My wife, her mom, and I came here as our second stop (09:05) on day five of our Northern California road trip. There is a big parking lot with plenty of spots to shop and admire. The gift shop is named Burl N' Drift Redwood and had a lot of souvenirs made out of recovered redwood. We ended up buying a few things. At the west end of the parking lot, there is a thousand year old-growth redwood. It has survived a lightning strike, a loggers axe, and a forest fire, symbolizing the resiliency of the mighty redwoods. It's worth stopping by to take a picture or two.

We were long-time…read moreresidents at the RV park-almost -8 years from 2019...loved the previous managers; the park was always clean...the laundry room and showers were cleaned and sanitized daily...the poop stations were dumped every week, and everyone who resided there had to have their dogs on a leash and pick up their poop..... There was DAILY security, noone unless they were PAID residents, could come into the park without checking in with the office. The office and the manager's home were always clean and visually appealing when entering the park. Now, it looks like a dump!! I always felt safe and that my concerns were addressed.... Unfortunately, due to issues with the owner, the managers decided to leave.....the park has been taken over by new management ( which it is rumored DO NOT HAVE A LICENSE to manage an RV park!!). As well as the rumor of a new owner who is also related to the managers. Huge red flag!!! Shortly afterwards, more family of the managers moved in along with homeless people. In the past 6 months, the park has gone downhill FAST!!! Park maintenance is nonexistent- the bathrooms and laundry room are never cleaned-GROSS is the perfect term!!! The dog poop stations are overflowing, and the poop bags are not replaced. People are allowed to let their dogs roam free without a leash, and most don't pick up their dog poop. The new management allows family and friends and homeless people to handle the office, which is only open 90 minutes per day. My lock was cut from my storage shed, which I had been paying for for 7 years. Management stated they didn't have any records of my renting the storage unit despite the fact that I had paperwork to prove it, so they cut the lock and left it open without informing me...My belongings were exposed for several days before I discovered it myself. Nothing is in writing..everything is word of mouth, which changes daily. It is hard to know what to believe. Management will permit others to run the office and daily events, but it changes from person to person. Rent is handled only through e-mail, and none of the invoices are accurate. Cats roam free and poop everywhere. The entire front section of the park smells of pot all day-every day, so getting stoned is more important than doing your job!! A lot of the electrical hookups don't work, and there have been numerous water leaks. The electrical hookup didn't work on our space, so a cord was run under another tenant's trailer and plugged into an alternate space. No one gets notification that they have packages or mail. The tenants have to tell the management that they have mail or packages waiting. No security- anyone is allowed to drive in or out of the park anytime, day or night. Our personal security camera has footage of someone wandering through our space at 1:30 am. We were forced to move from the existing space that we had occupied for over 6 years down to the bottom half of the park due to 'supposed' tree removal, but were promised we could move back in 2 days. We paid for someone to tow us, as well as a flat bed was rented to haul additional outside items, only to find out that only 1 tree was removed, which took over a week. The management told us that we couldn't move back because they don't make any money on long-timers, that overnighters are how they make their money. So an additional expense for us due to misinformation. Seriously, long-timers are what has kept the park going in the wintertime for years!!. Once that river rises this winter...let's see who stays in the park or who leaves. The management is in for a huge awakening!! Shouldn't push out the people that are making you a profit!! The new management is not only uneducated, , they are also clueless, potheads, and just plain ignorant.....Good luck on keeping your tenants! Please AVOID THIS PARK at all costs.....

The managers Michael and Kimberly (?) are professional and friendly. They went out of their way to help us settle in even while working through the afternoon check-in rush. My dog could not walk on it and it kept getting dragged into RV on shoes and socks. - Pro- Bathroom was close without being next door to this site. - Sunnier spot.

Two nights in a tent site this month…read more Pros: Fantastic service and communication by the camp host, both before and during our two night stay. Bathrooms were very clean, well lit, and fully functional. Firewood and other necessities were delivered right to our site upon arrival - so awesome! The patch of old growth we camped in was long-ago cut large trees which had sprouted a dozen or so normal trees out of them. The woods were DARK due to dense canopies and staved off the rain when it fell, which we loved. Most importantly, this CG doesn't fill up six months ahead of arrival date so you can actually book them like a normal campground used to be (I'm glaring at YOU, California State Parks). Cons: Loud road noise due to proximity to 101 and surface roads. In fact, several of the sites abut the neighboring private property, allowing you to see through an old privacy fence directly into their back yard. Luckily our host let us swap spots when we realized this. Several tent campsites lacked picnic tables, which made me concerned if they'd have been full (they definitely weren't this May weekend). The fire rings were sufficient but also just old wheels. Showers in bathroom were in dire need of new fixtures (hard water made them look quite...eek...just glad I wasn't wearing my glasses while I showered). We recognized this area is a difficult one to have high expectations in due to remoteness and gave an extra star for the supremely kind and helpful woman who hosted us. We may not be back up here again, but if we are I hope to run into her.

