We like sushi but seldom partake, making us novices when trying to order. There are so so many choices. I had looked at the menu online and had an idea what I wanted but because my wife and I were going to eat family style, she needed to agree. That did not go quickly and our server was quite helpful and also gave us some space to work it out. We ended up with a Chicken Bento Box and 3 rolls, Mexiset, Scuba, and Smoked Salmon. Because of some confusion our server also got us a sample of Sashimi Smoked Salmon. We really liked that guy. With plenty of food, we dove in. I must confess my favorite parts of eating sushi is using chopsticks and including the pickled ginger and soy sauce. And also getting overly full. For me it's a fun meal. And I've also thought Bento Boxes with the various compartments a cleaver and unique thing. It was a great meal. A little crunchiness on top of the Mexiset roll added a nice contrast to the other rolls, the Teriyaki Chicken in the Bento Box added a very sweet component. The Sashimi, basically a slice of smoked salmon on a rice ball, had a generous amount of delicious fish. We had our fill and took some home for another meal. I asked about the AYCE and learned most people do the combo meals like we did but the AYCE is also popular. If you can eat at least 5 rolls, the AYCE may be for you. I ordered takeout on the phone when I picked it up I saw a menu on the counter which had different price for the sashimi and asked the girl at the front to please give me the price on the takeout menu she said price went up I requested mgr or owner . He came over and gave me the reduced price and completed the bill I also ordered chicken fried rice. The bill reflected a 3% credit card fee and never told me about it nor did it show on my receipt. I came back in and asked why my bill was more than what it should have been then mgr gave me another receipt that showed the 3% fee. Sushi was amazing!! My eyes were definitely bigger than my belly. I ordered 3 rolls thinking they would be small. Definitely not the case! Each roll had 8 pieces. They were all delicious and I'd get them again. I went with the Japanese Bagel, Phoenix, and Scuba. The restaurant had a very modern look to it unlike the typical Japanese restaurant that is dark and stuck in the 90s...just an observation! The hostess was so sweet! Let me start with the positive, the service was good. The salad was also good. The miso soup was the worst I have ever eaten. It tasted like flavored water with a smidge of miso flavor. I ordered the chirashi and the first bite I took was the maguro (tuna) and it tasted a little fishy. Bad, bad sign. The rest of the chirashi was okay. Small portions and inconsistent slices. The boss had the 3 roll combo of spicy tuna roll, crunchy roll (shrimp tempura) and rainbow roll. The rolls were generous in portion and tasted okay. I'm not sure if I'll be back. A no frills sushi bar on the gulf coast of Florida is my kind of place. Stopping in because I found it on Yelp.while searching for something delightful! For about $25 I indulged on a pretty substantial menu of AYCE sushi. Nothing fancy and certainly no fanfare, but fresh and tasty goodness all around. The waitress was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the number of people here, but the real work was taking place behind the sushi bar, where a handful of young chefs were heads-down preparing platters of freshness. I tried the chirashi special, which is sliced sashimi on a bed of rice. This was pretty good though a little smaller than I expected. I also ordered a spicy tuna roll topped with eel and avocado which was really delicious. Tony has decided to put profit over quality and that is a real shame!!! My wife and I have known him since he started this business and frequently visited his establishment for both lunch and dinner (usually several times per month). We frequented his establishment even during Covid. As of late he started to change the menu (for the worse) and also severely scrimps on the fish portions. Not only that, but he decided to reinforce an old policy of charging for left over rice on your plates. How stupid is that?! We were shocked during our last visit there. We pulled a couple of ordering slips and proceeded to order our first round with a secondary backup. We were told that we could NO longer get Sashimi and left over rice would cost us. When the platter arrived, we were shocked at how little the fish pieces were, the rice outweighed the fish, at least 10:1. Pre-Covid 1/4" thick pieces of fish, post Covid 1/16" thick pieces of fish! After our first platter was finished we ordered a smaller second platter and was told that we could no longer order the Sarasota Roll. We asked why and were told due to increased pricing, Tony decided to remove it from the menu. We just had two of the rolls on our first platter!!!!!! We told them to charge us for any extra rice and that we would NEVER return to their establishment! 1000% disappointed with Tony and his decisions. Thanks for the food poisoning. Aside from unsafe food handling practices, this restaurant fails to deliver quality sushi, certainly leaving more to be desired. I know most wasabi we eat in the US is horseradish, but their "wasabi" is a vile whipped green paste and the ginger a noxious orange-dyed color. The "teriyaki chicken" on the AYCE menu is pathetic. It's a piece of par-grilled chicken that's certainly been sitting on the grill with a squirt of cold teriyaki sauce. If not to avoid the subpar food, save your gastrointestinal health and avoid a visit to this restaurant. read more

