We've been here twice and ordered to go once...everything we've gotten has been really delicious. They have given attentive service each time as well. The place is very clean and decorated with different Asian Knick knacks and art. Red Plum is truly a hidden gem! We decided to try out this sushi spot in Sarasota this evening with our friends after seeing their Yelp reviews. The place is a little hidden but dang is it good. Definitely the best sushi in the area and a great value too, the prices are very reasonable. We were treated with great service and even got a complimentary extra appetizer, so sweet! All of the sushi was beyond fresh and tasty, my favorite being the passion roll. Also, their spicy edamame was so flavorful and it was a generous portion. Me and my Family LOVE Red Plum!! We try to go every year we visit Sarasota. I Really recommend the broccoli tempura roll if you can do broccoli you have to try it. It's really quality with good service once they brought us an extra roll for free it was awesome! It's a very chill and they always have something cool playing on the TV like horse racing and other stuff that's fun to take a glimpse of. I had the chirashi and the boss had a spicy tuna roll and rainbow roll. The assortment of fish for my chirashi was atypical fore but it was still tasty. The oshinko could have been more crunchy for my liking. The rainbow roll and spicy tuna rolls were good. They use very little rice to make their maki and I prefer that. Overall our meal was a really good value. Basic makis, sashimi and sushi seem the way to go for me at Red Plum. read more

My partner and I decided to try out this restaurant last weekend; it was supposed to be our first date night out in several months, and I was very excited. It turns out we should have stayed in. The first problem we had started almost immediately after walking in. I have asthma that is pretty easily triggered by mold, and something in the restaurant set it off badly. At first I wasn't sure what was happening, because I couldn't smell anything wrong, but I felt awful and lightheaded, like I couldn't take a full breath. I got up to go to the restroom and passed through another section of the restaurant that smelled very musty/mildewy, and at that point I started having a full asthma attack. We had already ordered, though, so my partner told me that he would have them box everything up and that he'd meet me in the car and we could just eat there. I was disappointed (again, I was very excited to be going out, and having the date cut short by an asthma attack is an incredibly stressful way to end it), but I definitely couldn't stay, so I agreed. We ate in the car; the food was decent, but I was too focused on trying to catch my breath to enjoy it. I do remember thinking that it was kind of bland. Unfortunately, it turned out that bland food was the least of our problems. By the next morning, my partner was already starting to feel sick. (For the record: he didn't have any raw fish, but we think it must have been the gyoza that he ordered; it's the only thing he got that I didn't touch, and I felt fine.) By 4:30pm, he was calling me at work, asking me to come home because something was wrong. By the time I got home, he was vomiting. He spent most of his night in the bathroom, and I spent most of my night trying to coax him into taking sips of water (when he wasn't otherwise occupied) so that he wouldn't get completely dehydrated and end up in the hospital. The stomach cramping was so bad that he wasn't able to fall asleep until nearly midnight, and even then, it wasn't a comfortable sleep. The next morning, he felt a bit better, but before 4pm he was asking me to come home again because he just couldn't keep food down and he could barely get off the couch. (I made broth. Lots of broth.) He finally felt mostly better by day three, and was even able to keep down some mild food, but he was completely exhausted and couldn't go into work. He is also self-employed, which means that he lost all productivity for three days, and which officially makes this the most expensive date we've ever gone on. I've heard good things about this place. The staff seemed pleasant, the food was decent, and I generally don't like writing bad reviews about small businesses. But this was a truly awful experience for us both, and I don't want anyone else to go through something similar. Choose your dinner carefully. read more

It's our 1st time here today, and we came for some sushi. I have to say, it exceeded our expectations. We were pleasantly surprised! Fish were fresh, and the choices are extensive! They actually offer fish from Japan. Fish we have never heard of before, and we have had a lot of sushi from different parts of the country. The prices are also reasonable for what you're paying. This place easily takes my #1 in sushi for Sarasota. Prior to choosing sushi for dinner I perused the comments here taking notice to the sushi chef from Hoshi Sushi in Gulf Gate, a fav. I may not be part of the Florida Sushi Connoisseur's Club but I have dined with one at a favorite hole in the wall in St. Pete. I'd say this place will rival if not surpass since the cleanliness is above. Everyone in our party found a roll they loved, I think the Mexican will satisfy a picky eater. We also had the goyza rolls, edamame, and bao buns, pork and chicken, latter of which had my son asking for more before our meals came. I would like to see some fresh crab on the menu, although they do a wonderful krab, I always prefer the option for sweet crab. Look forward to visiting again soon read more
