It was sooo awe inspiring as we drove in to setup camp. Staff were excellent and the Campground Host was welcoming and informational. The bathroom came with a dishwashing sink (need's racks) and the showers were immaculate! The hikes out of the campsite were wonderful and the nearby drive too hikes were enchanting. Do not miss hiking the Cheney Grove as well-most of the hike were 5 stars but it was a 6! It is the Best Tent Camping spot so far this Summer...it beats Pinnacles, Summit Lake in Lassen, or the Venerable Ventana in Big Sur!!

That being said, there's very limited cell service, if any, which can be a pro and a con. There are many trails that lead to views or the nearby creeks, although most are not dog friendly so keep that in mind if you're bringing your furry friend. They have large campsite bonfires where campers are invited to learn about different facts about the environment and animals in the area, which is fun for children. There are clean bathrooms and showers which are available on both sides of the campground. Showers are operated by quarters so bring a a couple rolls. Each campsite has a decent amount of space and has its own table, fire pit, and bear proof locker. I've seen bears in the area but they are very peaceful and keep to themselves and just want to eat the apple trees. My favorite time to go is end of July and August because the blackberry bushes are fruiting, and you can make fresh blackberry pancake pancakes in the morning (although they have cut a lot of of the blackberry bushes down since they are invasive, so you have to walk a little farther to find them). Overall it's a very peaceful and beautiful campground that I find my self return returning to every year.

That's fine, we were happy to abide by their policy, so our only option was to purchase another campsite for the sole purpose of parking the extra vehicle(s). We had booked for 2 nights and when we paid for the 2nd site, we unfortunately didn't notice that they only charged for one night, which apparently their policy for non-reservation sites is only one night, which they didn't tell us nor did they warn us to check out from the 2nd site by noon. We ended up getting two $71.50 parking citations for failing to remove our vehicles from the campsite by checkout time (noon). When I spoke with the staff regarding the misunderstanding and how we obviously intended to pay for 2 nights at the 2nd site, the same duration as our initial reservation, one staff member in particular had a very poor attitude even though we were being very polite and just trying to work with them and their policies.

Bathrooms were a slight uphill walk from the site with running water, so so on cleanliness. Potable water were by each site maybe two sites per faucet. 138 is furthest from the entrance about 0.7 miles from the camp site entrance. $10 for wood bundle which you buy by the campsite entrance. A lovely camping weekend. Pretty private because the redwood trees block the view between sites and we were lucky that the neighboring sites were empty most of the weekend.

Two nights in a tent site this month…read more Pros: Fantastic service and communication by the camp host, both before and during our two night stay. Bathrooms were very clean, well lit, and fully functional. Firewood and other necessities were delivered right to our site upon arrival - so awesome! The patch of old growth we camped in was long-ago cut large trees which had sprouted a dozen or so normal trees out of them. The woods were DARK due to dense canopies and staved off the rain when it fell, which we loved. Most importantly, this CG doesn't fill up six months ahead of arrival date so you can actually book them like a normal campground used to be (I'm glaring at YOU, California State Parks). Cons: Loud road noise due to proximity to 101 and surface roads. In fact, several of the sites abut the neighboring private property, allowing you to see through an old privacy fence directly into their back yard. Luckily our host let us swap spots when we realized this. Several tent campsites lacked picnic tables, which made me concerned if they'd have been full (they definitely weren't this May weekend). The fire rings were sufficient but also just old wheels. Showers in bathroom were in dire need of new fixtures (hard water made them look quite...eek...just glad I wasn't wearing my glasses while I showered). We recognized this area is a difficult one to have high expectations in due to remoteness and gave an extra star for the supremely kind and helpful woman who hosted us. We may not be back up here again, but if we are I hope to run into her.

Neglected grounds: The RV park itself is cluttered with old trailers, scattered debris, and various abandoned items. It resembles a junkyard more than a welcoming campground. Unsafe water supply: Avoid hooking up to the on-site water. It runs an unappealing orangish-brown color and smells strongly of sulfur -- definitely not something you want near your drinking supply or plumbing.