I eat a lot of sushi and this is one of my top two places to go in the country when I want all you can eat. Delicious. Seafood is fresh and the staff is vey good. I come to Sarasota once or twice a year and every time I visit; I have to eat at Ichiban at least twice if not three times. What I really like about Ichiban is that they maximize the amount of fish you get and keep the rice balls very small. Only place in the country where I see this. They go through a tremendous amount of fish. Sushi chefs are very good and pretty quick. Great selection of rolls and nigiri. You can also get sashimi for the same price, but they may - key word may limit your sashimi up to 15 pieces. I just found that out after coming to this place for years. All you can eat is only $23.50 which also includes soap, salad, and hot entrees. Drink is separate. This is really a great price for the quality and selection of food you get. Oh, before you decide you are going to go crazy and order 50 pieces of sushi, please remember and it is written on the sushi order form, that you will be charged for any sushi you leave on the plate. Leftover sushi is $1.10 per piece and leftover rice balls from the nigiri is 50 cents a piece. I understand why the restaurant does this in order to help prevent waste from those who are just a bit too over eager to order one of everything on the menu and to keep the costs down for the rest of us. Owner is very pleasant and is enjoyable to chat with. Definitely worth giving it a go. Oh, and go early to beat the crowd. Lunch usually runs from 11 am - 2 pm and dinner starts at around 4:30 pm. I tried the all you can eat buffet. The nigiri was miniature size, the fish to rice ratio was definitely in favor of the rice. The side dishes of tempura or teriyaki consisted of 2 small pieces. The tempura fish was coated in panko bread crumbs not tempura batter. The teriyaki chicken and beef were 2 small pieces with a sweet sauce added on as an afterthought. I believe it was some commercial bottled product. The maki rolls were also made with excessive rice. I will say the seafood was fresh but tiny. Not worth the money!!! I was craving sushi and wanted to try somewhere new so I took a chance on Ichiban. It is all you can eat for just over $23/pp which had me a little hesitant but I was really hungry so thought at least I will be full. The place was easy to find in a strip mall with plenty of parking which was a plus. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly and greeted us right when we walked in. We sat at a booth, which I prefer. There were modern metal art pieces on the walls and a big sushi bar in the center of the restaurant which was a nice layout. They have a big fish tank in the back which was beautiful. The all you eat menu is for sushi as well as hot food. There is a printed paper to mark what you want to order and you can reference the menu to see what is in each roll. All rolls with eel are an additional $1 each. The hot food is ordered per bite on a separate printed piece of paper. The waiter was attentive and friendly, helping explain how the ordering process works. We placed our order and the food came out pretty quickly. The rolls were average with flavor and texture. The crab salad on top of one of the rolls was not good and the individual sushi pieces were cut so poorly it is almost funny for a sushi restaurant. The tuna was flavorless but not fishy. The hot food was ok, I am not big on fired foods. The teriyaki chicken was like rubber it was so chewy, I am not sure it was even chicken, it had a very strange texture. Maybe it was just sitting for a while, I am not exactly sure. While sitting at the booth water started dripping from the air conditioning vent on my head. It was raining outside so I don't know if it was a leak from the rain or from the a/c unit. I moved to the other side of the booth to sit for the rest of the dinner. Overall the food was just ok. My boyfriend and I dine on the all you can eat sushi special atleast once a month. Does the quality and atmosphere rival the uber trendy sushi bistros that would cost hundreds of dollars to eat at? Not quite..but it is fantastic if you want to just stuff yourself full of sushi. The tuna is hit or miss but everything else is delicious. I wouldn't take someone there you want to impress. It's buffet quality sushi made and priced to order that way. Every time we contemplate going to one of the fancier places we always end up going to Ichiban because we know what to expect and won't be paying hundreds of dollars for a miniscule amount of sushi. I would stay away from the miso soup. The veggie tempura is very freshly prepared but the meat tempura is pretty much frozen fried shrimp and chicken nuggets. It's like going to the Outback for a steak instead of Prime Steakhouse pretty much. Ichiban is a sushi staple of Sarasota. I go at least a few times a year. What's great: They have a all you can eat sushi deal for about $24.00.... which allows you to try anything you want. The ring of fire roll and the Sarasota roll are both amazing. The remodel on the restaurant also is very nice What's not so great: The menu is more new than the slips to fill out the orders, so be aware that you can order anything you want. That's where they lose a star.... because essentially the all you can eat sushi is very confusing. The menu is different from the slip, there's two slips: one for cooked food and one for sushi. The other issue I have is the breading on the vegetable tempura. If I wanted all breading I'd go to the fair.
