On our first camping trip as a family, we chose the A.W. Way, campground, after asking advice from several seasoned campers. We arrived on the Friday before the start of Memorial Day Weekend, as there are no reservations, at least at this time of the year. The camp already had half a dozen campsites, filled, along the river, but we found a nice one.
The restroom wasn't far and it had sinks and flush toilets. There were a couple of outside, cold-water showers, probably useful for rinsing off sand from the beach. The other restroom had indoor, coin-op, showers, which were "out of order".
Our campsite had a picnic table, a fire-ring, and a water-faucet. It was a nice, shady, location.
The other campers were mostly families and they all seemed friendly. Our closest neighbors loaned us their air-mattress inflator and invited us over for some BBQ!
Petrolia is Humboldt's hidden gem, and you will not regret checking it out, the drive through the hills and along the coast, is phenomenal!
A.W. Way Campground is family-friendly, with a circular drive that the kids can ride their bikes on, using up that last bit of energy, before it gets dark! We brought roller blades, but the road seemed a little too rough, however, it's perfect for bikes.
We will return! read more