The whole area sits well above the sea so there are ocean views. But the campground lies directly adjacent to an air strip, so you may be bothered by occasional landing planes as I was early in the morning. Bathrooms and showers were exactly as I'd expect at a campground - not hotel quality but not 3rd world either, so fear not the lavatory. There appears to be a laundry as well. Checking in/out was easy. I cannot comment about the deli but the store had the essentials that you might have forgotten to bring. (Why do some complain about the deli food? You're camping on a remote part of the Lost Coast, ffs.) The nearby cliff park was scenic as was Black Sand Beach. I will caution you about the drive in; it's very tight, hilly, and twisty. I'm glad I wasn't towing. On an aside, there's also a public campground an hours north at Matole Beach but it's first-come-first-served, and it's unimproved, i.e., no electricity, wifi, market, etc., and vault toilets. I enjoyed the remoteness of that place but I get it that many people require the amenities that Shelter Cove Campground provides. I was quite satisfied.

I was here in June for a family reunion to see relatives, I had not seen in 50 years. It's even possible one of them had worked here as a maid in the 70s or 80s so that was really interesting. It was her old stomping ground. She lived here the rest of the family live nearby. This is a throwback to the 1970s which is why it's so charming and I think that's why so many people would love it. I didn't get to walk the grounds until the last day but there is actually an old-fashioned 70s style arcade with pinball machine machines it's just exactly like how it was when we were kids in the 70s and went camping with our parents. That's the type of stuff you would find. There's an old gathering hall in the back with wood floors that hasn't been used probably forever, which is gorgeous, there's a little Arboretum in the middle of the square that they light up every night with little violet lights. It's beautiful and you can tell that was an old area where there's a fountain that's no longer working. All charming and quaint. There's a little fire pit you can walk to in the back that looks like the type of fire pit we had at camp in 1975. It just has that old vibe that everyone loves and is disappearing everywhere so I pray they never change anything, but I don't think they will. The cabins are the same they're old-fashioned and beautiful however, inside they have been somewhat modernized because that's the world we live in people would be upset if things were original I wouldn't but a lot of people would. I found it to be gorgeous and quiet. The only complaint I had and they did give me back some money for that and I really do appreciate that is that my little mini fridge was rocking and making a lot of noise all night and that did keep me from sleeping, that was rough. I'm a light sleeper and I found the rooms to be cold because it's regulated heat and I didn't know I could go up and ask for a space heater or bring one so I didn't now I know. To answer the question would I come back again?? 100% I loved it there and of course the kitchenette was filled with everything you need, I didn't take a shower there which sounds bad because I was freezing, but the showers were clean. The bathrooms were nice. The room was small, but really good for the price. I do plan to come back next May and hopefully I'm on great terms with them. I think my little complaints or issues were reasonable and fair or they wouldn't have refunded but I'm glad that they did and I'm glad I brought it up so the next person doesn't go through those issues and I'm glad that I'm letting people know if you do get cold there. You can ask for a space heater or bring your own but just make sure you let them know. Let them know you brought it because space heaters are fire hazards and you don't want to cause trouble in a beautiful area like this Also, they did have an incredible campground which I left out so there was an area for RVs and then in the back there were actual pads where people had tents and camping gear and all I thought was wow I wish I could do that next time maybe my cousin will do that with me for a day or two and I can have the cabin as well oh, and I did forget to mention that some of the cabins had fireplaces which I think I will try to get next Time. This is the ONLY place to stay!! Also not far from the only gas station and the only market, which are both great!

We arrived on the Friday before the start of Memorial Day Weekend, as there are no reservations, at least at this time of the year. The camp already had half a dozen campsites, filled, along the river, but we found a nice one. The restroom wasn't far and it had sinks and flush toilets. There were a couple of outside, cold-water showers, probably useful for rinsing off sand from the beach. The other restroom had indoor, coin-op, showers, which were "out of order". Our campsite had a picnic table, a fire-ring, and a water-faucet. It was a nice, shady, location. The other campers were mostly families and they all seemed friendly. Our closest neighbors loaned us their air-mattress inflator and invited us over for some BBQ! Petrolia is Humboldt's hidden gem, and you will not regret checking it out, the drive through the hills and along the coast, is phenomenal! A.W. Way Campground is family-friendly, with a circular drive that the kids can ride their bikes on, using up that last bit of energy, before it gets dark! We brought roller blades, but the road seemed a little too rough, however, it's perfect for bikes. We will return!
