Here is a bit of history the name is taken from the Mascot of the Royal 41st regiment of Wales. They carried a live goat on the Russian front line in the Crimean War. The goat survived the War and was introduced to Queen Victoria back in England. Originally simply called the Goat, the pub was renamed the Bluebell in 1813, and finally the Goat Major in 1995. To this day when the Royal Regiment of Wales names a new goat as its mascot they get several column inches dedicated to them in the Welsh press. I've never eaten here - nor would I want to as it strikes me a strictly drinking pub with lots of real ales on the menu and wall to wall dark wood panelling. Wednesday is Welsh night by the way and apparently the pub offers a range of Goat Major memorabilia - I can't say I'd noticed.

I think this place fits in with all the other bars round Old Market that have all been taken care of really well. There are two faces to the Old Market. Then at night, comes the second face of Old Market.... Picture the scene, a couple of my mates have come to visit me in Bristol, we've decided to have a bit of a lads night out and a pub crawl round Bristol we've had a few brews in our system and we stumble up to the old Market, we wander in and have alook around as we order, one of my mates looks around and says "there's alot of blokes in here aint there?" then as we drink out pint we realise, there is a pumping gay scene at night times in here!

Whoever invented these knew the perfect combination of flavors though, they were fantastic!! I also ordered the Rodeo burger (before I knew how big the fries were) and that was the best burger I've ever had, just amazing. We sat outside on a long picnic table because all the tables were full inside. There were already people sitting there and it was so nice to speak to people in the community and get to know them. And it's back with BIG food. Although pulled pork is 'in' at the moment, the Hobgoblin do it very well. Huge rolls filled with Mexican marinated pork with slaw and pickles on the side. As well as the big pulled pork rolls they do mountain sized burgers that look deliciously threatening; cheese rolling down the sides and buns shining from the grease. But the best thing on the menu is the 'Dirty, dirty fries' which were 'born out of a hangover'. The Dirty, dirty fries are a huge mix of fries, pulled pork, melted cheese and spicy sauces. They really are amazing! The Hobgoblin has a food challenge called 'The Kraken'. I can't remember everything that's on it but it involves lots of meat, dirty fries and chicken wings. I don't think anyone has completed it within the hour yet. Their pulled pork is smoked on site, burgers homemade and meat locally sourced from a Gloucester Road butcher. Probably bought with Bristol pounds and wrapped in an evening post, too! The decor is casual and the bar serves your normal lagers, beers, ciders, cocktails and shots. While the emphasis is on the food at the Hobgoblin, you'll still find a few groups just there for drinks. This isn't a first date place but it is a great place to meet mates and tuck into great, dirty food.

The Old Duke is a jazz pub, and they have so many nights on every week with different live acts. You get the feel of this immediately when you walk in, with all the posters and newspaper cuttings stuck to the walls. Unfortunately I've never managed to catch a live act here - I've seen them set up enough times though, but seem to have always had to rush off before the band starts! Named after Duke Ellington, the pub lives and breathes jazz music which is on offer every evening during the week and on Sunday lunchtimes. Take a trip here for the atmosphere; sit and gaze up at the ceiling papered with old concert posters, grab a drink from the extremely friendly bar staff, and hear some of the best toe-tapping blues and jazz around - free of charge. Crowds tend to spill out onto the cobbles of King Street during the interval, especially in the summer months. It's an absolute must-visit for any fan of jazz and old traditional pubs. You'll soon forget the fact that you're jammed shoulder-to-shoulder with a hundred other people all trying to get to the bar; the live music and atmosphere more than make up for that.

It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day.
