop quickly understood that my friend didn't want (have the possibility) to spend much on the bike, so he told us that he didn't remember the price, that he had to make a call for it, and that in the meanwhile we could test the bike. We tried the bike, it was working great, the guy came back to us, asked if we liked the bike, when my friend said "sure I love it, but I'm looking for something cheap" the guy said... "well, you can have it for 40 bucks!" I was shocked!!! That bike is definitively a hundred dollars bike! What happened?? Simple, here they don't just sell bikes, they provide you with your bike! I came up to Birmingham for a 3 day workshop/training and the class took a little longer than anticipated and was hoping to make it to Redemptive Cycles before they closed. I called and spoke with Demaree ( 'D' ) asking if he would be willing to stay a few min late to help me with my quest to find a 29er and that I was just a short distance away. He said come on down and we will see what we can do. Talking about a class act... I was able to take a 29er for a quick test ride and told him I had a line on one through a friend, showed him the pic and specs to which he gave me his honest opinion and it was greatly appreciated. I was in need for a saddle and needed to be sized to which he took care of that also. D is a man who is passionate about what he does and I would highly recommend him and the shop for any and all of your cycling needs. Don't know a lot about this business really, but it feels like a non profit. The people there are so nice and seem to really be glad you are there. You can donate a bicycle there and they will fix it up and put it back into general population! You can also purchase refurbished bikes there too. The prices seem more than extremely reasonable, and you feel good knowing you are recycling a bike! I will definitely be going back to buy a bicycle ASAP! read more

Fantastic Shop! Everyone there is so nice and it's clear they love what they do and have a good time doing it We went to get my husband's flat tire fixed and the guy who helped us said he was an intern so he was learning, and the shop's owner Forman ( I think ) assisted him in fixing our bike---- Forman is a HOOT by the way! What a funny guy! He cracked jokes with us and the intern while teaching him, and us, how to fix the bike, what to look out for, etc- so it was definitely educational for everyone. He also looked at the bike and adjusted some other things that he noticed as well. For a new tube and labor it was $12- very reasonable. The shop itself is very cool and the outside has amazing street art in the back alley, as well is really cook bike artwork made out of bike parts. Forman and the people at the shop run a very community oriented business and really care about people, not just about money. They offer weekly community event such as FREE bike workshop classes on wednesdays, and group bike rides weekly as well. They also have low/no income programs that help people get bikes-- like a program where the unemployed can work a day in the shop and get a bike in return-- amazing! Glad that Birmingham has such a wonderful place here that helps a lot of people. read more
