Almost a year ago exactly my friend gave me a button with Tina Fey on it. "Where did you get…read morethis?!" I exclaimed. "I made it," she replied I gawked at it and envied her for having access to a button maker. A year later, Portland Button Works has appeared and granted my wish to make my own Tina Fey buttons. Oh, what fun! There's much more to this place than the name might lead you to believe. While buttons are there to be bought, ordered, or even made by you on a whim in person at the store, they also carry a wide selection of zines. I've only been there one time and I'm already feeling very inspired to read more zines. Finally a place in Portland with awesome zines that I can get to without crossing a bridge or those pesky streetcar tracks. The fifth quadrant of this city has been waiting for a place like this to open for a while now. If you're not fortunate enough to live nearby, then have no fear as it's just a block or so off the Killingsworth Max stop. Besides having a really nice selection of zines and buttons, the store itself feels very welcoming and cozy. There are benches to sit on inside that seem to be created from recycled materials, and I believe most of the shelving has been made from pallets. In the center of the store sits an island with a few button makers on it, beckoning for you to make your own. In addition to the awesome space, the folks who run the store are really welcoming and eager to answer questions or chat about zines. I am very excited for this new addition to the neighborhood and the future buttons to be made!

Prices that go down with steps in volume make shopping there super thrifty. It's reassuring how they keep you apprised of your order's progress as it goes through their system. You get an immediate acknowledgment, and notifications when the buttons go into production and get shipped. I asked if I could get the buttons by a date two weeks out, and they came in more like two days. I got a handwritten note from the proprietor and a bonus grab bag of RESIST buttons with my order.

I find the best candles here--Rachel Beyer candles are lovely and perfectly scented. The Covid protocols are in place and upheld--I'm grateful because visiting this store by appointment at this writing is wonderful. Cards, crystals, books and gifts are truly delightful and unique.

Look at my pictures of this gorgeous little ceramic pot with a handmade wooden top with seashell, and a handmade wooden spoon. There were several varieties of this for $25-$30. Glazed small bowls for $15. Beautiful mugs, vases, all affordably priced. Great stocking stuffers! I had to run to an appointment but I'm actually going back tomorrow to pick up more gifts. The proprietor is a former ballet dancer, her husband is former set designer, and they make all of this wonderful art. I love supporting local business and the conversation with her was so endearing to me. A wonderful visit. Highly recommend!!

We dropped into Side Door Ceramic Gallery on a drizzly Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago, during a…read morelong walk up and down Alberta. It was small and lovely, a shop as well as a studio, run, as far as I could tell, by the ceramic artists. There was woman spinning a potter's wheel when we walked in, with a sweet little dog, recently rescued, napping at her feet. She was friendly and welcoming, and we chatted with her while we browsed. The ceramics were gorgeous--rich colors, pleasing shapes. I liked every piece in the shop. The prices were reasonable, and I was tempted to buy more than I could realistically carry back home to L.A. After a lot of hemming and hawing, and reminding myself that I never use mugs, I bought two deep blue cups that I plan to use as succulent pots. If you're looking for some beautiful handmade ceramics, check out Side Door. It's worth a visit even if you don't buy anything. The goods are nice to look at, and there's a cute dog who might appreciate a few gentle pets.

There's not much parking 3 spots, shared with the building. The store itself has a few cute items but overall lacking a bit of charm I had hoped to find. It seems either fairly new or just not much in the store as it feels "empty". I'm not sure if it's this location or true to all the stores!