Benbow KOA This is a…read moregreat little campground just off The 101 at the exit for The Benbow Inn, built in 1926. This campground was built by the Benbow Inn back in 1976. The staff here is very friendly ( Katherine, Famora and Levi) and accommodating for all our questions and fun things they recommend. We found all the sites (fairly level), and the hookups well maintained. The pool and hot tub were clean and they will give you a towel at the front desk if you would like. My wife and I took advantage of the golf course, but be advised in the summer months is quite dry, but for the price, it was just the right amount of fun for us, since neither of us golf regularly. In the afternoon we took a stroll over to the Benbow Inn, beautiful and historical, for Happy Hour. Nice indoor or outdoor settings that really make this a must if you stay there. The evening was very peaceful with a nice fire and we saw no signs of transient as mentioned in another review. One person even criticized that the river was low...like they have control over that! haha. Plenty of fun places to drive to during the day, even the historical redwoods are not that far. For us we would definitely stay there again for a simple charming campground experience. Remember this is a campground not a room at the Hilton! Just a little perspective

The photos and reviews on the KOA website, so we hoped for the best. However, upon waking up to heavy machinery the next morning before 7am and barking dogs, it wasn't looking good. Once the store was open, I went inside to speak with the front desk. Upon my walk, I quickly realized how dirty and old the property was. Once I got inside, it only became more apparent. Lot of dust, ignore the mess signs/things don't work signs, and a girl at the front who just nodded. Not very helpful to say the least. I will spare the other details of some of the garbage and mess we encountered, but let's just say we didn't leave our RV much. Our site was also dirty and didn't look like it had been cleaned since a few stays ago. Not worth the price we paid at all!

Great location, low prices, clean grounds, easy check in, friendly staff…read more We wanted something close to Sue Meg State Park so decided on this place and wern't disappointed. In fact we decided to stay another night, although we moved to the site next to us because the first one was a bit uneven. We were in the back row higher up, which we preferred because we had less neighbors, although was a bit of a walk to the bathrooms/showers. With a military discount we paid around $75 per night. We were a little surprised they labeled these back sites as "ocean view" since you really can't see any of it through the trees, though you can hear the ocean in the distance which is nice. We were ok with that but in my opinion is false advertizing. The grounds are very clean, pretty well maintained, and very quiet at night. The sites in our area all had fire pits, and small decks with a picnic table. The showers do not require coins and the water is hot. There is also a hot tub near the office although we didn't have time to use it. We would stay here again and I recommend it to others.

I was here in June for a family reunion to see relatives, I had not seen in 50 years. It's even possible one of them had worked here as a maid in the 70s or 80s so that was really interesting. It was her old stomping ground. She lived here the rest of the family live nearby. This is a throwback to the 1970s which is why it's so charming and I think that's why so many people would love it. I didn't get to walk the grounds until the last day but there is actually an old-fashioned 70s style arcade with pinball machine machines it's just exactly like how it was when we were kids in the 70s and went camping with our parents. That's the type of stuff you would find. There's an old gathering hall in the back with wood floors that hasn't been used probably forever, which is gorgeous, there's a little Arboretum in the middle of the square that they light up every night with little violet lights. It's beautiful and you can tell that was an old area where there's a fountain that's no longer working. All charming and quaint. There's a little fire pit you can walk to in the back that looks like the type of fire pit we had at camp in 1975. It just has that old vibe that everyone loves and is disappearing everywhere so I pray they never change anything, but I don't think they will. The cabins are the same they're old-fashioned and beautiful however, inside they have been somewhat modernized because that's the world we live in people would be upset if things were original I wouldn't but a lot of people would. I found it to be gorgeous and quiet. The only complaint I had and they did give me back some money for that and I really do appreciate that is that my little mini fridge was rocking and making a lot of noise all night and that did keep me from sleeping, that was rough. I'm a light sleeper and I found the rooms to be cold because it's regulated heat and I didn't know I could go up and ask for a space heater or bring one so I didn't now I know. To answer the question would I come back again?? 100% I loved it there and of course the kitchenette was filled with everything you need, I didn't take a shower there which sounds bad because I was freezing, but the showers were clean. The bathrooms were nice. The room was small, but really good for the price. I do plan to come back next May and hopefully I'm on great terms with them. I think my little complaints or issues were reasonable and fair or they wouldn't have refunded but I'm glad that they did and I'm glad I brought it up so the next person doesn't go through those issues and I'm glad that I'm letting people know if you do get cold there. You can ask for a space heater or bring your own but just make sure you let them know. Let them know you brought it because space heaters are fire hazards and you don't want to cause trouble in a beautiful area like this Also, they did have an incredible campground which I left out so there was an area for RVs and then in the back there were actual pads where people had tents and camping gear and all I thought was wow I wish I could do that next time maybe my cousin will do that with me for a day or two and I can have the cabin as well oh, and I did forget to mention that some of the cabins had fireplaces which I think I will try to get next Time. This is the ONLY place to stay!! Also not far from the only gas station and the only market, which are both great!

It was sooo awe inspiring as we drove in to setup camp. Staff were excellent and the Campground Host was welcoming and informational. The bathroom came with a dishwashing sink (need's racks) and the showers were immaculate! The hikes out of the campsite were wonderful and the nearby drive too hikes were enchanting. Do not miss hiking the Cheney Grove as well-most of the hike were 5 stars but it was a 6! It is the Best Tent Camping spot so far this Summer...it beats Pinnacles, Summit Lake in Lassen, or the Venerable Ventana in Big Sur!!

This is my favorite campsite of all time. You're about 15 minutes off the main freeway so it's very…read morequiet and peaceful. That being said, there's very limited cell service, if any, which can be a pro and a con. There are many trails that lead to views or the nearby creeks, although most are not dog friendly so keep that in mind if you're bringing your furry friend. They have large campsite bonfires where campers are invited to learn about different facts about the environment and animals in the area, which is fun for children. There are clean bathrooms and showers which are available on both sides of the campground. Showers are operated by quarters so bring a a couple rolls. Each campsite has a decent amount of space and has its own table, fire pit, and bear proof locker. I've seen bears in the area but they are very peaceful and keep to themselves and just want to eat the apple trees. My favorite time to go is end of July and August because the blackberry bushes are fruiting, and you can make fresh blackberry pancake pancakes in the morning (although they have cut a lot of of the blackberry bushes down since they are invasive, so you have to walk a little farther to find them). Overall it's a very peaceful and beautiful campground that I find my self return returning to every year.
